@@mercster It doesnt have to look like modern mmos.. even in the end of 90s and early 2000s, UIs were more or less similar what they are to this day... UO has absolutely bad ui design, even for that Era. Im surprised modern gamer communities who keep old games allive, mod them etc... not just band together to remkae the engine and proper ui.. just use the original assets and sharper shaders etc to enhance... old games werent exactly mechanically complex , it takes less time to rewrite the engine as opensource, than modding the original mess.. even if u mod the original srrc code.. u could still make more plausible UI.. well there was some mods for outlands, could make macros for bandage and stuff... the game felt a bit too booring for me, i made that melee dps class with shield mace.. just feels dull.. u literally have no spells to cast, skills to use... makes games like this incredib ly dull and booring. i like isometric "golden era" graphics tho. That was several yhears ago, i need to take a second look... i think i quietd fast, because im m,ore solo player.. no friends play this kind of stuff.. i felt lost.. content was pretty hard as well.. when u get insta ganked everytime i step out of noob island. @@Microphunktv-jb3kj I didn't say "look" I said "work"... its entire skill/combat/etc structures work entirely differently to modern MMOs. And... the UO Outlands client comes with a "mod" (or rather, an external tool) called "Razor" that lets you set up all the macros and things. You may think that was included in the original game, but it's not... that's your "modding tool" essentially. But yeah, I don't mean to talk you into liking it, if you have no nostalgia for the original game, modern gamers won't understand the charm. There's an internal logic and rhythm to it, but in the end, it remains in an earlier time...
@@Microphunktv-jb3kj What is so difficult about looting? It's literally 1 click per item and it's in your inventory if you're using grid loot. Please elaborate.
Player housing was/is one of the things they did wrong, imo. They needed to limit housing to 1 per account and set limits on where they could be placed. Britannia turned from a fun place to roam and explore and hunt, to a giant world of houses and the only place to go were dungeons.
@@pauld6222 The world map wouldd have to be just bigger, in modeern setting u would not be able to make housing like that... werll u can actually, u would hajve to make the game play out .. something like rtunescape... where there are small servers, where you can hop in and out with ur character... then houses almost anywhere would make the worlds / servers lively somehow , ive always liked those stationary character shops :DDD but they usually become botfests because of that....
@@Microphunktv-jb3kj Instanced house area. They had the technology. I guarantee you they did not foresee the land getting overrun by houses the way it did. I mean, if someone enjoys a huge area filled with houses, there are great games like the Sims, or Sim city to play. The only thing that saved it from becoming an issue was other than mining and maybe a skill like taming, everything was in the dungeons. The only thing that made me hang around until EQ beta came out was I learned hose to break into any house I could see from my ship. I spent a few months robbing everyone's treasures then let it all rot with my keep when i left. I guarantee you someone got a fortune worth the items when my keep did collapse, hahaha.
Why in the hell we don’t have a updated UO by now is beyond me. Same game , updated visuals , modern - ish UI ….. I can’t see how that wouldn’t be worth it for them.
EA bought Origin a long time ago and their bean counters trashed the game development. UO almost did not happen because of these people who mismanage everything and say they cannot prove anything is profitable. UO was pretty much funded by the sale of beta CDs much like shareware. Same reason ultima 8 and 9 look like beta junk. These games are all extremely lucky to get funding, find developers with the passion, and not have bean counters interfering.
It doesn't have to be the same IP. Just a game that does all the same things but does them a little better because of lessons learned, looks better, etc.
@@TrunkMonkey42 EA bought OriginYears before UO even came out. If it wasn’t for EA money UO wouldn’t exsist. Ya they messed the game up but it would have never existed if Garriot hadn’t sold Origin to them
I played. I was Snow White on Atlantic Shard for 12+ years until WOW came out and I started Teaching again. I stood by the Bank and dyed clothes and rode my white magic Unicorn around the forest Resurrecting & Healing players and collecting regents for elixirs. I had a Castle & Keep and was a Legendary Player and had an Internet Page to my character as one of the most epic characters of all time on UO. Ever-
Ah this brings back memories. I used to watch my friend play this game, it was such an amazing concept for its time! I remember watching GMs help stuck players by moving around the games textures in real time 😲
Skill category based progression is so, so much more fun than fucking levels. There's only been a few games that went this route and they were all fantastic
Lmao music... just watched some review when old player sayd how shit the music and sounds actually is... that even nostalgia couldnt save some bad aspects of clunkiness.... if u have custom game, why dont u replace the sounds with modern ones... im not alking about music ... but the repetitive sound effects....
