Yup! I haven't played the games, so speaking as an outsider, I think it would've been a lot better for this movie and its cinematic future if they simply let the first movie focus on the blood-feud between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, so they'd have a lot more screentime to let us get invested in these characters, before deciding to expand the world and add more characters in a sequel. Like let Scorpion at the end of the first movie figure out that it's not just him, who's been dealing with someone like Sub-Zero, then let him explore and figure out how widespread this problem is and why it's happening and seek to put an end to it by gathering others who have been in similar positions as him.
Can we get a director's cut that involves at least 30 more minutes of Scorpion/Sub-Zero scenes??? I'm willing to sacrifice all of Cole's scenes, if that's what it takes.

This is what the movie needed to be better. More of scorpion and his connection to Cole. He keeps getting visions of Scorpion in hell, learns who he is, then suddenly he shows up to fight SubZero at the end. No build up at all for him being there. If they really tried to connect Cole to him, they should have spent a few more minutes on that, and then explain why he shows up at the end because the film gives us nothing. That would have made both characters better IMO. Plus I would like for Liu Kang to have had more spotlight and importance, rather then just making him their generic teacher for a bit.
Sub and Scorp were 100% used to lure everyone in. I would’ve enjoyed a movie with just them. Cole Young is literally the most stale ass character in any film lmao it hurt that they brought a new dude in.
Good for a Rooster Teeth video, not a hundred million dollar film. It felt like an advertisement that didn’t even know what it was itself. After someone gets a fatality done on them: Me: Don’t say Fatality, don’t say it, don’t you say -“ Kung Lao: “Flawless victory!” Me: “Fuck you! That’s not even the right term! You nearly got beat you tool!”
I honestly thought Cole was Lu kang, til Lu showed up. Then I thought he was gonna be the next scorpion, til Scorpion showed up. I'm just like who tf is this guy?!
I am guessing the woke culture really wanted to replace Johnny, too bad they are all bad writers, os they cant write a good character to save their lives
That would’ve been a lot better if Cole turned out to be Liu Kang. It goes against the lore, but would be an interesting twist that would explain a few things, like Liu Kang’s control of fire. As is, both Cole and Liu Kang are pretty weak in the film.
YEA they could've did without Cole Young, Liu Kang is Earths champion the story should've revolved around him then they killed Kung Lao like wtf. Best part of the movie was Kano .
Worst decision they made was not using the rivalry between him and Scorpion throughout the movie. Book-ending the movie with it just makes you a little disappointed with the middle
@@JBouch33 exactly and why if Cole is related to Scorpion and Cole was raised an orphan didn't they lean in on the legacy? Have a family reunion moment ?!? Anything ?
With the right direction, production etc you could make a legitimate 10/10 movie with Sanada and Taslim just focusing on the Sub Zero/Scorpion rivalry.
If a sequel ever happens, I hope they will get someone like Gareth Evans or Chad Stahelski, who would be more experienced with these kind of action movies
Would've been so much better if they started off with that as the first movie, then a lot more screentime could've been given to those two, to make the audience interested in those characters, before deciding to expand the world and the amount of characters. Forget that it's a video-game adaptation and focus on making a martial arts epic, focusing on the blood-feud between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
I had no idea who he was. I don't get why can't they make a good MK movie? Remember "Enter the Dragon" or "Big Trouble In Little China", - here we are almost 5 decades later with far more advanced effects and those 2 films feel far more like MK than this. I wish I could go pluck those writers/directors from the past, give them the budget/tech of today.
@@mattstorm6568 The studio wanted the movie to be different from the game so one aspect was they wanted a lead who wasn't part of the Mortal Kombat lore. That's how Cole came about.
is it just me, or the part that making sub zero the bad guy really wasn't like a good idea to do? ALSO agreed! love Hiroyuki Sanada and Joe Taslim's performance!
i like how they made a Mortal Kombat movie without an actual Mortal Kombat tournament they're like "nah we'll save that for a sequel...if we get to make one"
that was the biggest drawback. An hour into the movie I was thinking where is the Mortal Kombat tournament. Where is the fight ? Where is the set up. The first 20-25 minutes are good. To the point where sub zero arrives the movie is interesting. But thereafter it descends into mediocrity. The screenplay is really poor and so is the acting. it appears the script was rewritten as makers tried to put the framework of the story. But overall its loses its intensity and steam to become very bland. The dialogues are poor and the plot points are really weak. I mean the black guy just saw what sub zero could do and he is telling him I have six tours. And why did he not tell the lead actor the purpose of his visit the moment he saw the the mark. And the bearded guy who is chained and wants to escape suddenly has a change of heart and decides to stay for 3 million dollars. He is wanted in 35 countries. How stupid could he be. They find a plane to reach the Temple of doom where the Shao Ying clan is waiting for them. Its a mess. You get a sense that the makers had some ideas. But they could never integrate them properly leaving too many holes. And casting is awful. Apart from the lady Sonya Blade and Sub Zero not one actor looked like a fit for an action movie of this type. Disappointing. Even more so because the first 20 minutes are really well done. As Stuckkman said it exceed expectations and I too thought that is really good, in fact too good for a Mortal Kombat type movie. But it falls apart thereafter.
