Please react to a movie called How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. It's a Thai movie, it centered around a young male who, after received news that his grandma got diagnosed with cancer, decided to take care of his grandma while he himself trying to secure his inheritance from his grandma. This movie is a seriously tear-jerker movie, full of family-themed lessons and, I can dare to say, this movie is a lot better than any family movies that you've ever seen or reacted before.
I give the movie five stars for the visual effects, the original story and the very fitting parallels to real world events. I would love to see a sequel if they could find another original solution to the conflict. (A sequel has been planned for a long time)
One thing I love about this movie is they didn't make the aliens pretty. Traditionally, ugly equates to evil, but District 9 makes you sympathise with the Prawns. They're refugees, victims. And the humans are the villains.
In District 9, the aliens are referred to as “Prawns” by humans, which is indeed a derogatory term due to their appearance resembling that of shellfish. The proper term for the alien species in the film is actually never specified, but they are generally referred to as “non-humans” or “aliens” in official documents and by the government within the context of the story.
Using a sci-fi film in 2009 to explore apartheid, migrant and refugee crises still holds true today. It's brilliant how it portrays society as disjointed since the bodies created to deal with the "aliens" waylaid any sense of humanity in their dealings. The point of Wikas becoming one of the aliens is to show how any of us could be subject to the same circumstance at any time.
Fun fact: This film was actually based on true events. It was based on events that occurred in District Six in Cape Town during Apartheid. Of course they just substituted the South Africans with aliens but a lot of the real world events (evictions, political stuff, etc) were mostly pretty accurate to the events.
I don't know if that's a fun fact...but you are correct. The townships are still like no other place on earth. My mother works there with a non-profit.
This movie received a Best Picture noination at the Academy Awards that year. It came along and blew people away, was a critical and commercial success, and had everyone going to see it. It really was gosh darn cool as heck.
I love Wickus's character journey. He was a coward, a racist, and he was selfish. But in the end he did the right thing and saved Christopher. He evolved.
Agreed. I would love to see more of him. He's incredibly talented, and his performance really grounded this film, though a fabulous screenplay never hurts (there aren't enough of them these days). Hollywood just doesn't seem to know what to do with him. I believe District 9 was his first film as well, though I could be wrong on that.
I haven’t watched this movie since it came out in 2009, and I still remember the plot, story and themes distinctly. Very unique and memorable film, Neil Blomkamp caught lightning in a bottle with this film.
This movie still feels relevant because it's been 15yrs and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Talk to some older folks and you'll start to realize that problems are never dealt with, only pushed on to future generations.
As my dude Slug says in Seismic Waves... "Things ain't been the same since Trayvon, s#*t, Things ain't been the same since Reagan, wait... ain't a single thing change from the days when the Gods went crazy and broke the languages."

Elysium is along the same lines expect about inequality. 4. Blomkamp a year ago was working on District 10. Though its been rumored its on hold again. It would continue the story from D9. 5. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what happens when you show someone "real" sci-fi: you blow them away. By "real" that I guess I mean like O.G. science fiction. Stuff like this movie and Arrival are much more interesting than Edge Of Tomorrow type of movies. Those are action movies that have a sci-fi setting, not really sci-fi. Not that action movies are bad in any way, they're super fun. But nothing beats a good O.G. sci-fi or horror movie that has real thought and weight behind it.
I kind of feel like it doesn't need to. I don't entirely see how they could recapture the same feeling as this one, with the gritty look, obvious social commentary, narrative framing device, and such.
In Buenos Aires, Argentina, there was a huge promotional campaign for this movie. Everywhere on the street you could find signs prohibiting aliens like the ones in the movie, even in the bathrooms of movie theaters and shopping malls there were signs separating human bathrooms from alien ones.

And the way they set it up like its a documentary adds so much more in terms of telling us plot rather than spoon feeding it to us or pulling it out of thin air, they make the world feel so real. As you can probably tell I really like this movie :)
I kinda figured their race is ran in a Caste System. This ship was was full of worker caste or slaves, they dont need to be smart. They said in the beginning that they think the command crew died of something. SO i think this is one of those races where they may have a worker caste, soldier cast and leadership caste. This ship was just workers where the leadership just happpend to die.
That was pretty much my interpretation as well. Christopher was one of the only smart ones to have survived. His son obviously inherited that intelligence.
I always assumed this was just one ship of several that maybe veered off course and got lost, eventually landing on Earth due to lack of fuel or food (hence why it ‘landed’ over Johannesburg instead of NYC or L.A.) Maybe the caste theory is correct, but this one ship only contained the lower level workers. The other ships may have arrived at their original destination. Plus, Christoper seemed to input a specific destination into the computer, so he knows where the other ships are or their home colony.
I just read that the director gave Gizmodo the alien's backstory which essentially went that they are a hive mind species and their leader on the ship died so the drones didn't know what to do since they lack the intelligence needed to right the situation and Christopher was the new born leader who was able to get the ship operating again.