When I see someone running in the overworld without a mount, I immediately assume they're new so I go talk to them to give them some tips, potions and a helping hand... instead of snooping their pack and stealing from them like I usually would a random :)
i was totally hooked back then. its a fascinating game and i still have not forgotten it. i experienced so much in that game that i can still remember quite a few moments like it was yesterday.
I have just got back into Ultima online, I would love to go move over to Outlands but I have years invested into my toon on official, there is definitely a lot of people still playing for UO as housing on my shard is still hard to come by
Definitely nailed this review. This is what UO always should have been. Ofc its super clunky and hardcore as well (especially open FFA PVP as soon as you're out of the town/newbie island). Although they JUST added the rotating weekly Sanctuary dungeon (no thief/PK but 50% less loot/XP), great place to get started after the newbie island. However having played a lot of MMOs over time, nothing compares to the adrenaline rush of Ultima Online. Never knowing what's going to happen in a dungeon because of other players. Friends, foes, etc. Definitely not for everyone, but nothing quite like it either!
Thank you for reviewing this :) As a long time player, I have to say you are right on the grind, starting on the server can take a while (arguably it has been worse). That being said, you can find a guild very easily here, and a few are focused on helping new players. It's a massive boost. I think if you joined a guild and put a bit more time in, you would have a different outlook.
UO Outlands is a peculiar game that left me with a rollercoaster of emotions. At times, it offered the promise of fun and adventure, but too often, the player community on both red and blue sides soured the experience to the point where I'd rather entertain myself with a hammer and smash my own fingers. Reds will be Reds but to have Blues also see an opertunity to get you they will too. Let's start with the positives. UO Outlands has the potential to be an enjoyable experience. It captures the essence of classic Ultima Online with a vibrant, open world teeming with opportunities for exploration, crafting, and player interactions. The nostalgia factor is strong, and for those who have fond memories of the original Ultima Online, this shard provides a familiar yet fresh take on the game. However, the major downside to UO Outlands is its player community. The Red and Blue factions often create an environment that's more frustating than it is enjoyable. Griefing, killing just beacuse they can, and a general lack of sportsmanship seem to be the norm rather than the exception. Instead of fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and competition, it often feels like a battleground of frustration. One of the most disheartening aspects is the prevalence of what seems like a "pay-to-win" mentality among players. Many seem more interested in avoiding confrontation with well-geared opponents than engaging in fair fights. This results in an ecosystem where the less equipped players are the easiest targets, which suggests a lack of skill on the part of many participants. It's frustrating to see a potentially rich PvP experience reduced to a game of avoiding real challenges. However, it's important to note that not all players fit this mold. UO Outlands does have a dedicated community of skilled and honorable players who genuinely contribute to the game's overall appeal. Unfortunately, they seem to be overshadowed by those who prioritize easy victories over fair competition. In conclusion, UO Outlands has the potential to be a fun and nostalgic gaming experience, but the enjoyment factor is severely compromised by a portion of the player base that often prioritizes toxic behavior and "play-to-win" tactics. If you're considering giving it a try, be prepared for a mixed bag of emotions, as your enjoyment will largely depend on the encounters you have with other players. Remember, this is just one person's opinion, and your experience may vary.
A modern rendition on this game would be incredible and probably very popular at least at launch. There are not enough MMOs, difficult or otherwise, that allow totally free build diversity. On the top of my head Albion, and Runescape are the closest to this idea in its purest form. I do not understand the seemingly mandatory design principles behind rigid design that requires numerous alt accounts to experience different facets of an MMO. Well I do understand pushing people to play longer hours by making alts mandatory, or even selling a solution to the problem of not having enough alt slots available to you. There are so many great ideas behind older MMOs that deserve to be iterated on, I'm not even worried about the often nebulous idea of them being "too easy" like some people bang on about, but what worries me the most is how a new MMO will be monetized and who publishes it.
albion felt too arcade'i to me. and too much emphasis on "moba combat" its not bad actually.. i have just the problem with graphics wich is clearly dsigned for mobile... i would rather play something wich has like.. uo,homm3, rs3 like graphics.. u know that classic golden age of pixel graphics... modern pixel graphics just too low poly for my taste....
