After 6 years later... it's still one of the best opening scenes in the 2010s and modern cinema. The thrills, the speed, and the synchronization of the music and the car is everything. It's a nonstop musical that doesn't feel like six minutes of Baby just cruising as if he doesn't need training wheels.
So true lmaoo, little 10 year old car guy me got hooked on the movie because of the STI lol. Without it I wouldn’t be so interested. They definitely chose a great car for the opening scene
2:33 is a great clip. The point, the reverse, and the insane corner tracking shot as he comes around the barricade right into the camera. The camerawork is first rate.
IMO this is possibly the single greatest opening scene and/or music scene in film. there is so much characterization packed into every part of it and the use of the song combined with the structure and editing is incredible.
I love how the entire time the bank robbers are not freaking out, they're not trying to tell him how to do his job, they just shut up and let him do it.
Nope, you can see them multiple times freaking out, and yelling something towards him. I think the woman and man in front does it the most. But you cant hear anything because of the music. And thats the entire point of the headphones.
1:52 I know this may sound weird, but I think this is foreshadowing that baby does not like violence and is looking to see if anyone is needlessly killed. In this case, he sees that they are shooting into the air only, and not using deadly force on the victims for no reason. Later in the film, the one dude used too much unnecessary force on the security guards and pissed baby off
Yeah I think it was intentional, I also like how in the scene where he plays with the toy car and it falls off the table pretty much foreshadows the climax of the fight at the car park towards the end of the movie.
The fact that you’re captivated from the very beginning and hooked til the very end with 0 dialogue is quite a feat to accomplish well done to the stunt coordinator and choreographers for this film.
We don't know anything about the plot or the characters already, and you still hook up, the only time i remember something like this is in Saving Private Ryan, it's like 20 minutes of pure booms and shooting, this movie did it in 6 minutes, so this clip only is a masterpiece.