Excellent film. It's also basically a sci-fi adaptation of South African issues. District 9 comes from the real life District 6 in Cape Town which the apartheid government declared a whites-only area and then evicted all the non-white people living there, moving them to other places (like the MNU does with District 10). You see the prejudice against aliens also mirrors apartheid society. And so does the naming. Christopher Johnson is almost certainly not the alien's real name; during apartheid, some white people couldn't pronounce black names and so they gave black people a "white" name which was easier to pronounce. Like Nelson Mandela's birth name was Rolihlahla. He got the name Nelson only when he went to school (in that case, from a black teacher because it was just how things were done).
Трудности в произношении имён не имеют никакого отношения к предубеждениям. Когда человек учит другой язык и имеет акцент, вы назовёте это предубеждением?
@AlisaM-L no not just difficulties. But here, a deliberate lack of interest in trying. I have a Chinese cousin who has a Chinese name and an American name, that is a difficulties in pronounciation, but her father never choose an "american" name because the family could correctly pronounce his name.
Such a great and underrated film from South Africa. For Diamond Dave's rating - He has high expectations for rating movies and doesn't give a high score easily. I loved his appreciation for this film.
Poor Wikus. Not the "brightest crayon in the box", as they used to say, and he had made some foolish and perhaps cruel decisions in his work, not even understanding the bigger picture, (yes, he made mistakes) but I do hope Christopher comes back to heal him. He worked to redeem his foolishness. I'm glad she knows that her gifts are from Wikus. (I don't defend some of his actions, BTW)
My favorite part of this film is that he resented turning into them at first. It didn’t make him more sympathetic toward them but actually disgusted. His change of heart was very organic and felt so real
I’m so happy you guys did a react to this movie. One of my favorites! The main actor Sharlto Copley is in another great sci-fi film with Matt Damon also directed by Neill Blomkamp called Elysium , another movie you guys may enjoy!
I'll be surprised if we ever get District 10 he's been trying to get it made for awhile. He wanted to do an Alien movie but Ridley wouldn't let him and them we got that dumpsterfire Covenant. Blomkamp has some short films here on YT, Oats Studios. I know Sigourney Weaver is in one. Some of them went on Netflix.
I was so disappointed he couldn't do an Alien film. I thought that if anyone could do a worthy follow up to the last good film in that franchise (Aliens) it would have been him. Instead we've gotten years of increasingly terrible garbage Alien movies. HUGE opportunity missed for everyone.
I remember bringing this movie up to a film professor who had never seen it and accidentally made myself a teacher's pet just for the recommendation. 😂
So glad you guys reacted to this! First watch for me was just completely astounded how dang good it is. Didn’t know what I was getting myself into 😂 Take care guys

This is one movie I need a sequel for
Looks like it's finally happening or close to happening.
@@BaddMedicineCant get our hopes up, might be on hold yet again. They've been on and off making a sequel for many years
👀 I didn’t even know it was being discussed!
@@SphericaICow Neill has confirmed he's doing it but we don't know anything more.
It's been a thing since around 2011, iirc. The project has never been abandoned, it's just an on and off thing that might happen someday.
This movie was great. Heartbreaking. But good
My new favorite reactors reacting to my favorite movie! Awesome! This is gonna be a treat :)
Worker caste or slaves. That's the thing, they don't need to have a social hierarchy at all. It could be entirely biological.
I just read that the director gave Gizmodo the alien's backstory which essentially went that they are a hive mind species and their leader on the ship died so the drones didn't know what to do since they lack the intelligence needed to right the situation and Christopher was the new born leader who was able to get the ship operating again.
@@bloomwiththestars That scans.
The fingernail scene everyone was squimish but Quinn and he was just setting there looking 🤣.. Very good reaction from my favorite guys & channels!!!
Watch ELYSIUM 2013. Written and directed by Neill Blomkamp , Matt Damon main character. very impressive visuals , You will like it)))))
Watched this one in theatres not knowing what to expect, just blown away.
This movie made me hurt, thanks a bunch for showing it. Its a gem!
Me too, I think it’s the point. Empathy ❤ not /s btw, I agree with you.
Such a great and underrated film from South Africa.
For Diamond Dave's rating - He has high expectations for rating movies and doesn't give a high score easily. I loved his appreciation for this film.
ooh, i studied this film for my gcse in film studies, so interesting to analyse and learn about!!
When I saw this in the cinema, the beginning was so well done it made me feel genuinely ashamed to be a human.
Множество людей в мире делают много хороших вещей.
Занятно, как люди любят ненавидеть себя.
Me too, but I cried for him in the end anyway
Sharlto Copley Is awesome. Definitely check out another Neill Blomkamp movie with him, Elysium.
One of my favorite movies of all time! It did not get anywhere near the appreciation it deserves
My favorite part of this film is that he resented turning into them at first. It didn’t make him more sympathetic toward them but actually disgusted. His change of heart was very organic and felt so real
I was 28 when I saw this and it creeped me out so bad I had nightmares. I watched again when I was a lot older and could appreciate it more.