This movie was meant to be the start of a planned trilogy. The developers plan was movie 1 pre tournament, the next movie will be the tournament and the final movie is the tournament aftermath.
@@kellyburgess9510 well there is some good stuff in the movie. The action scenes and the idea of the back story. But the screenplay is what lets it down. And also the acting. I think the movie probably bit a little more than it could chew with the back story, then character development and the set up. there are many plot holes and narrative takes far more liberties than it could afford. The arcana stuff is pretty uninspiring. They could have followed the model of the original's director in Monster Hunt which followed a simpler path in and delivered a more entertaining movie. Just too many things happen in the third act which are hard to believe. They need to make the story more intense, make the villains' more threatening, and finally make the narrative more cohesive. I mean some of the stuff is funny. Like Cole's daughter saying cool suit dad when her father is being attacked by a four arm monster. And then when she says try the upper cut its like he is fighting an exhibition match and not facing some life threatening monster. And the guys who loses his arms saying I have six tours. And finally the good guy in the beginning returns suddenly at the end as Scorpion. The reviewers have praised Kane. Frankly he sounds like a buffoon in the entire movie and his actions are really hard to understand even though the character was well thought off and the fight sequence with the reptile was good. And the lightening god cannot interfere. More intensity , better acting, more cohesion is required. But Nicholas Cage is coming for the sequel. Lets hope he makes a good comeback.
Cole was the best written character. Playing the guy who needs to do something for his family or something. Forget otherworldly shadow ninjas, sub zeros story should just be that he needs to fight for his family. Cue subbies little one starting to cry, his tired wife getting up but he stops her. “I got it this time.” Holding his child sub zero realizes he must fight! For his family or something.
Coles's character has potential but in my opinion, he was written wrong, he barely had that much dialogue and when he did say something it was generic sounding.
@@Jetlife33 Cole felt like a satisfactory way of introducing the characters of MK from a neutral point of view within the verse. I didn’t mind Cole’s inclusion as most of his dialogue were primarily used for setting up the world of MK and less about who he is as a character. He’s honestly the perfect character to kill off during the sequel because he’s that basic. Personally I’d love it if Cole was killed off within the first half of the sequel to have Johnny Cage be the secret MC of the sequel.
Heavely cut and edited fight scenes are the bane of americanised version of a cinematic fight. South-asian action cinema knows what is good. It's a choregraphy, not just a serie of close-up punches and kicks. It's a shame
I know and the actors in interviews where so excited about it being REAL fighting and how "you haven't seen it done like this before" only to have it ruined in post
When I first saw cole and that little girl I honestly thought that was his sister, only to reveal that’s his daughter???? And his “wife” looks like she could be his mom and it felt so awkward seeing them kiss
If the movie was just based on the origins of scorpion and Sub-Zero this movie would have been amazing to set the mortal Kombat universe and future installments.
1st 10 mins with Sub and Scorpion, Sub and Jax, and or kano scenes a great watch, everything else meh...Liu Kang is not front and center...armor plot, abilities plot...wack...Mk Annihilation, but with complicated plot twists...the mk dragons are now mk birthmarks (mk annihilation '97)
same, i wish they went that route, like when his body suit started to form i was like "omg scorpions taking over, like some sort of avatar state" i thought his eyes were gonna get all firey and maybe even skull like with scorpion being in the hell realm for generations. overall i was happy with the film tho
I'm guessing it was in the games, that's why you suggested it, but in real life, Lee never made any of those noises. English dubbed movies, added those noises in.
The movie had a huge missed opportunity from the start after Hanzo died. He had the mark and everything but instead they shifted the protagonist role to Cole Young instead of showing Hanzo’s efforts in the nether realm and his return to fight Bi-Han. The movie in my opinion as a hardcore fan, would have been so much better if Hanzo had remained the protagonist of the film and entered the tournament as Scorpion and so much more interesting as it would better connect his lore from the games to the film rather than adding a new and lame character with disappointing powers that are in no way related to his father
i love him and he was amazing as scorpion and thats probably the best thing about the movie along with sub-zero, its just that i didnt expect a 60 year old guy to play scorpion lol. if its hiroyuki sanada like how he was in maybe rush hour 3, then it would probably be better. thats just imho
Joe Taslim is so underrated. He’s a rare mix of a great martial artist that can actually act. Check out The Raid and The Night Comes For Us which are 2 great movies
He and Iko Uwais, the main character from The Raid along with Yayan Ruhiyan a.k.a The Mad Dog are from Indonesia which is my country. And they are good martial artists who can acts and show the world what Pencak Silat (Indonesian Martial Art) is. Too bad in Indonesia, Joe mostly played in comedy or drama movie while Iko and Yayan go International and even appeared at The Force Awaken as The Kanjiklub members and got wasted.

