I’m glad it was released in exactly the form it was. Why would we want fewer Beatles tracks in the world? I’ll take ‘em all!

I agree with your rationale for how to assemble the single album version (although it absolutely could and should be 15 tracks instead of 14, which then enables a more equitable 6 for each Paul and John). And your side 1 is great and nearly the same as mine, but your side 2 falls apart completely with what was included versus what was left off. On my side 2, Martha My Dear, I Will and Rocky Racoon would be Paul's Songs, and Everybody's got something to Hide, I'm So Tired, and Cry Baby Cry would be John's and Savoy Truffle would be George's, with album ending with Cry Baby cry. . My version would then have Birthday/Helter Skelter released as a non-album single, as well as Mother Nature's Son/Yer Blues as another single. But ultimately, every attempt to do this best single white album game fails, because no one can agree on which songs to include, because there are just too many great songs to ever fit onto a single album. I've done this many times with many different people, and every single one of them picks a different selection of songs as 'the best 14 or 15'. So, yes, the white album is the greatest double album ever, even with all its imperfections.

My selection for a single White Album would be:
    Side one
    01. "Back in the U.S.S.R."
    02. "Dear Prudence"
    03. "Glass Onion"
    04. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
    05. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
    06. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"
    07. "Martha My Dear"
    08. "Blackbird"
    Total length: 24:23
    Side two
    01. "Birthday"
    02. "Not Guilty"
    03. "Mother Nature's Son"
    04. "Sexy Sadie"
    05. "I Will"
    06. "Savoy Truffle"
    07. "Cry Baby Cry"
    08. "Good Night"
    Total length: 23:05

For me you've got this close to my selections. I would've dumped 3 Lennon songs (Glass Onion, Yer Blues & Good Night) - and put in 3 other Lennon songs (I'm So Tired, Everybody's Got Something To Hide & Sexy Sadie). Eight songs per side would have worked. I would include "I Will" & "Savoy Truffle" (George deserves 3).

This attempt makes more sense than any other attempt I've ever seen! Even though I'd personally have had more John songs on the second side and got rid of some Paul songs. But very interesting

There are usually two ways of compiling a single white album. One is based on what could reasonably be expected that the Beatles themselves would release given the circumstances of the time, the other is based on songs you personally like or dislike. This can be further broken down into two formats, one being what could fit on a vinyl record, and the other being a digital playlist or CD that has no strict time limits.
In every case each Beatles fan comes up with a different list! I even come up with a slightly different list myself every time I think about this, most songs remain the same but some get swapped out.
Luckily we have playlists and each fan can make a White Album to suit their own preferences, and it can be of any length. My own WA playlist remains consistent, too much for a single album, not enough for a double, but on a playlist the time doesn't matter. I got rid of songs I don't particularly care for and added in Hey Jude and the unreleased Not Guilty and Child Of Nature.
If anyone cares, this is my WA playlist:
    Back in the U.S.S.R.
    Dear Prudence
    Glass onion
    Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
    Child Of Nature
    While my guitar gently weeps
    Martha my dear
    I'm so tired
    Blackbird
    Piggies
    Don't pass me by
    I will
    Julia
    Birthday
    Not Guilty
    Mother nature's son
    Everybodys got ~ monkey
    Sexy Sadie
    Helter skelter
    Long long long
    Revolution (single)
    Honey Pie
    Cry baby cry
    Hey Jude
Deleted Wild honey pie, The continuing story of Bungalow Bill, Happiness is a warm gun, Rocky Raccoon, Why don't we do it in the road, Yer blues, Revolution 1, Savoy truffle, Revolution 9, Good night.

Nice thoughts, pretty reasonable good selections. If, per chance a Single album came to be, Back in the USSR starts Side One and Birthday would start Side 2. The other six songs on Side One should have included Dear Prudence, Why Don't We Do It in the Road, Bungalow Bill, While My Guitar Gently Weeps Happiness is a Warm Gun and Good Night by Ringo ending side one. Side Two, following Birthday, would be Yer Blues, Blackbird, Helter Skelter, Savoy Truffle, and Revolution I at the end with Paul's Ob La Di Ob La Da at the end.

(15)Why Dont We Do It In the Road
I would take criticism for the running order, but I am comfortable with the selections. I would include Yer Blues if the recording was more like what John performed with Dirty Mac for the Rolling Stones Circus thing. I still think this leaves off alot of good material like Rocky Racoon, Cry Baby Cry, Im so Tired, and Mother Nature’s Son. Not to mention that they should have included Hey Jude. It bothers me that so many singles of theirs can not be found on any album. Especially the B-sides. In my opinion, they should have made 2 singles out of many of them. We can work it out/Day Tripper, Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane, Paperback Writer/Rain, I Feel Fine/Shes a Woman, Get Back/Dont Let me Down, Hey Jude/Revolution, and Come Together/Something, just off the top of my head. If they thought so lowly of B-sides, why put the other song that was competing to get the A-side as the B-side? I know they found alot of their performance material in the early days from B-sides, but that comment from George about either elbowing a song or making it a B-side, is pretty illuminating on that.

I’d like to respectfully challenge you on a couple of comments that you have made. You say, Paul was the leader of the band at this time and led the musical direction of the band. Although Paul did have the ideal of Sergeant Pepper and magical mystery tour, one success, and one arguably a failure. It wasn’t Paul that wanted to get back to the basics on the white album. It was John’s idea, the fact that revolution 9 was included should prove my point. In the single revolution with this political message, Paul didn’t want to get into politics as the Beatles, but John did, so is John the leader of the band? Paul definitely was more pushy and aggressive in the recording studio, hence Ringo Starr walked out on the white album and George Harrison walked out on the let it be sessions. A leader of a band does not inspire that. It seems like the songs on the White album where the whole band was involved, like yer blues and happiness is a warm gun, John more than Paul invited the whole band to work together and create the songs. Paul Was more pushy, aggressive the studio, but John was the true leader of the band.

Lets build a new Beatles album, one to follow Abby Road. We can only use songs from each Beatles' solo work that was released upon or immediately after the break up. What songs do we have?

  • @AndyMakesPlaylists
    @AndyMakesPlaylists 2 месяца назад

Thanks, @therecordspinner. I propose that you expand this mind experiment, and re-imagine your new album as a BETTER two-record set. My two-LP version (greatly superior imo to the two-LP set that actually came out) would start with every song you mentioned.
That accounts for one LP's worth of material. But it's possible to make the second LP just as good. We next select the songs that SHOULD have been on the White Album but weren't. We deliver the four sides of their two most recent singles:
    "Lady Madonna,"
    "The Inner Light,"
    "Hey Jude" and
    "Revolution."
Yes, that means there would be two versions of "Revolution" on the album (the other being "Revolution No. 1"), which people would have found very cool when this album came out. (Remember how cool "Sgt. Pepper" seemed sporting two different versions of the title track?)
Plus we'd do this twice thing twice to prove that this wasn't a mistake! There would also be two versions of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The two versions would be the original White Album version but also -- and this is crucial = the acoustic version with the George Martin string arrangement (!) that appeared only on the album "Love." This might be the best version of them all and would be a highlight of the whole collection.
The rest of this album would be the best of the rest. We could easily fill up the rest of it with non-filler.
Without a doubt, if the Beatles had done it that way, the White Album would today be considered the best rock album ever released with no possible competitors.

For all its illuminating tracks, the White album is definitely a mess. However, with over 55 years now under the bridge, trying to make a single album out of it is sure to have someone ready to kill. And yes that includes “Revolution 9”.
