Jay, this interview was valuable. You are an amazing interviewer and this Ivy an incredible conversationalist and activist. I am blown away by both of you. My wife is a Black woman so I have a head start at managing her traumas but this will help that much more when that time comes from her. I had no idea a woman goes through all of that, the graphic details of it. Thanks for what you do. It's amazing.
@IvyProsper , in my eyes, this was more than art, so it doesn't surprise me at all to read that it scared you. It always requires tons of courage to step beyond cultural norms and that in fact, is what you and Jay managed to do, in this interview. Broadly speaking, our culture in GH doesn't reward information sharing and more specifically, such openness in the public square as you felt able to be in Jay's presence; if a little awkwardly. The tendency among us to hoard information partly explains our technological deficiencies. We've been failing to incrementally build on each other's observations and experiences throughout our generations! I imagine it did require 4yrs of hard work by both of you to come to this space of feeling accepted by each other. I suspect it helped that Jay came to this conversation from a more open culture, where information isn't hoarded, but leveraged and also that you Ivy, came to it from the immersive experience of both Canadian and American cultures, starting as you say, from an early age. Your explanation of what might have triggered menopause in your body makes scientific sense to me, Ivy. The C virus and more especially the vaccines offered in response to it were so different from anything else we'd experienced en masse that our bodies appear to have gone through traumatic shock, because of them. On that basis, it doesn't sound so far fetched to suspect a causal link between a major change in your hormonal balance and introduction of the C-vaccine in your body. Kudos to you both, Ivy and Jay. This interview was history in the making. It showcases one of the benefits of building trust between the tradition-laden Ghanaian and the frontier-breaching African American cultures and I say that without judging either culture. Both have their strengths, as do all cultures. Love you both.

Yes, menopause is challenging, but all the physical symptoms are manageable even the vaginal dryness low libido and menopausal weight gain . We still have so much life to live and make a meaningful contribution to ourselves, our causes and our community.
I totally relate to the title because this is me. Age 50, no kids, not married and definitely menopausal! I have found my tribe! My moma told me about the “private summers” but this hormonal imbalance and mood swings are very REAL! 😂
My perspective is totally different. I couldn’t wait to go through menopause. I bled so very heavy from the age 13 every single month(except during my birth control pills era) that a few night sweats was a breeze. I know females who used medication. But, I celebrated it and started to wear white clothing. Now, vaginal dryness is real and a low sex drive is real. But, no pain, no embarrassments, no event cancellations was a welcome to me. As far as children, I was never pregnant and sometimes I regret it. But not really. I have a full life and have done things and gone places (like traveling with Jay) that I would’ve never experienced if I were still paying student loans and now educating grandchildren. Sounds selfish but it is what it is.
Ivy’s so gorgeous 🤩, regardless of age,50 I think is too early to call yourself old maybe 65…Iook at Jay & Ivy are good looking ppl, I hope to look like that once I get there
Been following Ivy for years as one of my sista Ghanaians from north America who moved back home over 10 years ago! So, just wish a more flattering, nonsensational caption that also included Ghana. She looks amazing for her age and also curious how much she's traveled thru continent especially more in West Africa like Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, then southern Africa & east etc even Caribbean. More to explore & more potential suitors too! But ya menopause can be taboo and feel woman to woman convo on this more ideal & relatable. Also another factor impacting when it starts or delaying it having the change sooner, is age of first period. Also the number of pregnancies/ children & the 9-10 months of hormones. So one's mom & grandma would experience it later in 50s based on childbearing. Was shocked the 'covid'vaccine mentioned. I'm a Physician and it did impact some women's periods and some who had irregular cycles and were active ended up pregnant few months after shot!
I understand whoally to how Ivy feels. I am 54 and I started feeling it around 52 mostly while sleeping. I literally woke up in a panic trying to get to the bathroom to put my skin on the cold granite 😂. Brain fog and all. My hubby is very understanding of this stage.

This is not to target Jay, but it is interesting when people in general ask the person who is not picked, why they are not in a relationship. "You are intelligent, attractive, etc, why are you not in a relationship?" The reality is they would probably have chosen someone like themselves if they were of the opposite sex. In their minds, they are perfectly fine. The best people to ask are those who did not want this person. They are the only ones who can really tell that reason.
what you're saying is not really logical. There are billions of people on the earth. Millions of people around an individual living in a metro area. Someone who is well accomplished and travelled has probably met hundreds to thousands of possible suitors. Women are CONSTANTLY bombarded by advances from men. This is part of the game of life. Men go out and pursue partners, and women evaluate and accept the best possible partner to settle down and build a family with (generalizations). Great topic! But I would say that not all women 45 plus whose menses has stopped go through symptoms associated with pre-menopause and menopause. In my case, the only thing I experienced was cessation of my menses. Other than that, life just continues as usual.
You're lucky. Because 85% of women experience the symptoms. You're probably one of those small percentage of women who also had no cramps during your menstrual cycle. I was always envious of those women because my cramps were debilitating.

Not only do men look at younger women because of their fertility as stated by Ivy, the fact of the matter is that most older men are attracted to younger women, because of their youthful looks and "freshnes". At some point, older men are no longer attracted to older women.
Quite possible there is an association between the onset of menopausal symptoms & the C vaccine, since knowledge about orthodox medicine is never absolute. However, it is not uncommon for anyone to have one or a few symptoms of a brief flu-like illness eg a fever or bouts of that, profuse sweating, joint/bodily pain, headache, malaise, etc after most vaccine shots. So, best to keep an open mind about a causal relationship or some association …
She failed to take account of the fact that she's lived most of her life in a highly industrialised country with polluted air, food and water. Isn't that a more rational explanation for starting menopause earlier than her Ghanaian relatives? When all things are equal, the simplest explanation tends to be the right one.
