- Recently I found out that Orange is the New Black films tons of scenes about 25 minutes away from my house. And after finding that out, I couldn’t resist taking a drive over to check it out. I did a quick Google search and learned that all outdoor prison scenes are filmed at this location which is the abandon Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center which stands in for the exterior of Litchfield. If you ever have a day off or something, I definitely recommend taking a drive over there and checking it out.

I was just there this morning. Its beautiful. Very nice area and nice land! If anyone is planning on going please keep a few things in mind...
Cops patrol here. There were two cop cars circling around and when they noticed we were there they appraoched immediately. They were nice and respectful BECAUSE WE respected them as well. I told them we were only there to walk around and take photos and would leave shortly. I ASKED for permission to do this because there is a sign that says no tresspassing. The cop gave permission and even let us know where the cool spots were. So if you plan to go, repsect the land and property as well as the wild life (there is a family of geese who live here). Cops shouldn't have a problem.
Another thing to note... do not show up here when they are filming. You are likely to be fined and kicked out. Wait until the season has stopped filming and then go. But by doing this, you will miss out on a few things. Red's garden and greenhouse are taken away and the gates are locked so you cant go on the field. But it still worth it to go because you can see the loading dock, the tool shed and the benches in the courthouse where they gather in most outdoor scenes. Also, the Litchfield sign is taken down after filming.
TO FIND IT.... you need to take the back road around the lake. If you follow a gps it will take you to the ACTIVE side of the facility. Please dont go there. This is a real hospital with real mentally ill patients.
Just be respectful and you will have a great time.

And most of it was filmed in the Children's Ward! I lived there for 16 long months,and it felt like Jail! Everything was locked!

Omg this is awesome I’m not really a fan of the show but I grew up in Rockland county I was watching where the lady in the van was driving away from the prison and it showed a clip of the reservoir I use to fish in and I was like that looks really familiar so I searched it up and got the results I wanted awesome

Wow. I'm staying in Rockland in July, I would love to visit this place. could you tell me more about how to visit it and how much trouble I could get into?
They are beginning to film sometime in July so just be careful! But it would be really neat if you ran into or seen some of the actors!
What's the address? I'm trying to get a satellite image of the place to map out the actual location to create a Prison Architect version of it. I've found a blueprint of the place but having shots from the sky would help a lot too.

In season 5 there are a lot of scenes where the inmates run in hallways during the riot etc. Does someone know where that is filmed? Is it filmed in the studio or in the building you see in this video?

So I thought they were filming inside of an abandoned prison or hospital, but it seems they build the entire sets in doors. I don't know anything about filming, but that just seems like a LOT of work and then they tear it all down. Every detail is there and looks like a jail or prison. The bunks are really the ones in jails. Even the metal doors and ugly tile. Looks very good.
I want to see the indoor set too, but I read its in Astoria Kaufman studios ;(
By the way I heard the legal person busted her balls for just visiting the set.
This set is an old children's psychiatric hospital, and all the indoor scenes are filmed in the studio :)

Yeah it makes sense why the don't usually film on location. The studio has insurance and the abandon inside of whatever doesn't really.

I'm almost certain that they actually film the indoor shots here.
The shots where you can see the outside you're able to see the other buildings. If you watch the behind the scenes, they're actually inside this location. There aren't any fake sets. this place is mostly abandoned except for where they film.

Im gonna be in NY this year and I'm coming from out of state. I was wondering is it easy to find? Like can it be walked to or do you need to have a car to get there?
Jennifer Finley well that depends what part of New York you're going to be staying in. This place is in the middle of a nice neighborhood in Rockland, New York (i know, it's completely random but whatever), so if you happen to be in this neighborhood/town you wouldn't need a car. but if you're not staying in Rockland then you'd probably need a car or maybe even a bus. Also if you just google this place the address will pop up and you can just google map it to see how'd you get there. What part of NY are you going to be in?
SamiGProductions Manhattan, I did look up info on how to get up to that area and saw that there is a bus that goes near another Psychward that looks like it could be with in walking distance but not 100% sure.
Jennifer Finley I'd just be careful because the set is on NY State private property so if you go there it's considered trespassing and you could run into legal trouble
+Jennifer Finley It's pretty easy to get to, it's the childrens hospital at Rockland Psych, about 45 minutes from NYC, on Google Maps look for the building next to a lake, there's only one in the complex. Also, they film every scene inside that building, having snuck inside, you can see pretty much every set.
+Jennifer Finley You can take the CoachUSA bus from the Port Authority at 42nd street to Orangeburg, than it's around a mile away from the bus stop.

This is creepy as fuck to me, I was there in that same building about 6 years ago and they moved us from there to the new rcpc on the other side of rockland campus. The whole area is pretty creepy with all the abandoned old buildings around you.
Does it look similar to the show on the inside? I really want to get interior pictures of this building.
yeah its about the same from what ive seen on the show. they just added barbed wire over the old courtyard fences and a fence in front lobby which was the old main entrance.

Aj Paradiso not really. now that filming as begun they've amped up they're security and if you go to walk around usually someone will come over to you and ask you to leave. as long as you leave when they ask you too, you won't get in trouble. but if you don't leave they'll call a cop car to the set and escort you off (that happened to me one time when i went)
***** sort of. one of the women who worked there walked us off the set with a cop parked in the parking lot

No I don't guess it is sadly but it's cool how they turned a mental hospital into a prison.
No, but this prison is based off a real prison the real Piper spend time in, FCI Danbury
they said that the litchfield wasnt real and this backround is an abonden mall
yelyaH12 no it’s an abandoned psychiatric center. They started tearing the buildings down recently and re building them.
