Really helpful video! Definitely in the same boat just graduated from the university of Oregon with a business admin degree this past june. Although it was hard work didn't put the same effort outside the classroom in terms of my career. My sister is in her final year of med school and I looked into that field and learned about medical sales rep. It's great to know that there are people who were just like me who are now successful and that just because I started on the wrong foot doesn't mean I have to be stuck in a terrible position! Would you consider becoming a regional manager, Director, etc., etc.? Pros and cons to management. Managing people can be very difficult and honestly, not fun at all at times. I'm sure at some point I'll try to become a manager, but I'm not in a rush to get there. As long as you still enjoy knocking on doors and putting in the day-to-day work, I wouldn't try to move up. Grass always seems greener.
Sales reps always make more than manager's. That's usually why the tops sales person and the manger have friction. I've managed people it's a lot like being a mother. Hard work, long hours with very little recognition for all of your hard work to make your sales Representative or children successful. 😉😆
I met a sales rep over the weekend. He’s making good money well into 6 figs. I told him I was a physical therapist and I barely make $88k working 6 days a week. He did a pretty good job convincing me into looking into career in sales. Do you know therapists like myself who transitioned into sales?
I don't personally know any, but I'm sure there have been plenty that have transitioned. I've known AT's who have done it. Can definitely make the transition if you want, but I'd say you really have to want to be in sales to do it.
Confidence + knowledge, yes. But you also need to know how to read people. Know what they are thinking. Lots of hidden objections to uncover and overcome.

You've got to follow your passion. You are getting an MBA. Medical sales can provide you an opportunity to use your nursing and your MBA. Kolby nails it. Do you have "the it factor"? In addition to knowing things (which as a nurse you do) and being impressive, the "It Factor" managers look for is that "burning desire" to succeed? Money isn't everything, and hopefully it's not your top priority, but if you are going into sales, it's got to be a major priority. Hiring managers are looking for that next Top 10 rep to improve their team. Who will walk on stage? Who wants to win an award trip? Medical sales is an awesome career; none better. Good luck.

Just fyi, my program is free. You'll have to do the selling in person. And depending on the product, you'll have to service the customer too, whether that's meeting with patients or going into surgery, etc.

Hi Kolby, I'm a senior in nursing school and will graduate with my BSN in a few months. I am preparing to work a sales/recruiting job this semester and have an abundance of medical knowledge, as well as clinical experience working in an ER. If you were in my shoes, would you go all-in on trying to break into med sales or would you work as a nurse for 1-2 years first to be able to really market yourself as a reliable expert in the medical field?
If you’re sure you want to do med sales, I would recommend trying to get in now instead of sticking with nursing. Having nursing experience actually doesn’t have as much relevance to med sales and you may think. My guess is it would be harder to get into med sales after a couple years of nursing than it would right now.

Sounds like it's a volume issue. Need to connect with more employers about possible sales internships. You prob won't convince the ones who are already committed to only bringing on business students. Expand the number of companies and the number of industries until you find the companies who will take somebody that isn't a business major.

I’m 38, I’m going back to get my degree online. Am I too old to get into medical sales? I won’t graduate until 2022. I make 60,000 a year right now as a helicopter mechanic. I have zero sales experience. Can I get into sales before I graduate or do I have to my degree before I can get hired? Lilly is hiring for pharmaceutical sales in my area, is that something I should do to get my foot in the door?
Generally speaking, sales experience would be preferred. But again it's not an absolute. The only way to really find out is by trying to get into the industry. Have you applied to positions or had any interviews?
Maybe a little but not a lot (without knowing exactly the coursework). Candidates don't need to know biomedical engineering to be great in this industry. At the same time, it could be so unique that somebody wants to hire you bc of it.
Yes, I don't know about U.S. but in the UK a biomedical engineering/Biomedical materials is highly advantageous. Employers look out for people with those degrees and some make it even a requirement.
@@KolbyWoodMedicalSales If you plan on selling into the OR or interventional radiology it would be an advantage but companies have training for bringing you up to required basic level. most importantly is your attitude cause info can be acquired but not your personally.

Bc you don't need to be a clinician for this job. The companies will teach the reps enough of what they need to know, but the main focus is growing sales.

Having experience as a surgical tech would be helpful getting into med sales. I know a lot of previous techs who switched to med sales.

Definitely would recommend getting your degree. Most positions will require it.

I have zero sales experience. Can I get into sales before I graduate or do I have to my degree before I can get hired? Lilly is hiring for pharmaceutical sales in my area, is that something I should do to get my foot in the door?

Will a biomedical engineering degree from Harvard help me with this job?
Maybe a little but not a lot (without knowing exactly the coursework). Candidates don't need to know biomedical engineering to be great in this industry. At the same time, it could be so unique that somebody wants to hire you bc of it.
Yes, I don't know about U.S. but in the UK a biomedical engineering/Biomedical materials is highly advantageous. Employers look out for people with those degrees and some make it even a requirement.

Not necessarily, and depends what products you would be selling.
@@KolbyWoodMedicalSales If you plan on selling into the OR or interventional radiology it would be an advantage but companies have training for bringing you up to required basic level. most importantly is your attitude cause info can be acquired but not your personally.

Bc you don't need to be a clinician for this job. The companies will teach the reps enough of what they need to know, but the main focus is growing sales.

I just know that being street smart and getting Cs and Bs gets you places in life. My parents always say to me Cs get degrees and that’s absolutely true!