@@Microphunktv-jb3kj I feel quite the opposite about the modern art styles in games, generally because it is exactly that. It's just a choice. The "skin" for one game isn't really better or worse than another game unless they are competing for who can do hyper realism the best, and so far by that particular metric any game coming out five years from now will do it better than a game that came out today. With Albion the art style doesn't strike me as being "for mobile" in the same way as the incredibly lack luster number of abilities you get. You're spot on that does make it feel very MOBA like but for an entirely different reason. It's generally not what I want out of MMO combat, but I play it for the great build diversity and social aspect.
El mejor juego del mundo. Escucho su música del Classic UO y prácticamente se me cae una lagrima recordando esos buenos momentos. Saludos desde Argentina.
Not being a PvP fan I don't know that I could enjoy this but it seems an impressive achievement nonetheless in the game itself, especially in the creation of an entirely new world to go along with. Such efforts are a service to the MMORPG community at large and especially those that have been able to find refuge there.
I played the original UO for three years and hardly ever pvpd. That doesnt mean i wouldnt because you had to be able to defend yourself, atleast long enough to escape. Theres so many ways to play this game that have nothing to do with pvp. Thats the only complaint i have had with free shards ive tried to play since the original, theres not many people playing so you kinda only got pvp, the towns wouldnt be busy, you wouldnt have the people that were just mining or just role playing or treasure hunting or just hanging out meeting people. Some of the funnest times were going to a house that was falling and just hanging out watching all the chaos that would be going on, or going to the bone knight room and grinding your wrestling/swords/macing while talking shit and then scattering when a pk group would come through. Or running through the woods for an extra 5 minutes to get to the goblin camp so you dont get pkd at the x roads on the way there. As good as a server is, it needs a strong player base to really get UO to be right
I will give it a try since i never played it. Ultima Online wasn't popular in Poland, but it seems pretty close to Tibia. Classic MMORPG for most kids from Poland in 90s and 00s internet cafe times
Most kids today stay away from games that have outdated graphics or that are 'too complex' as my own son has told me. This is a problem for games today in general. I feel a lot of the newer games are 'dumbed down' , on easy mode. Basically, they have taken the real challenge out of them.
I tried playing this and found myself wandering and confused. Did I miss a tutorial or something? I have no idea what to do or even how to play beyond walking and clicking on things and it was just sheer information overload.
There's more tooltips in UO outlands than the live UO so it's a bit more user-friendly but there's definitely some stuff you just have to learn either by watching guides like those from Pwnstar or going over to their Wiki: uooutlands.com/wiki/Main_Page
Great video, even greater game. Can anyone tell me what might be the piano song that plays for around 5 seconds starting at 10:14 ? I recognize it but i cant come up with the name. Thank you!
Thank you! As for the song it's just titled "Sad" it's from Envato Elements (Audiojungle) which is a repository where you pay for licensing for music. It's probably taking influence from some other classical music though.
Ultima Online was the beginning of the gaming world today. I loved this game when it came out I played for years and sold my Greatlakes castle for 1000 dollars and my towers for 700 dollars it was awesome! I worked the auction house weekley. I never had a keep darn. Good old days. SWG was fun too. I guess Im old. LOL
They had another expansion for anyone wanting to know. Just figured id shout that out! Its best just to play I wouldn't watch any videos on tutorials or anything personally. To much of a mess and confusing if your new that is. Maybe later! This video has a great explanation on the game.
Outlands got a mention in a recent video of mine because of the new expansion because of thought it was so cool they did that. Actually releasing it as an expansion with hype and everything!
