Unforgiven 3: He has screwed up the Unforgiven II relationship and is saying his greatest obstacle in all this is not that he can't forgive those who damaged him but that he can't forgive himself for damaging the one(s) who accepted him, wounds, scars, and all.
Mamma Said is one of Metallica’s most underrated songs to me but also one of the songs a lot of people bashed because it wasn’t typical Metallica. You should check it out
I’ve always viewed these 3 songs as 3 different stories about things that are unforgiving the first being time a boy grows up and doesn’t realise till he is an old man that how he could have done something better with his life if he had been more controlling but it’s to late now The second being a relationship and how you can’t control how people are The third being about how you can be so obsessed with 1 thing that you don’t see what happening around you then you blame yourself instead of fix it If you want to do a similar group of songs I’d recommend escape the face guillotine trilogy

One misconception about the other song is that it’s about how he can’t forgive her,it’s quite the opposite,she is unforgiven too meaning she understands him because they are the same “I take this key and I bury it in you,because you’re unforgiving too” Because she understands him,the key is the key to his heart

I think the unforgiven trilogy is very personel songs to James, and it deals with stuff from hes own live, and is basicly singing about himself.. im sure i heard him say this himself in some interview i heard long ago..

Epic trilogy!! This takes me back, soundtrack of my life, especially #I and #II. I had the luck to attend a show where they played #III wich is something they rarely do. As you say they are very understated in their lyrics but it definitely goes around this: #I - Forgive them #II - Forgive her #III - Forgive me. I heard 2 before 1, loved 2 more than 1, heard 3 and now I love 3 more than I love 2, but I’ve developed a love for 1 recently, but not as much as 2. Over time, 3 became less than 2.