well this was the best scene of the whole movie...
Shifts from first to third without the engine dropping revs, comes to a near dead stop in third without stalling, with the engine strain steadily increasing, then somehow shifts to fourth and has all the power in the world to rocket off out of the drift.
I adore this movie with absolutely every fiber of my BEING. God, it makes every muscle in my face hurt every time I watch it. And this opening scene is the perfect example. First, the Sony pictures logo at the start. In every sony movie, the logo shows up, and it sparkles to the sound of a piano note. In THIS movie, the same happens, but the note doesn't stop. It keeps playing. Why? Well, number one, it represents Baby's tinnitus. The ringing in his ears, perfectly represented by a LOGO. That's something you only notice on repeat watchings. Not to mention it feels like the opening of an orchestra. All the sounds and instruments preparing, revving up, it shows that you're in for a good time. The song choice is PHENOMENAL, since #1 we get four perfect shots introducing everyone. And I get goosebumps every time I watch them leave the car, and open/close the trunk in sync. It's flawless. I love how we see ZERO action from inside the bank. This is Baby's movie. We see him jam out in the car. We see him watch uncomfortably as the robbery is carried out. And as another small detail I like, the first shots are fired right in time with the lines "the police are coming!" In the song. The driving choreography is FANTASTIC. You know you're in for a great scene when IMMEDIATELY, Griff points forward only for Baby to drive in reverse. As he spins the corner and pushes the police spikes 90°, or when he swaps lanes with the other identical cars under the bridge, it's all so engaging, so fun to watch, only gets BETTER on repeated viewings, and tells us everything we need to know before we hear a single line of spoken dialogue. This scene is fantastic. It's not my favorite, the hocus pocus chase scene is #2 and Buddy confronting Baby in the diner is and will always be my favorite, but the opening scene is perfect. Absolutely perfect. It's not my favorite, but to me, the most important part of any movie is the opening scene. And this movie is a perfect example on how to get every aspect of that right. in reality if you tried to do this in Atlanta you'd either end up sitting in traffic for 2 hours or your tire would pop because of all the god damn pot holes in this city
@@KirbyLinkACW ah ok 😂 i mean ofcourse, the in-universe explanation could be the time they chose to rob it it could be working hours hence less traffic 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ and financial districts and highways typically are well maintained
maybe you guys should vote to have a train system there then. oh right the people of Atlanta keep denying the bill to built one because local news outlets keep lying to you about your taxes going up.
The use of everyday cars instead of supercars, the stunts, the camera work, the use of music...it threw me back to the Luc Bésson Taxi series, especially the first two. Even the fact that I thought that the cast was insanely overkill for just a car action film, but it's not really a car movie. Again, Luc Bésson. I was not expecting to see another great oddity like Taxi ever again, but this movie certainly delivered and I'm very glad for it.
I know that I can practice social distancing with one million pounds in my backpack and with a shotgun in my hands. If police catches me I'll tell them that with the shotgun I verify if they are at a socially acceptable distance. If they are to close they'll be shot by me because they came in my safe zone...... but also the firing range of my gun.
The columns passing the camera on beat is my favourite part of this whole scene and you're the first person I've seen who's noticed it. It's a brilliant touch
at some point in my early 20s, I came across a magazine that listed the top 50 or 100 uses of songs in movies. as someone who loved both, this became probably my biggest obsession - imagining a film scene that was elevated from the use of a specific song. about 10 years later, during the middle of which I did my masters in filmmaking but had come nowhere near working on a film, i went to the cinema to watch this film with some colleagues. while i got in my seat first, i was waiting for them to come in as they were straggling behind with their popcorn and drinks. i was distracted when the scene began, but about a minute in, i became aware of just how precisely the edit was going with the song, and i suddenly forgot about the people i was with and became truly transfixed. the scene, and its perfect, miraculous synchronisation with the song, kept becoming more and more exhilarating. when it ended, i found myself wanting to jump in my chair with excitement. it was a great reminder that cinema can be such an intensely immersive experience. one of my favourite memories of all time.
@TrueKen It's a cool scene, and definitely an inspiration for this one. But I wouldn't go as far as saying that it makes this scene lose its originality, it's not that similar.
I remember being 14 and seeing this at the movies for the first time and walking out of that theater thinking this is the best thing I’ve seen in a while.
This movie feels like the perfect example of when movies use licensed music. Sure, other times it's obnoxious (mostly cuz it's just songs that are popular at the time), but the way they use music in this movie is SO WELL DONE. So many different things accommodating the music: The timing, what's happening in the scene fitting the lyrics, the STORY itself-it's so fucking COOL!
You might appreciate the OST from the game Cyberpunk 2077. They hired dozens of musicians to make songs for the game world that play on in-game radio stations. They had a punk band, Refused, create an album for the game as a fictional band, Samurai, which is comprised of in game characters. Each main character in the game, and as well certain story arcs for the main character all have their own "theme song" which variations and remixes of play throughout as their stories advance. People shit on this game a lot, but it did something incredible with its OST that has never been done before.
@@pizzasaurolophus also a very nice little detailed thing they added in CP is that wheneve someone plays guitar, their fingers match the music perfectly. They motion captured musicians playing the songs.
You're spot on! This is part and parcel for Edgar Wright's films. See also: Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim, The World's End, and of course Shaun of the Dead. They're incredibly rewarding to watch if you pay attention to the music!
Everything in this movies syncs with the music. The doors opening/closing, putting the coffees on the table, Baby dancing. I literally mean everything.
See here, he didn't brake first then clutch but at the same time, and this is the best openning chass for quite some times now. We should't be seeing this debate for another while
I just love how the music in the movie is more than something heard in the background but a motif in the story to represent how music affects Baby's life. When the cinematography is in sync with the soundtrack, things are going well for him. When it's not, he's in some kind of trouble and struggles to get it back in sync in some way.
You're actually right, which when you think about it, is so astronomically weird. If we just count theatre showings, this video has 71M views, but the movie only made $226M in box office. Even if we assume the hilariously low average ticket price at $3.25 this RUclips video was still viewed more times.
DarylPlayz just cuz he cant direct a film doesnt mean he shouldnt judge one. its like saying you shouldnt complain about rotten food served in a restaurant if you cant cook.
yeah, the scenes where coordinated perfectly with the music. as someone who has worked as an editor, "sloppy" is not the word you can use to define this
Not him but I can understand where he's coming from. I have no problems about how this scene is directed, it's just that some shots really are missing like the car is teleporting from place to place. They probably cut them to fit the music's duration.
This whole clip is basically how it feels to be the getaway driver in GTA Online

in reality if you tried to do this in Atlanta you'd either end up sitting in traffic for 2 hours or your tire would pop because of all the god damn pot holes in this city
movie was shot in atlanta
@@Bolter024 They meant if the scene wasn't romanticized.
@@KirbyLinkACW ah ok 😂
i mean ofcourse, the in-universe explanation could be the time they chose to rob it
it could be working hours hence less traffic 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
and financial districts and highways typically are well maintained
lmao!! Yeah you'd get a more intense chase with pedal bicycles
maybe you guys should vote to have a train system there then. oh right the people of Atlanta keep denying the bill to built one because local news outlets keep lying to you about your taxes going up.
Love that screaming J-turn. 😍
The robbers put on their masks when they enter a populated building because they’re responsible citizens.

