- Found this old VHS tape in my closet and converted it digital. Turns out this interview is a rare uncut piece of footage from a show (that shall remain nameless) that aired in 1998. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains shares his insights on Metallica and the current state of rock and roll.
For everyone who thinks Jerry Cantrell was "forgotten about" or "jealous of" Mad Season: Cantrell's solo albums peaked at #28 & #33 respectively. Mad Season's "Above" peaked at #24. You guys are acting like Cantrell sold 50,000 copies & Mad Season went triple platinum. NOT the case. I LOVE Layne Staley but Cantrell is & always has been the foundation of AIC & we're damn lucky to have him. The "jealousy" he touches on in this interview has been blown way out of proportion.
Indeed. I think people need to see the last part of the interview because its not really jealousy. he didn't even dislike Mad Season. He was just a little betrayed that Layne went on with Mad Season instead of focusing on a possible new AIC record.
To be honest Jerry has said that he never really wanted to do a solo album and rumor at the time was that a lot of Boggy Depot was supposed to be an AIC album. They tried again to record in 98 but Layne was just not well physically. They managed to do 2 songs and that was it. To be honest I'd rather have that one last AIC album with Layne than the Mad Season album.
@@MrTechselect mad season is Just too good not to exist man
I get the feeling from other interviews, Jerry really had nothing but love for Layne and the other bad mates. He is a guy that sees the glad as half full, not happy empty.. Love him!
@@tomasribeiro2298 I honestly I would’ve rather had more AIC, mad season is great but they don’t really touch AIC imo. I’m more happy that we got solo Jerry albums
I've seen people on coke.. lots of times.. you can tell Jerry did a line or 2 within a few hours of this interview...glad he's sober now though.. great musician great guy
+jeff cordova well Im sure he's not wearing them glasses to be cool and im pretty sure he aint got a cold xD.
I said the same thing in part 1! He is so freaking high on coke! He can’t put a sentence together. Agitated.... but I love his art, his work is really great.
You mean to tell me a rock star is coked up? You're good!
😂yep line em up I'm 60 I've been doing meth for 40 years and I'm as healthy as a newborn baby 😂all about in the mind 😮😂
discounting all the "you knows"... for a guy high off his brains on cocaine... he's incredibly articulate.
We know ur Jerry Cantrell... lol
God.. This guy is my hero I want to meet him so badly!
I've always wondered what he thought of Mad Season.
Jerry and Layne were BFFs, equally creative, but very different people. I think Jerry knew how talented Layne was--not to mention he loved his voice--but i think he wanted to keep Layne all to himself, perfecting the band and their sound overall then & in the future. Jerry is very controlling, single minded, and much more rigid. Whereas Layne was a true creative, intelligent but kinda flaky, like a butterfly, flitting to whatever pretty flower came along in his life. It had to hurt Jerry a lot when Layne not only dove into Mad Season, but when he said that Mad Season made him the most proud of anything he's ever done, because he wasn't bored all the time. Whereas AIC, for Jerry, is all Jerry ever wanted (and is why they're still around, he can't let go). Very different mindsets, very different goals. Eventually the band would have imploded anyway, with Layne flying off somewhere, Jerry clinging desperately to his leg... 💔🎤🎸💔
Damn Jerry is hot!!!!
Yes, yes he is!
Well, Jerry said himself that he went to see Mad Season and wished he were up there.
Thank you a lot for posting this.
@MrTufflong The first time he mentioned this was during an interview for Playboy. It wasn't in the magazine but in a video online. He told the girl who was interviewing him that he was at the Moore Theater show and he wished he was on stage and was feeling jealous. He also told her he had never talked about that before.
pinaccle of badassery
i believe he sniffed something before this interview

Mad season was a collab of THREE grunge bands. Jerrys solo project was, well, a solo project
he really looks like he's on coke. lol, in the first part of the interview he snorts real hard as if to attain a drip. and he's REALLY enjoyin that smoke. lmao.
Coked up
Yeah man thanks.