The true tragedy of this movie is Christopher's promised return in "three years" never happening, with no sequel even after 15
A great movie that definitely deserves a sequel cause that would be awesome on Christopher returning
Besides Elysium, Sharlto also acted in Maleficent - the role of the King (Maleficent's love interest...)
In Elysium, Sharlto actually plays a badder version of Koobus (David James), aka "bald antagonist", "bald, bigger Chris Pine" (lol)
The main character is in Elysium with Matt Damon. Another gritty sci-fi movie that I hope is being recommended and voted on.
I walked into the theatre pretty much blind and it's definitely one of the best movie surprises I've ever had.
The transformation of Wikus was reminiscent of Jeff Goldblum in The Fly.
One of the bleakest, but best indie Sci-Fi films of the last 35 years.
Ex Machina and also won an Oscar for best vfx with just 15 million dollars budget
Realized why I like watching you guys. You remind me of my dad and his friends, feels kinda nostalgic to watch you guys watch TV
I watched this movie when it came out and since then this is still a 5/5 for me. One of my favorite movies out there :D
I love this movie, great reaction, thanks guys! 🙏
This will always be one of my favorite movies.
This is my favourite alien movie! Im so glad you guys are watching it
This is one of those films that you never get tired of watching it over and over again
one of the most underrated movies of all time, they need to make a sequel!
I watched this movie years ago, had no idea what it was about. I ended up crying so much in the end. This is the only movie that REALLY needs a sequel
I remember bringing this movie up to a film professor who had never seen it and accidentally made myself a teacher's pet just for the recommendation. 😂
Amazing film that deserves a sequel.
So glad you guys reacted to this! First watch for me was just completely astounded how dang good it is. Didn’t know what I was getting myself into 😂 Take care guys
As a South African, thank you for checking out this masterpiece! This is my favourite local film.
Chappie and Elysium next?
The Soundtrack is Awesome!
Great movie! I'm happy you've reacted to it. It's a fave.
Hey this is a South African film which I freaking love and as Badd Medicine's resident South African I'm so freaking pumped to see your reactions my dudes!!🔥🔥
Also fyi, this is meant to play into the themes/actual things that happened to people of colour in Apartheid South Africa. Such a great film.
Oh man! I freakin LOVE this movie
The CGI still looks amazing today. Check out some of the behind-the-scenes footage, the aliens were just guys on stilts speaking English. It's pretty funny and amazing to see how well they replaced them.
This was amazing
This movie is absolutely heartbreaking to me. Watched it once and I could never watch it again.
J'adore tellement ce film ! Je suis trop contente que vous le regardiez. La scène où il perd ses dents et ses ongles me donne encore la nausée et des frissons de dégoût des années après. Ce film est si intelligemment fait et dénonce tellement de choses.
i watched this when I was a kid. Watching this back, I would definitely cry if the protagonist have a child. especially a daughter. This need a sequel
Rating of 5..! But maybe I'm biased because I'm South African... but the thing is, this makes me proud it shows that if South Africans work together, we can contribute to the rest of the world. Thank you for taking the time to watch this... Much love, guys ❤
The crazy thing about this movie is that it's a little too real, a little too grounded.
That's one if it's strengths, I believe. It's not easy to do that with sci-fi; it takes a solid script and some next-level acting to pull it off.
Arrival and District 9 are probably my favorite Scy Fy / Alien movies.
I can tell you that seeing this on a huge screen added such impact as to make you truly emotional, almost to the point of crying. You just cant get the same impact from a monitor or TV.
Another movie with the same actor is hardcore Henry. The whole movie is shot in a first person view, very fun.
This movie actually reminds me of that black mirror episode..
The look on the oaks face when the thing went off in the dude head .... epic! 😅
my second favourite movie, the ideas are so original, the aesthetics and the design are just amazing.
such an underrated gem. remember seeing it at the cinemas an was so excited for it, ive always wanted a sequel to this, love sci fi with body horror/transformation an would be so keen to see how it plays out. but also am fine with this being a stand alone, they'd be hard pressed to top it.
26:04 his name is Sharlto Copley hes awesome so underrated, you should watch Elysium with him and Matt Damon, great Sci-Fi grimy futuristic film, and Sharlto plays a scary mercenary.
One of my favorite sci-fi movies! Very underrated and ahead of its time.
One of my global studies professors in uni assigned us this movie, I forgot the exact course name but it was about disenfranchised groups throughout history and how institutions often cripple and ostracize groups that don’t fit within their larger system. You can see how this movie relates!
Dude this is a CLASSIC
Greetings from South Africa.
Great reaction as usual.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻⚡🥃🇿🇦
This is such a good movie. So original. I remember watching it when it came out, and I haven't watched it in years now. Fun to see you react to it!
damn, wasn't expecting a reaction of this. This was my favorite movie for a while from way back when i was still a student :o
Yall gotta watch Elysium with Matt Damon. Sharlto Copley is in it and his character is insane!! Great acting