So weird how it looked normal for them to do that 😂

05:12 even the columns are in sync with the music. Edgar Wright is the master of integrating music and film
AND the open door dong at the end is also in sync.
Oh my God you're right
The columns passing the camera on beat is my favourite part of this whole scene and you're the first person I've seen who's noticed it. It's a brilliant touch
Bruh this movie is underrated af.
edgar wright is a god, the stuff he has done with baby driver and the conetta trilogy is perfect
I always loved a good ol'Subaru impreza, but damm this movie is one hell of an add for this car
at some point in my early 20s, I came across a magazine that listed the top 50 or 100 uses of songs in movies. as someone who loved both, this became probably my biggest obsession - imagining a film scene that was elevated from the use of a specific song. about 10 years later, during the middle of which I did my masters in filmmaking but had come nowhere near working on a film, i went to the cinema to watch this film with some colleagues. while i got in my seat first, i was waiting for them to come in as they were straggling behind with their popcorn and drinks. i was distracted when the scene began, but about a minute in, i became aware of just how precisely the edit was going with the song, and i suddenly forgot about the people i was with and became truly transfixed. the scene, and its perfect, miraculous synchronisation with the song, kept becoming more and more exhilarating. when it ended, i found myself wanting to jump in my chair with excitement. it was a great reminder that cinema can be such an intensely immersive experience. one of my favourite memories of all time.
This film should be considered a modern day classic. So original
For sure
@TrueKen It's a cool scene, and definitely an inspiration for this one. But I wouldn't go as far as saying that it makes this scene lose its originality, it's not that similar.
@TrueKen wadiyatalkinabeet?
The movie just goes downhill after the opening scene.

This movie feels like the perfect example of when movies use licensed music.
Sure, other times it's obnoxious (mostly cuz it's just songs that are popular at the time), but the way they use music in this movie is SO WELL DONE. So many different things accommodating the music: The timing, what's happening in the scene fitting the lyrics, the STORY itself-it's so fucking COOL!
yes you are correct
They motion captured musicians playing the songs.
i would put GOTG up there too
You're spot on! This is part and parcel for Edgar Wright's films. See also: Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim, The World's End, and of course Shaun of the Dead. They're incredibly rewarding to watch if you pay attention to the music!

Gun shots synced to the music too

See here, he didn't brake first then clutch but at the same time, and this is the best openning chass for quite some times now. We should't be seeing this debate for another while
I just love how the music in the movie is more than something heard in the background but a motif in the story to represent how music affects Baby's life. When the cinematography is in sync with the soundtrack, things are going well for him. When it's not, he's in some kind of trouble and struggles to get it back in sync in some way.
Good point. If he was listening to Eurobeat tho, he would be unable to drive in a straight line and/or would drift non-stop.
The music is in sync with gunshots in the foot chase scene though. Shouldn't that be a scene where the music isn't in sync
SH HS
The movie is a pseudomusical
SH HS He got away, though
It's not because it's going well when the music is in sync, it just means he knows what to do.

You're actually right, which when you think about it, is so astronomically weird. If we just count theatre showings, this video has 71M views, but the movie only made $226M in box office. Even if we assume the hilariously low average ticket price at $3.25 this RUclips video was still viewed more times.

*this is how you use cameras
DarylPlayz just cuz he cant direct a film doesnt mean he shouldnt judge one. its like saying you shouldnt complain about rotten food served in a restaurant if you cant cook.
yeah, the scenes where coordinated perfectly with the music. as someone who has worked as an editor, "sloppy" is not the word you can use to define this
Not him but I can understand where he's coming from. I have no problems about how this scene is directed, it's just that some shots really are missing like the car is teleporting from place to place. They probably cut them to fit the music's duration.
It's all CGI these days, you just don't know it.
This is better directed than all the car scenes in the entire Fast and furious saga, not kidding