In some wayz I like Jerry's solo stuff better than AIC's music! Degredation Trip and Boggy Depot are both really great albums from a lot of different persepectives!
The full 25 track Deg trip is a true masterpiece, what a phenomenal album
Me thinks you're absolutely correct. ;) toot toot!
It’s crazy to see him this..... out of it hah😳
He’s completely with it tho, he’s obviously high likely on coke but he’s totally functional and fully engaged in the interview. Being way out of it would be more like nodding off from heroin or pills etc. he’s extremely into this interview likely because he was high
Woah- he smokes ALOT!
sandramorrison99 I mean at the time he was addicted to coke he cleaned up after Layne died and he’s one of the best musicians in my opinion but he was a cokehead at one point
He drank a lot and did a lot of coke also, he got sober in 2003 tho after some very very dark years which you can hear on his degradation trip album.
What interview is it where jerry is talking about how good of a vocalist layne is? I know it was like mid 90s or something?
Jesus he was coked up during this time
Didn't he just admit that? Doesn't matter anyways. Jerry's the guitar god.
He's not jealous. Just high
Mad Season stuff is good. But it isn't metal, that's why Jerry dislike it. Not jealousy. And I don't want to offend anyone but Jerry is the brain behind AiC, not Layne. That's why comeback Alice still kicks so much ass.
@opethinchains AND he's got sungglasses on in a DARK room
well it's obvious, you can't compare a "supergroup" like Mad Season and a solo project, if Jerry had a "supergroup" i'm sure it would have been as succesful as Mad Season or maybe more, it's all about the media, supergroups?? come on!
Carmona Roberto it kinda was a super group. I know he had Rex from Pantera and Rob from Metallica as the bassist. not sure on the drummer though.
@@rm25088 those were 2 different records, Rex played on 5 tracks on boggy depot and Sean did the drums and then les claypool and a member of fishbone did the other tracks. Deg trip was rob on bass and mike bordin from faith no more on drums. Still not really comparable to mad season which was a collaborative group effort while Jerry’s projects were solely written by him and he just brought friends in to play some of the instruments. If Jerry formed a group at that time tho I think they would’ve done well.
interesting
No one likes being overshadowed.
He's stoned.
His nose is drippy, he sounds like he's got a cold or hay fever or something.....
He is so on coke
All AIC fans need to stick together but new AIC isnt AIC, and it basically sux, I heard thew new AIC on the radio the other night. Just more garbage. Would rather leave it then take it. And I dont agree that Jerr is the brains behind AIC. Jerr joined Laynes band Alice N Chainz. Thats what made them great, the whole band had input in everything. I will admit Im not to sure of the buisness side or financial side of the band.
Lol this comment is so wrong it’s hilarious, black gives way to blue is a phenomenal album that received a ton of acclaim and and sold over a million copies. Secondly Jerry was the main brains behind the band and it’s not even debatable, regardless of what you Layne super fans want to say Jerry was the primary songwriter from the very beginning of the band and that’s just a fact, almost all their biggest hits were written only by Jerry, outside of man in the box which Layne wrote the lyrics for would?/rooster/them bones/no excuses/down in a hole/sea of sorrow/bleed the freak/grind/heaven beside you/over now/got me wrong we all written by jerry alone, there are many more he wrote alone as well, he was the primary songwriter and the mastermind of the band and that’s just a fact. Also Jerry did not join Layne’s band so get your facts straight, Layne joined Jerry and Sean’s band and then when they were trying to find a new name they decided to go with Alice In Chains which the name originally came from Layne’s old band. The fact still is Layne joined Jerry and Sean’s band and then they changed the name, You can literally find interviews of Jerry and Sean telling Story of how they finally got Layne to join the band after trying for awhile an auditioning other people. Lastly don’t say all AIC fans need to stick together and then say dumb bullshit like new AIC isnt AIC and it sucks, that’s the complete opposite of sticking together, they’re still AIC and nothing anybody says will change that, the 2 founding members are still in the band and the primary songwriter, they were at their peak with Layne in the band but they’re still a kickass band who’s amazing live, the band was a hell of a lot more than just Layne.