Dude I guffawd in the movie theater when that happened because sweeping legs is my open in MK. I usually follow it up a second time because no one expects it and it was priceless watching it on the silver screen
Yeah there was a little too much fan service in this movie, and a chunk of it was cringe, but I very much enjoyed that scene. I definitely exhaled air through my nose.
the hanzo fight at the beginning was by far the best fight, him killing all the lin kuei and then the fight with bihan was what the rest of the fights should’ve been like
@@umbrellaunderdog i mean in terms of weight, during that fight they were actually damaging each other constantly, it actually felt like someone was gonna die, the rest of the fights were weak as shit and they all had hella cuts anyway, also no one brought up street fighter idk why ur talking about it

started off great. Loved kano, but fell flat quickly and imo the climax fell flat too.. It didn’t feel like mortal kombat at all after the opening scene
Cole was probably the most faithful to the lore tbh... Jokes aside, Kano was somehow better than any previous portrayal of the character... Sonya and Jax were solid. Mileena got shafted =/ she was a prop. But Nitara fans got it the worst lmao
@@trenken your stupid. Have you ever seen the raid or the wolverine. Bloodiest martial art movies ever made, joe tasilm is basically what inspired daredevil long running single shot fight scenes
The Raid is excellent. It's quite violent with scenes of brutal gunplay (in the first half) and martial arts throughout. The characters get beaten badly but don't go down easy, which does give a bit of a superhuman feel to the fights. It's an intense movie that puts a lot of action movies to shame. The Raid 2 is also great, but it's a much longer film.
Superb review here. I totally agree with Kano and Sub Zero. They carried this film. (I also want to give a shout out to Kabal, I thought they did a good job with him.) And yes, this movie could have been so much better if they edited it correctly and the choreography was meaningful like The Raid. Shout out to Joe Taslim who is also in that film.
Kabal was SO well done. Absolutely LOVED how he was portrayed. The initial scene where he was introduced was layered with cheese so I was like "Uh oh" but as soon as the fighting started... yeah, Kabal. That sums the movie up, I think.
@@ah00dii85 They don't do a good job of explaining the Earthrealmers aiding Outworld, and even with their golden boy, Sub-Zero, there's some weirdness going on because we have absolutely zero idea how or why he wound up there, as per the movie. The fact that Shang Tsung contracted out the Lin Kuei never came up, and it's an event that happened hundreds of years in the past, yet Bi Han is still alive and well, with zero explanation.
I thought that was kind of cool because some people might go for the head but the body is a bigger target so they might go for that too... I thought it was cool because she didn’t know it was armor, so he was saved by that deception.
@@educateyourself3872 I admire your positivity, but that was definitely dumb. A good cut to the neck is more effective than one to the back, and I’m surprised a trained killer would take their chances slicing his back which is obviously platted by something VS his exposed neck lol
Bruh Kung Lao placing his hand on Kano’s shoulder and Kano whispering “The fuck?” had me in stitches. Lawson carried the second act of the movie on his back.
I really hate the decision to add cole young to the movie, like the dude literally cant do anything alone he even need help from his wife when fighting against goro. Like holy hell there's like thoundsands of way he could die in the movie, its a shame they didnt take that oportunity
If they do make a sequel, an interesting idea would be Cole trying to recruit Johnny Cage, and he is not interested. Finally, Cole gets killed/severely injured protecting him and he finally decides to join up.
After finding out that the sequel is the actual tournament this first movie makes a lot more sense . Hopefully they get a bigger budget and that they work on the editing
This movie made no sense. 4 of the 8 tournament fighters are DEAD and raiden won't compete, so make that 5. Including the tournament champion. This movie was utter garbage. I guess mortal kombat is just Johnny vs Sonya.
I laughed so hard at that. He basically showed up and had to explain why he showed up because the movie doesn't show you what triggered that (because it was absolutely fucking arbitrary/nothing triggered it other than we want this to happen here)
I really would have preferred the Quan Chi story over shoehorning somone's headcannon OC(Cole) into the movie, he was unnecessary to further Scorpion's plot.
The guy who played jax said he made the mistake of watching the raid the night before his fight scene with Taslim. "I gotta fight this dude tomorrow?" 🥶
@@ricardog5180 yes I agree directors and writers didn’t understand the tournament and the rules of the different realms. That's what happens when you add two B list film stars (Sanada being A list in Japan) at the opening sequence, then throw in a bunch of D list actors, in a film that should have an A list budget. I think Jackie Chan needs to direct and choreograph fight scenes. He did not do quick cuts and you felt the pain of the fights he was in from many of his own films.
The first 10 minutes of this movie was freaking perfect the fight choreography was excellent the dynamic between scorpion and sub zero and how they became enemies was great. Everything about the first 10 minutes I loved! Then the rest of the movie fell apart. Had the movie focused more on scorpion and sub zero it would have been a great film.

