  • The first in a series on the gear you need to get out in the woods over the winter months, and how to get the right stuff for less money.
In this one we look at the sleeping bag I use (and have for the last five years) and I explain why I think this one is worth spending your hard earned cash on.

I bought one of these in 2002 , and used it for 12 years all over Europe including the Brecon Beacons in very cold winter conditions, more roomy than Snugpak and very warm
I recommend this for military use, I also had the defence 1 and the Tropen for warm weather.
Quality is great it stood up to rough military use and never let me down
Use the two bags together for arctic conditions
Not as bulky as the issue bag , and lighter
Well designed I recommend this bag over the more popular snugpak bags as I find them too restrictive across the shoulders , especially in military kit with your rifle inside it.

They are a great bag. For years my bag was the Buffalo Bag, but this even beats that I think.

Any tips on 'airing out' and what to do if you have to pack it away quickly to prevent moisture build up? Cheers.

Carinthia make great stuff. The defense 4 was in the running when I was looking for a new bag but in the end I opted for the Finnish Defense Forces M05 bag (made by Carinthia) as it has more arm room and a reinforced footbox. Comes with a liner too.

@@greencraft4783 It wouldn't be worth replacing your Defense 4 with the FDF bag but if it ever got damaged beyond repair then it might be worth consideration.

hello! i bought also the used set, with the british version and the tropen , i have used it y years ago in winter by -17 deg. C under a closed Tarp. it worked very well. I also tryed it with a fleece inlet, it was very cosy inside.
The zippers are working very well bei both sleepingbags.
i ve got the set under 95 Eu. in a really good condition.
My kids also use the bags outdoors...

The British Army Medium Bag, the current issue one, is a copy of the Carinthia bag - you can get unissued ones on Ebay for £45 and they are 90% as good as the Carinthia if you want to save some cash. Perfect for UK use :)

For winters where it really gets cold you can not beat the old Canadian Army system. Had mine for a long time and although bulky the weight is worth it at -30 Celcius.

Use the same bag, did u know a lot of the squaddies turn it inside out before putting in bivvy bag so it blocks body moisture from penetrating the filling and it breathes through the bivvy bag reducing condensation, also when do u start using bivvy with it and what sort of pad do u use?

Hiya buddy good review. I considered this bag a while ago because its definitely a quality bag but I ended up buying the british army arctic bag. ( bouncing bomb ) it's definitely a bigger heavier bag but its absolutely bomb proof and definitely can handle winter. The main reason i bought it was the price they are common on ebay for 30 pound upwards. Just thought I'd put it out there for anyone on a budget. All the best. Chris

      @soggz4246 2 года назад

@@greencraft4783 Ok,thank you for the reply. Yes it is down filled and lighter, but to be perfectly honest, unless it is used in a more closed environment,ie a tent,I don’t think that it would be as hard wearing as the Carinthia that you so well demonstrated.
I just thought I would comment on the Rab,as I was looking at one at Go Outdoors,Bristol, earlier today, as I am in the market for a good hard wearing bag.

The above video title is incorrect. It should be Carinthia Defence, not 'Defense'. Defence is English; 'Defense' is a peculiar Americanism. Even Carinthia spells it correctly as the 'Defence 4'.
We're rapidly losing our culture, and that includes our proper English language. Please endeavour to preserve it.
