Medical update: Jurickson Profar has been diagnosed with a concussion and a cervical (neck) strain. He was discharged from the hospital overnight and is currently resting. We will continue to provide updates on his status when possible.
And he was diagnosed as a 2024 NL ALL STAR. As a Padres fan, we love our Profar. Glad JP was ok after that. There was another collision in Chicago either shortly before or after. They had us worrying. Kim took the brunt of that one.
I'm a Giants fan and I was listening to the radio broadcast. Dave Fleming was calling the game. What he described as Profar was walking off and then collapsed was utterly chilling. You could hear it in Fleming's voice how scary and worrisome the moment was. It brought a thud to my gut out of the seriousness of the situation. I hope Profar will be just fine.
Profar is a great player and he was having a good season as the main left fielder for the Padres. I feel so bad for the Padres cause they currently don't have Tatis and now they won't have Profar. I hope that Profar has a good and safe recovery and can return to the Padres. Get well soon Jurickson Profar
@@NoSpillsChills Why do you say that? They are currently in 2nd place of the NL West with the record of 49-38. They have a good shot on making the Playoffs since 3 teams makes the Wild Card Round now
I've always loved sports, and I realize as I get older than I respect what these athletes have accomplished in their life and I always hate when something scary like this happens. It's super interesting to me to understand the medical side behind injuries like this, so thank you Brian for these videos.
Gotta correct you with a common misconception: you can't train for a "strong chin". Fighters can train their neck or clench their jaws as hard as they can to absorb the blow but it will only provide minimal negation from being KO'd. It's all about how hard the other fighter hits or where the hit landed that determines whether someone goes to sleep of not. Moreover, fighters have sustains more head trauma than baseball players which arguably makes them even more susceptible to being knocked out.
@Bruh Bruh if you think this has more force than a fully wound up flying knee into a shooting opponent you need to stop watching MMA 😅. there is barely any extension on the knee here
@@jeremychristian7 combat sports in a way is self selecting. Some people have more fluid surrounding their brain and thus have more cushion. Many fighters with a strong “chin” probably have more fluid and thus are actually better at taking headshots.
I was knocked unconscious after getting a knee to my head diving to 1st base. While laying face down in the dirt I began convulsing. I was unconscious for 2-3 minutes. When I came to I was surrounded by many people. I tried to talk but could only grunt. My jaw was dislocated. Stuck wide open. My mouth and throat were full of dirt. The Dr with his hands putty jaw back in place. I had concussion. But otherwise my scans were normal. 2 weeks later I started football practice and never felt any I'll affects from the episode. Except when I would yawn my jaw would get stuck open. That was 1995. If that happened today I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be a football season.
I was at the game… it looked terrible in real time. The concerning thing was how long it took for the stretcher to get out there. It took quite a long time. I’m glad he’s ok though
When it happened I felt he should have been placed on stretcher w c collar. I couldn't believe trainers allowed him to try to walk especially after his failed 1st attempt. I hope he's well and nothing serious that could affect his physical abilities.
That was a really interesting thought about how the location of the injury could have damaged the baroreceptors in his carotid to elicit vasodilation. Learned about this in my capstone last semester, keep up the good work!
Interesting to compare this to the Tavares incident a while back. Point of impact was different when we see it in slow-mo but at actual speed you can imagine both medical teams had similar concerns and went through some similar steps (also interesting to look at the different personnel).
And Tavares also tried to get up and fall over well he was trying to get up and stand up on his own power theses injuries are very very scary JT and Profar had pretty similar injuries pretty much the same ways also but for Profar he tried to walk off the field on his own power but JT couldn't even stand up properly....
@@gohabs8918 Yeah, I went back to watch that Tavares clip afterward (unfortunately Doc never broke that one down for us) and what struck me the most was the team doctors that came out including the Habs' doctor and immediately restrained and stretched Tavares. @@kingcorey9762 absolutely! The image of Tavares trying to get up will always stick with me. Not gonna lie that injury gave me flash backs of the John Tavares injury where he also got a knee to the face by Corey perry.... it's also a video on this channel

Don’t really get what on earth the medical staff was thinking here. In a recent Mets game there was a collision and out of pro caution there was a cart brought out with one player carted off. This looked way worse and yet no card was considered or he wasn’t even helped to walk off the field.
I wasn't at the game, but a benefit of watching on TV is the close up shots. Profar was alert, aware, joking around and didn't seem in distress while on the ground...then again he was the same way after he stopped the fist time and after he fell. It would appear that his body and his conscious were not on the same page.

F1 drivers have accelerometers in their ear piece to monitor for Excessive G force on the head. Maybe it’s time to consider similar solution for all sports? Could also be used to track repetitive sub concussive head collisions as well
It took an uncomfortable amount of time for the cart/medical staff to handle this situation (I was there). I hope in the future they can be more expeditious.
Not really sure if this would have helped or not. but I have to wonder if either player called the other off by declaring "i got it." In baseball that is the signal to back off and let your team handle the play. Most of the time a collision can be avoided if you here those words you get out of the way and no one gets hurt. Perhaps that could have happened in this case and Profar doesn't get hurt, Who' knows. The only time, that I am aware of, where a player got hurt when is when Joe DiMaggio called Mickey Mantle of of Willie Mays' Fly Ball in the 1951 World Series and Mantle caught his spike in a storm drain; which blew out his knee and affected the rest of his career. Outside of that I have never seen a player get hurt when called off. Again I am not sure this would have happened in this case cause I am not sure either player called it.
It drives me crazy when a player is injured and other players are around him. I understand why, but back the fuck up and give the medical team the time and space to do their job.
Is the other guy ok? It looks like he got his junk elbowed or something. When he was rolling around he started grabbing at it and took the weight off of it.
So perhaps to give you more insight into why they had concern was the fact that he had gotten up once prior to passing out. He took a few steps then had to stop and put his hands in his knees before going to the ground again. Some time passes then he gets back up, takes a few steps then completely passes out.
You kind of try to sort of explain what kind of happened here and it sort of makes sense but if you kind of sort of worked on your spoken English skills you would kind of sound more credible as a sort of expert.
Doubt that , more likely he passed out either due to the blow to his neck or from getting up from laying down too fast I’ve fainted from that several times