The only person who showed pain or emotion during fights seemed to be Sub-Zero. The scenes where he gets impaled in his arm and when he takes off his mask gave me goosebumps
One thing that was very dumb and hilarious that I think the writers missed was when Scorpion was trying to talk to Cole Young in Japanese. Like dude, you think he has any idea what he’s saying?!?!?

I liked Kung Lao, Jax, Kano was funny, Sub-Zero and Scorpion were cool, I enjoyed the blood and gore, and had fun with it. Definitely hope it gets a sequel and they introduce new characters like Johnny Cage, Kitana, Shao Kahn, etc.
A little late to this, but yes I agree. It had everything I wanted from a Mortal Kombat movie. There needs to be another one. Especially now that its hard to come by good ‘based on existing IP’ type movies. I think people would be on board with a sequel… especially now.
Cole’s role as a the audience surrogate should have been Johnny Cage’s and his role as the leader should have been given to Liu Kang. His only interesting trait is that he’s Shirai Ryu, but they don’t even use that (or Scorpion for that matter) too much.
Or the director of “The Night Comes For Us” on Netflix. The fights in that movie are very well choreographed and even more brutal than The Raid. It also has Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim in it.
They need to let Joe and The Raid team do the choreography and camera work. Could you seriously imagine how amazing it would be if Gareth Evans directed the next one
All bad things aside, WTF moment: Kung Lao death after literally 0.0.sec of fighting against Shang Tsung, and the rest of cast simply shrug off his death as if it was some random standby guy, and not 2nd best Earth warrior.
That bothered me too. Kung lao wasn't weakened or tired or anything and Shang tsung just takes him and kills him like a defenseless puppy. If shang tsung a souls steal can be used at any time with no offensive measures then how can he be beaten?
See Street Fighter Assassin's Fist it's much better not perfect but it will help get the bad taste of this abomination out of your mouth. Also Cole the Crane Fly pass it along =3
The most common problem with modern action and herofilms today is that there´s rarely any clear sence of how much damage a character can take - it varies from scene to scene, wich makes it very hard to care about anything beacuse its impossible to calculate the risk.
Liu Kang puts hand on Kano’s shoulder. Kano: “The fuck..?” Whole theater burst out laughing. You can literally rewatch this movie for Kano and Sub Zero alone, but I’d rewatch it for Kabal personally. Whoever did kabal gets all the props. He looks badass. Sounds badass. His moves are badass. He has that mob accent and I love it. His arms are burned, you can hear him trying to breathe through his respirator. He was the coolest and most authentic character to me. Followed by Kung Lao. Both of them were amazing. Sub Zero was menacing and amazing as well. Everytime he showed up, the beat dropped and you could feel the tension in the theater. Scorpion was cool but I wish they used him more. I understand this is a pre tournament film so hopefully it makes enough money for a sequel because the potential is definitely there. Just work on the editing and the dialogue. Make the fights a bit more realistic and brutal. I’m all in for more mortal kombat films. I liked this one. 7/10
Kabal was a surprise for me, didn't expected him to be great, and answering your question, he was portrayed by a stuntman and voiced by Damon Herriman, the guy who plays Charlie Manson in the last Tarantino movie which came out, and about Kano, he filled Johnny Cage's cocky ass role in this one, stealing the spotlight, people don't talk much about Jax and Sonya but i liked them as well

