There ware no gentlemanly agreements or humane treatment of prisoners. As an African, what was perpetrated against the Soviet Union was akin to Belgian excesses in Congo. There were none Allied against the mendacity of that, likewise the Western Allies were perfectly comfortable with Fascism if it did away with Communism.
The way to understand the past is to see how it plays out in the present. The Western Allies are now perfectly comfortable with Fascism if it does away with Russia (or any other nation-state not subject to outside control). No Western nation was under the same pressure to maintain its existence against Nazi Germany like the Soviet Union. Name one!
Likewise Japan was armed to the teeth so long as its arms did for China what Germany's did for Russia. For this reason the Russian Victory Day commemorations are of far greater significance because a REAL tool of what was to become 'Neoliberalism' was setback by the Russian sacrifice, just as the same applied for the Chinese Communist victory in 1949 and Vietnam in 1975.
How can individuals in Western nations, losing less throughout WW2 than Russia or China lost in single battles, even open their mouths with nonsense about their sacrifices 'being equal' or the debt owed of similar magnitude?! The Western Allies weren't fighting for their survival, only for their right to dictate such to others. You will never know the difference.
