"The Song of Wandering Aengus" by William Butler Yeats
I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
    And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
    And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

A vándor Aengus dala (fordította Rácsai Róbert)
    - Fejem lángolt a vad tűzben -
    Vesszőt vágtam s lehántottam,
    Horgomra egy bogyót tűztem.
    Fehér lepkék keltek szárnyra,
    Sok lepke csillag ragyogott,
    Bogyóm, mit patakba dobtam,
    Egy ezüst pisztrángot fogott.
    Amikor a földre tettem,
    És mentem tüzet szítani,
    Valami megzörrent ott lenn,
    S a nevem mondta valaki:
A hal egy fényes lányka lett,
    Hajában egy almavirág,
    A nevem mondta s elszaladt,
    Eltűnt a tiszta légen át.
Bár öreg vagyok, s jártam én
    Kietlen földön, s dombokon,
    De megtudom, hogy merre ment,
    Kézen fogom s megcsókolom.
    Sétálok a tarka füvön,
S míg áll a világ és terem:
    Holdnak ezüst, Napnak arany
    Almáit én mind leszedem.

There's a lot to cry about there in my humble opinion. Sometimes I do when I read it. I turn to this piece of poetry from time to time.

This poem is steeped in Irish mythology.
Every word has meaning that is anchored in Celtic folklore.
The lake, and water is to mirror the life above and afterlife below.
The Trout was a sacred being as it swam within the interface of the living and the dead.
The Celts believed that death came in the form of a beautiful woman.
And for this young angry man his time had not yet come.
He grows old and yearns to take her hand.
I would recite this poem, back in 83, for my intercert examination at 16 in Ireland ,when fishing with my young brother.
In grandads boat on the lakes of Killarney.
In 2018 he was stabbed in the chest by a thug in London, and bled to death in my arms.
His last words being for his wife and child.
I wonder often did that young girl come at that moment.
To kiss his lips and take his hand.

Very lovely. I took Irish Folklore in college and wished I'd had these videos to share then, but I'm glad you know the Celtic origin behind the poem.

    Beautifully done.
It seems as if in order to capture the truth of this poem,a certain humility is required..Sam has that and it is a good fit.
This poem was my Uncles legacy..he was an Artist.Sometimes when he had had a taste of whiskey and i was not available,he would leave his reading of this on my phone. He's gone now but i still have the recording. He was a man of the fly and trout too and most essentially an Artists sensibility in his marrow.
The last 2 years of his life he became very difficult and i didnt see him as much as i should have..i should have been able to see beneath all the encrustation and crud that makes up the sometimes bitterness that attends to old age..after all,he had given me my depth. Now that he is 5 years gone, all the fine and good and rich times we shared, have returned and i can see him again as he really was..the man,to me at least, that seemed to embody the old man in the poem.

Thank You Sam...When you think about it..we don't see or hear poetry on tv or radio much in general.
I love all the old Australians poems and stories as well. Hope they teach the kids in the schools poetry.
    So edifying.

I first heard of it when I saw an "Enterprise" episode called 'Rogue Planet'. Cpt. Archer remembered the poem his mother read to him when he and his crewmembers visited a Rogue Planet and a chameleon woman in white was asking for his help because she was being hunted by the alien hunters who visited the planet for sport. Archer and his crew defeated the hunter's attempts to capture her and she returned to her natural self. In addition to William Butler Yeats, I've learnt quite a bit of poetry in these videos on You Tube. Another has Robert Burn's " When I Am Old", a T'Pol video from "E²".