Finally. Watching now. My way of describing UO Outlands is: Outlands is what OSI would have made if they had any idea how MMOs were going to be played over the next 25 years. Edit: git gud casul.
best game ever! props to Outlands for renewing this classic and perhaps original mmo There's so much to do and explore. You can have a boat and sail the seas you can be a treasure hunter or a carpenter a fisherman a blacksmith a scribe the list goes on. A very detailed world with just about everything in it that the real world has. I mean you have forks and spoons and plates and cups you can make them yourself or go out to shops and purchase them, you can build a house chop wood camp. I don't know of any game that even comes close. Maybe there are some out there but to me this game just hits the top of the rpg list especially how Outlands has approached there expansions with such creativity and artful care towards detail. Its truly a work of art and a joy to play
It is the best shard I know. Many players are online, and you don't feel like you're alone. There are numerous encounters and interactions with others. What also appeals to me is that you don't acquire gold quickly; instead, you have to work for it. :D I would say, on average, there are about 2500 players online (depending on the time). It's a lot of fun.
Seems to have a great community, but scripts are rampant. From what i was able to see when i was looking into it, the scripts kind of play the game for you. I missed UO but started Everquest on launch.
Broadsword Games (under EA) still runs Ultima Online and I think it went free to play with an optional sub a while back. The "New Dawn" server has been in the works for a few years now but if you ever wanted to try out UO there's another option.
What would I do if I could go back to 97? The same thing....Play UO! I joined about a month after launch and it was so fun! I do occasionally play on another emulator server but use Orion instead of Razor. I found Orion to be more helpful for what I need as fast as all the macros and scripts to handle all those tasks like looting, opening doors, raising skills that make you click things, etc. The server I play on is no pvp, and some nice QoL features. However, Outlands is the current king of UO emulators by far. I considered playing there too, but as you said, most people playing there have been playing forever and know their shit. While I enjoy pvp here and there, Id like have the option when I want to do it ,instead of getting randomly killed by veterans who know every little trick and tactic about pvp in UO. Its similar to going out to unsecure space in Eve Online as a new player. You are assured you will lose everything. I do watch Pwnstarr85's videos/stream once in a while too. I'll leave the pvping up to him =)
They just added a new feature for this; every week, a dungeon is selected as Sanctuary (no thief/PK, but half gold/XP) for those who want to learn the dungeon or just want a reprieve from open FFA PVP/thieves.
Man, I was around for this time, but never played UO. I tried Outlands, and I'm not stranger to retro MMO's, but I could NOT figure anything out enough to do ANYTHING in this game. I couldn't see people's names, I couldn't find the hotbar for Skills, Magic made no sense and did nothing (which caused a deer to almost kill me), I couldn't figure out how to equip the dagger i started with, and I couldn't even figure out how to read descriptions about items. At one point, I accidentally used a bunch of one-time shards that seemed to increase my stats to 20+, which made no sense, because I was supposed to start with 60 Int. Nothing in Outlands made sense. Edit: I did eventually figure out the hotbars, apparently you have to MAKE them yourself, which is never explained. Even then, magic was really clunky, and I couldn't seem to figure out what all my stats were, since it never displayed any numbers, and the chat was dominated by random nonsense of skills leveling, preventing me from seeing anything else. Overall, just a clunky experience that I cannot recommend.
Hey Beard! I've also played UO when it came out and can't shake the desire to relive those times. Do you think a high FPS low-poly remake with some more modern gameplay changes could be a success? If you created this game today, what would you change?
If you're dexxing, play manobrating around your enemies: being stationary only makes you hit less and take more damage. Being always moving makes it A LOT harder for the npcs to effectivelly damage you, giving more survivability.
Is this game PvE? Been meaning to get into UO but i didnt want to get into PvP since it is a nuisace. Also which one would you recommend to a newbie? UO Outlanda or UO Alive?
I really really wanted to like Outlands, but at some point i just threw my hands up and thought to myself "sometimes less us more." There is so much going on in Outlands its a bit overwhelming. I get they wanted to really expand on virtually everything in UO but that leaves very little of anything familiar to come back to. The whole thing just felt too foreign for me. Back to my lonely 3 person UO server I go.
I find out lands is victim of its own success the admins are really doing the best they can with so many players its total shit show. This housing expac wildlands was epic fuked kids are selling 8x8 for 50m gold. 30 people were standing around to place in the same spot 1 sec after land was opened up after 30 day lottery ,, its nice to have alot players and then its also not.