You're telling me Goro... PRINCE GORO, the guy who rips people in half for a living, didn't rip a single person in half in this movie? Saw it last night, it was just okay. It didn't hype me up the way I wish it did 😭
@@the-othermr.e1495 Fuck, you're right, that would have been a great twist - Hype up Goro, up the stakes and get rid of Cole who already served his function as audience surrogate at that point.
If Gareth Evans made a Mortal Kombat movie, the universe would implode due to its sheer awesomeness. I was so disappointed that he didn't get to make Deathstroke.
As someone who grew up playing the games, I was so excited for this movie just to see a better done version than the 90s movies. But damn. This movie made the 90s versions look good. I rage quit half way through and had to just give up all my nostalgia just to watch the next half.
The only fight in the movie that felt like it had weight and was brutal was Scorpion and Sub zeros fight at the very beginning. Everything else was kinda as you said weightless
It felt like the tone in the first act of the movie was completely different from the rest. As others have said most of the acting throughout the rest of the film was wooden and boring. How did they pick such a stale actor for a main character? Kano stole the show because he had no actual competition. I would have enjoyed a story more focused on Scorp/Zero feud than using Cole as something to be centered around. Even though he's not an a-list actor he still could have put some heart in the role, which was laughable at best.
The thing I hate the most was that they killed off good characters and had little screen time. I'm totally not upset that my boi kung Lao died after giving 20 minutes of screen time.

I’ve been seeing a lot of complaints about the editing. I personally didn’t have that much of an issue with this, albeit mainly for this reason: At least no one here takes 16 cuts to hop a fence. 😉
When Liu released the fire dragon to finish him, I thought it was going to bite his torso off. I was very disappointed... Very anticlimactic. The same with Scorpion's finisher... No skull face. WTF...
The reason why they probably do quick cuts because they don’t want the audience to see the stunt double. This is a problem for a lot of movies as some stunt doubles look too different from their actors.
Honestly, if your actors aren't commited to doing most of their own stunts in an action flick, then maybe they should've just focused on more animated films. Hell, some of the characters are masked up and could easily be swapped.
*laughs in John Wick* Keanu Reeves is in his 50s and does a better job then all the fighters in this. Besides, a lot of the actors in this ARE martial artists lmao. They need a better cinematographer, fight coordinator, and writer, cause the fights in this were trash. Besides the opening and ending fights with Scorpion and Subzero, which should have been the main focus anyways.
Man, they didn’t even try with Mileena, she’s supposed to be an altered clone of Kitana, but they just blackfaced her and told her not to wipe her face off after eating a cherry pie.
And get this, they rather exchange an Asian woman with a black woman for the sake of "diversity", but Mileenas actual design would have been diverse as it was. She looked so shitty and boring, except in the very end when her mouth opened up wide. I think we all know how Kitana is going to look like 🙄

Speaking of which, a majority of the trailer had Sub and Scorp

Yepppp
I don't have an issue fundamentally with a new character, but Cole was very uninteresting and the actor is very wooden (he's pretty though..)
Why "luring" with SubZ and Scorpion when they can just make that as the whole movie.

Same then I thought he was the baby until I remembered the baby was a girl. They really should have left the character of Cole out.

A scorpion vs sub zero spinoff would get my money
I dunno if I'd agree, Sanada didn't seem like he cared at all.
Forget that it's a video-game adaptation and focus on making a martial arts epic, focusing on the blood-feud between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

i like how they made a Mortal Kombat movie without an actual Mortal Kombat tournament
they're like "nah we'll save that for a sequel...if we get to make one"
Right???
that was the biggest drawback.
Yups
Honestly, Johnny Cage could've had Coles role as the person people have to explain the lore to, that's all Cole was in the movie
I was thinking the same thing the whole time.
Lol, I thought cole was scorpion
