  • This is the second part of the saga os Sigmundur Brestisson. In this part, his arch nemisis Tróndur í Gøtu seeks to take revenge and end Sigmundur's life. Sigmundur eventually has to flee his home island of Skývoy and swim to the Southernmost island of Suðuroy. To visualise how far he actually swam, Skývoy is the fourth southermost island that you can see on the map. He swam from the north side of that island down to the southernmost island

    How old is this song?

    • @elkknowsbetter3199
      @elkknowsbetter3199 3 года назад +14

      Written down in 1700s but the song probably older than that as kvæði are used to tell stories and it has been around since the 1300s

      @tamerofhorses2200 3 года назад +8

      The subject of the kvaedi takes place in the 10th century. The saga of Brestisson can be dated to around that time or later. So pretty old.

    • @davidnattestad7627
      @davidnattestad7627 3 года назад +8

      this kvæði is actually part the "newer" kvæði category. The terninology for the newer kvæðir is that the poet is known and are mostly written in the 18th century, the older ones are all of such distinct that the poet or author is unkown and much older. The poet is the well known faroese poet Jens Christian Djurhuus commonly known as Sjóvarbóndin. He also wrote several other well known kvæði which we still dance to today e.g. Gudbrands kvæði and Ormurin langi

      Faroese is closer to Icelandic than Norwegian. Look at the difference. Vinland is Northa America, which does not belong to Norway. If you mean Finland, that is not even the same language family.