Been playing for about 2 weeks now 7x gm, 2 codex with 2t5 and t6 aspect. Even when you leave the newbie dungeon you will be ill prepared even to just walk around and explore even at gm combat, healing and anat a single spider while give you a dirt nap.
Ultima Online was my first MMO ever. It was absolutely incredible just being able to play something online. Sadly I wasn't aware of the Ultima series before that so I didn't get to play any of them.
I was playing UO games on the good old Commodore 64. I may be wrong, but I dont think it came out on NES for several years after the PC, but bet the NES version looked and played identical if I had to guess.
I played uo back in the days before trammel.. i played one of those annoying thieves :P. Annoying people in dungeons sneaking away .. and when i was bored annoy people at the bank :) so mutch fun that was :D Ive met some nice fellow thieves when i played it and befrienden over the years after.. good times :D .. oh yeah and laying down a cable modem upstairs and dial in to play .. having over 100 Dutch guldens as bills end of the month .. good times :P
This server is a much better take on UO than the retail versions. The client is massively improved from the stuttering mess the force you to use on EA.
I'm glad so many fans of the server convinced me to try Outlands over the current live version. While I have much established players on the live version from over a decade ago I had more fun on Outlands.
97 lol... probably I would smoke a lots of pot with my super underground band which nobody cares about except us and wouldn't give a damn about video games :D
UO Outlands sounds like the MMO for me but I just can't deal with the UI and having to manually set up macros and scripts. It's a bit too much for me, if only they would set up some premade settings, macros and scripts to "mordernise" the game as the default install.
a thing to note.. that kind of makes this a unique niche. this isnt for a lot of old UO players looking for the nostalgia. It is for past UO players who are looking to RP and specific thing. The thing these old UO players are looking to RP. Is RPing someone who is a good PvPer. Who is an online digital elite badass. Which is kind of unique because usually people are looking to RP their ingame character. not RP a type of RL person. How did this happen? pre year 2000 when UO was being played by a lot of people, what happened was: Some people started getting high speed internets and good computers. Which gave them a MASSIVE advantage of the average person playing on their dial up telephone lines. Then in addition the more serious players got their hands on MACRO programs. With these added features these players were able to player kill other players a lot. Usually using a specific template called the "tank mage".. which was basically a combo of 7 specific skills that had to be leveled/macrod up. Over time eventually things started to level out as more and more people got cable/DSL internet connections and better computers. Also of course balance changes, changed which classes were popular.. etc BUT during that time period a decent amount of these more serious players with their macros and high speed internet got the feeling that they were online PvP badasses. Destroying everyone, getting rich, getting accepted into social group guilds of other "badass PvPers". As the game moved on in patches and people moved to other games... a lot of these people learned they were not super PvPers. But they had the nostalgia of heydays in late 90s UO. They recreated UO were the tank mage template dominated all.. But what happened is the players no longer felt elite, because they had no easy prey to hunt/PvP. So the balance has been to add a bunch of PvE content... non PvP content for people. Art, monster fighting variety.. etc etc. BUT then make the specific tank mage the only real viable PvP template.. while making all the monster fighting/exploring skills get disabled in PvP. NOW these old players with decades of macro program and in game experience on how to PvP with the tank mage can feel elite, by beating up all these other players in PvP. and thus get to RP the feeling of being an elite PvPer.
i tried it after your video . its like you said but there wasnt any friendly players like you said. they hardly even talk to you. they seemed very annoyed when you ask them a question. discord is no better same feeling there. ive been on there 5 days now , at first me and a few new players helped each other but once i made it out in the real world good luck trying to adventuring i cant count the amount of times ive been killed by the red players. its not even worth trying to go anywhere because you get jumped and robbed. i love the customization very cool but the over all community sucks not helpful. im a long time UO player. pros is the new feel with all the customizations very cool - cons no help or anyone to ask questions amd community very cold.

"Not the nostalgia you're looking for" Not sure what to make of this negative... I mean, I know it's cool for kids these days to say they have nostalgia for things they never experienced, but... that's impossible. That may be longing or something, but it's not nostalgia. Can't have nostalgia for something you didn't experience. So in this case... yes, it is exactly the nostalgia anyone playing this game is looking for, if they played Ultima Online. :-) Better stated: "This is not the outlet for your desire to LARP for ye oldene dayse that you never experienced you're looking for."
