    Thats a great idea! I had to put a plastic Owl by my garden to keep the birds out and it worked great on Rabbits also. Did not do so well for the horse...Look forward to your next vid. Brian

    Little sods! When I saw the title I have to admit that I feared the same as Chris and Brendan so very glad it wasn't as disastrous as It could have been but also happy that you have hopefully sorted the problem. All the best.

      If I'd not noticed the slits and holes then I might have well had a load of hooligans wrecking it, but thankfully I repaired it as best I could and it should be OK.
      Cheers, Dan.

    I hope your fix keeps the birds away!

      I would consider a artificial roof for them to actually land on.
      Instead of scaring them away--waste their time.
      Place a plastic sheeting landing pad--all the way--the length of the shelter. A flat spot at the top--of vinyl...where they can peck without doing damage.
      8, 9 10-inches wide---the length of the shelter.../
      They don't seem to be using the heavy angled side.
      Buffer the pecking.

    Nature really seems to have it in for us gardeners these days :o(
    Glad you got it sorted. Hope is hasn't shortened the life of the cover.

      Hopefully the yards of sticky repair tape has fixed it.
      It's 15 years old now and still going strong.
      Cheers, Dan.

      I could not tell in the video, but if that is reflective tape you put up, it really works. I put it around my garden and have not seen one bird inside the fence. Hope it works for you.

    hahaha... I love the yodelling when you fell off the step.... All my peas have been savaged by bloody woodpigeons.... If I still had an air rifle it would have been pigeon pie for lunch! The beggars.. pushed through the mesh and just sat staring at me when I went down ..... We have hard pigeons here in Liverpool.... best of luck Dan :D

    My heart fell when I read the title because I thought some arsehole with a Stanley knife had been on the plot which momentarily confused me because those type of person don't usually be bothered to go out of their way to do damage. That Tibetan prayer flag should work.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 лет назад +3

      It's OK, the arsehole with a Stanley Knife comes up regularly, he's called Emottyville, I've managed to tame him.
      It's the fekkin birds, which I love that are the problem.
      This holographic prayer flag thingy seems to have done the trick so far.
      Cheers, Dan.

    When I saw the word vandalism in the title I feared as Brendan did that some sh1t had been up and wrecked the tunnel. In a way I'm so glad it was only birds being a pain. Great fix by the way. What about some sticky fly tape thingys in the tunnel to catch the bugs and fly's.
    All the best fella. Chris

    WOW, haha glad it was just bird. I literally thought going into this that you had your polytunnel vandalized by young kids. Glad it wasn't that. Take care Dan!
    ps: I am trying some giant massive onions from a professional grower. I am hoping you can stop by when I show them and tell me if I am doing things right. They look decent so far, but lord knows if I am doing things right.

    Used to be able to get metal or plastic silhouettes of hawks for that, like on a weather vanes. or realistic models even. Would be quieter anyway

      Seems to have worked so far.
      Luckily I don't have any cats, the dirty bird killing , shit in your soil, horrible beasts up here.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Its Cats I have trouble with, seem to like the containers that my potatoes are growing in and keep messing in them! After trying many things I have now rigged up some wood and netting and that seems to have worked. Hope you don't have any other problems with your pesty birds

      The scarer seems to have kept 'em away since.

    A mate had the same problem where he worked. They had some huge bird of pray landing on top and ripping it up.
    There solution was to use a old basketball hoop next door as a perch :)

      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 лет назад

      These are just Oystercatchers perching and seeing food below.
      The flappy scarer seems to have worked since.

    Hon, you need to string ribbons of Conspicuity Tape all round! It's metallic and flashes in the sun and resembles fire to aerial vermin so they won't go towards it. We use it for fig trees here.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 лет назад

      That's what these were, holographic metallic ribbons .
      Seem to have done the trick so far.

    Looks like a good idea with the scarer.
    Never seen birds doing like that. Is it the magpies? They often bully men with small hammers.. ;)

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 лет назад

      These are Oystercatchers, they nest in our field but this seems to have stopped them sitting on my polytunnel.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Oh mate I'd be devastated as I'm sure you were! I wouldn't have even given birds a thought of doing that.
    Just as a matter of interest I'm looking at copying your idea for the tile trim gutter on your Polytunnel, have you had any problems with it staying stuck Dan?
    Cheers, John

    Some fake rubber snakes from the local dollar store attached to the roof would keep them far away.

  • @andy160676

    Feel sorry for you mate, it is just impossible sometimes to have an easy ride if its not bugs its birds and if its not them its weather and disease/virus.
    thought it was all supposed to be fun this gardening malarkey.
    hope it works,that ribbon stuff is the same as i use and it seems ok but if you can put up with the noise get some old blind strips coz they proper clank about.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 лет назад

      It's worked so far.
      The stuff I used is supposed to be holographic bird scarer tape and it makes a real racket in the wind.
      Just glad I spotted it otherwise it'd have ripped to buggery in this wind.
      Think I may have come up with an ingenious leatherjacket brassica and lettuce stopper, I'm going to surround each plant with a 3" tall piece of 4" dia pipe.
      Not done it yet but I'll show it on my vid when I plant 'em out.
      Should work as the little sods don't have any legs.
      Cheers, Dan.

      Good idea mate might do that next year,being a plumber i can get all sorts of stuff cheap,
      when i filled my carrot box up the a couple of weeks ago i used a gutter outlet i had left over and it worked a treat for filling the holes up.that tapes good stuff i have it flapping about on 8ft kains.went down the plot yesterday and there has been no more damage so the straw things working great and stuff is getting bigger already.spent hours today making supports for my onions and what an arse of a job that is.
      cheers Andy

    Get some cheap rubber snakes and put them on top of your polytunnel. over here we have stores where everything is $1 or less. I assume you have an equivalent.

    I thought you meant vandals not as birds vandalism, criminal shame as if its not hard enough.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 лет назад

      I would be happy to beat the brains out of a human vandal if I caught them but I still like birds so this is the only solution.
