@@YorkshireRailways I've always been a bit dismayed that hornby have never done a railroad mk3, even though they've done the blue/yellow and virgin train packs in that range (and this set is often referred to as a railroad one)
@@mangleytown I definitely think there is a market for it and I can’t see how it was overlooked that making a train set with a different coach to the range currently out wasn’t going to be an issue to some, they clearly have the coaches available seen as they are just a repainted version of the mk3 they have been putting in class 43 packs and sets for years. Totally bonkers, but in saying all this I still like and enjoy the set and maybe one day will own one of the more high spec tooled versions
@@YorkshireRailways Let's hope so! Seems strange that they wouldn't seeing as though they dual released their Mk2es in both the Railways and Railroad range...and also have new Mk3s making the older ones redundant so we can only hope
@@YorkshireRailways I used to regularly catch the 125s (as they were always called then) from Paddington to Reading in my uni days from '91 to '95. It was always so welcoming to be greeted by the deep thrum of four or so Valenta 125s sitting at idle at Paddington; they would make the whole air enclosure resonate. I went there again a few years ago; deathly silence. All rather disappointing.
@@lewis72 it definitely is, I remember sitting at Sheffield station with my grandad with a cup of tea and a flap jack watching the trains back in 99 and hearing them was something to believe. Loved seeing all the different livery’s. Great to hear your story 😊
@@YorkshireRailways My first experience of an HST was getting the ECML service from Peterborough to Donny as part of the route from Norfolk to Hull, where my grandparents lived. That was quite an interesting trip too !
Thank you, yes it is better with the longer mk3 I have a set that just doesn’t look right with the shorter carriage model for my midland mainline early livery
Ok so I unboxed Christmas night. Same issue with powercar wheels. Testing it tomorrow am so a little nervous as I hope the wires are all OK. I love the satin green finish.
Hello Peter, hope you’ve had a great Christmas. Sorry to hear you’ve experienced something similar to how my model was unboxed, something definitely needs checking with Hornbys quality control. Hope your test run has gone okay and there is no actual fault with the model. But agree the satin green is very nice, wish the camera could pick it up better I’d does appear a lot darker on the camera.
@@petermcgarrymusicandflying Good to hear! And nothing wrong with being a beginner I am too, I had and still have a layout from when I was a kid but I got back into the hobby during lockdown and have been collecting models since to build a layout when I have more space to do so.
@@YorkshireRailways I am fortunate in that I had just started putting a collection together then I inherited a large 30 year old collection with a huge amount of locos and rolling stock. Right now I have 18 engines. The other positive is that I have plenty of space to establish a layout. Hoping to visit Yorks Rail Museum in May when I am usually over for air shows which is my other interest. Anyway nice to make connections in this hobby !
Very sad to see plastic wrapped around the items in the box. Hornby need to go back to using environmentally friendly tissue paper. My God it's falling apart multiple times from being unboxed. No wonder why Hornby share price is going to $0. Just exposes the absolute lack of quality control.
I would agree seems a little pointless having the environmentally friendly egg box packaging to put plastic film around the models however other sets I’ve had with this style packaging do have tissue paper so it must be something to do with the HST’s. And although this does show there are some issues with quality control I have two of these sets and the other was perfectly fine no issues.
Unimpressed with their quality control, I'd never buy from Hornby again. Not worth the price. If I still had a model railway it would be pre-owned vintage pre China models; Gaugemaster controllers are far better and the analogue controllers are made in the UK:-)
Hello Daniel, no I wasn’t impressed with the quality control that has happened with this set and appears through the comments others have had this issue as well. However i have two of these train sets and before the channel existed the first was excellent with no faults. All company’s have their faults and the vast amount of locomotives I own are by Hornby and have had no issues, so as is with everything it all depends on the individual model and sometime outliers make it out the factory. It’s annoying and sometimes can’t be helped. I am however hoping to move to a gaugmaster controller once I move out and have a place to build a more permanent railway layout. 😊👍
Just got this as my first train set for my 50th. Thanks for your review
Happy birthday Stefan I hope you enjoy your train set! And thank you for watching the video 😊
One of my favourite HST liveries, mainly for just how shiny they are 😀
Haha they are great and very shiny! Shame Hornby don’t sell the mk3 coaches from this set separately but do for the more detailed railway version

I just put baby oil on my locos with cotton wool

IIRC, the HST set that ran from Paddington had:
- Two 1st Class carriages
- One Restaurant car
- Five Std Class carriages.
Brilliant thank you for the information. Will have to one day get a full rake. But recons I should get the more detailed version first

I agree with your ratings, but it's a good thing that the Mk3s are the correct long length.