I tried it, it seems like some fun but it’s a ton of work to start over it’s like learning a new game and I have a hard time trying to invest the time in the game, and nothing beats the OG client I just wish they would invest in the OG client a bit more fix the economy and make It more fun somehow
Just one piece of advice to anyone going to play here …. this is HARDCORE pvp lol. ANY time you see another player he is trying to kill you and steal your stuff. You have been warned
Fans of this game really should try Mortal Online 2, the game has a bad rep but i'm enjoying it a lot, it's pretty much a modern Ultima Online on unreal 5 engine.
I enjoyed my time in outlands...it was AWESOME...but it just feels sooo old. I'm not even talking about graphics but just "ease of gameplay". Its janky, and its VERY time consuming. I ended up over in Albion Online. I enjoy the quicker/simpler lifestyle as I just dont have the time I used too in life. Outlands would be my choice if I was'nt playing Albion Online now though.
This for sure. I'm interested in testing out Fractured Online again to see how they have managed to turn things around since moving away from their publisher.
Just watched a video of yours and left a comment saying outlands. You have a video on it LOL. How about that! This is the best place to go for UO hands-down. I been around for along TIME. Its not PAY to win or nothing like that. All cosmetic stuff if u wanna look fancy. Totally Free! But its not the old world map!? who cares its better than the old world map trust me. I still play it to this day also, the original map on Forever. But it don't hold nothing to outlands content. But yeah if you use the BAD client, your game will not be good. The new client is way better, I am running at 240 FPS. Which don't matter really, macro's aren't new. But might be to many other people cause they ain't played old games that required em. Pretty simple to setup, any macro / Hotkey.
@@Redbeardflynn Right on man!! I just really love the game in general. I aint active as i used to be. Had many issues to where i couldn't play anything. At least you tried outlands! Your right tho in the video its a TIME consuming game. You wont be good right away or nothing. Its a beast.
Ayyyy, this game is really IT. The devs have us SPOILED. All that game FOR FREE.....I give them money because it is so good, not because I have to. Subbed because you gave a shoutout to the best in the Outlands business...the Outlands pirate himself! Pwnstarrrrrrrrrrrr Gaming! lol If you're curious, wondering, or just confused....this game is 100% legit. It is SO GOOD. You'll enjoy it 100%...or your money back HAHAHA.
I remember it being both cool and devastating back in the late 90s but when I moved over to EQ even corpse runs felt like an improvement just because it wasn't a race to find a rez before your corpse opened up and people could loot without turning grey.
While I liked the other UO video from the official servers, this one was somehow "Talked a lot, but actually said very little." I listened for 15 minutes but still have no real clue what to expect from this game/server.
pvp, completely custom world from npcs to the actual map, quality of life improvements. I believe I hit all of those in the video but thanks for the feedback.
Honestly going to have to say a lot of those cons are an L take. It sounds like to me that you didn't look into the interface options. For example looting, there is a new style and an old option, you can use both at the same time. As for this just being for old UO Players... that's an L take too. I've met plenty of people who've never played UO in the past. In fact I'd say a lot of what it does makes this more of a UO 2 than a 1.25 or 1.5. All of the systems they have in place are incredible, I'm sure you would have experienced them if you played for more than 15 hours. Play the game for 100 hours, then tell me if you still think this way.
I tried it but their macro/antimacro measures got me suspended in the first hour. their anti macro popup kept blocking me from turning off my mining macro so I was helpless until I got kicked off. no interest after something so basic ruined it for me.
You really only scratched the surface, outlands has a lot more advancement systems, Mastery Chains, Aspect Mastery, Weapon Codexes, Crafting Societies these are all advancement systems far far beyond maxing 700 skill points. You can play for years without maxing out your mastery chain. You can do crafting Societies and never step foot in dungeon and still have millions of gold and a nice house. I would suggest everyone hit test server and try out the mind boggling amount of customization you can do. I play backstab stealth rouge that comes out shadows shooting a heavy xbow for 2000+ damage per hit....

I liked those skeleton killing in cemetery tho, where in some tunnel, Lich was throwing lightning bolts :D atleast it felt good, when some mob can kill you... unlike in modern mmos.. they dont feel anymore games even, when everyone is so watered down and dumbed down in terms of difficulty... everyone can feel it how dumbed down modern mmos are.
too much handholding. well there's Albion online, but it feels too arcade'i and cartoony to me... game like ultima online, if slightly more modern ux/ui game but similar classic looking isometric graphics would def have a shot at the gaming market being popular enough game.
i learned to code to make a game, but i soon reliezed making a game is years of effort solo... so i quit trying quickly.. and become standard developer in corporate ; )
Please elaborate.
been playing outlands for just over a month now and having fun. I like it.
UO was soo good back in the day, before EQ. It still has killer features that modern MMOs somehow get wrong. Player housing is a huge example.
Player housing was/is one of the things they did wrong, imo. They needed to limit housing to 1 per account and set limits on where they could be placed. Britannia turned from a fun place to roam and explore and hunt, to a giant world of houses and the only place to go were dungeons.
@@pauld6222 agree to disagree!
@@pauld6222 The world map wouldd have to be just bigger, in modeern setting u would not be able to make housing like that...
werll u can actually, u would hajve to make the game play out .. something like rtunescape... where there are small servers, where you can hop in and out with ur character...
then houses almost anywhere would make the worlds / servers lively somehow ,
ive always liked those stationary character shops :DDD but they usually become botfests because of that....
@@pauld6222 the official game is 1 per account.
Legends of ultimate community server... exactly what you are looking for
its EA
@@TrunkMonkey42 EA bought OriginYears before UO even came out. If it wasn’t for EA money UO wouldn’t exsist. Ya they messed the game up but it would have never existed if Garriot hadn’t sold Origin to them
Glad to see coverage of Outlands! It's a fun server. 💖
Ever-
bad ass...i sold ridiculously colored clothes to new players for fun lol...made great conversations with people fishing...good times
I was Igu on the Atlantic Shard also. for 10+ years.
Hearing Create/Stones music was enough to take me back to when this was fresh and new game. Never gets old...
Ah this brings back memories. I used to watch my friend play this game, it was such an amazing concept for its time! I remember watching GMs help stuck players by moving around the games textures in real time 😲
Skill category based progression is so, so much more fun than fucking levels. There's only been a few games that went this route and they were all fantastic
never was able to find another MMO that did this. I always think of UO being the only one.
Yeah tbh... outlands is just SO good. All the custom stuff is nice but really, the community there is what drives its success for sure.
uh …. every asshole on the planet plays there lol. Walk up to someone and say hi and they’re gonna kill you and steal your shit hehe
Loved so many aspects of UO, especially the music
Stones still gets me every time I hear it.
I always loved the sounds of the undead from the skeletons to lich lords, and the sound of a weapon hitting something.
UO and DAoC are far and away the best games I’ve ever played. Such great memories from both.
i was totally hooked back then. its a fascinating game and i still have not forgotten it. i experienced so much in that game that i can still remember quite a few moments like it was yesterday.
Wow. Made my hair stand up watching the old UO. Amazing game and I was still in school
Your cons are some of my favorite features
The music… brings me right back!!! Loved this game so much
Right? It's like a core memory
Fair summary. Thanks for this. Outlands is fantastic. Hope to see you around.
There are so many great ideas behind older MMOs that deserve to be iterated on, I'm not even worried about the often nebulous idea of them being "too easy" like some people bang on about, but what worries me the most is how a new MMO will be monetized and who publishes it.
albion felt too arcade'i to me. and too much emphasis on "moba combat"
its not bad actually.. i have just the problem with graphics wich is clearly dsigned for mobile...
i would rather play something wich has like..
uo,homm3, rs3 like graphics.. u know that classic golden age of pixel graphics...
modern pixel graphics just too low poly for my taste....
Juga a este shard y no lo dejas mas.. es muy adictivo
Man, nostalgia city. I loved the original and I remember being in Walmart, gazing at the box and begging my dad for it everytime we went.
Not being a PvP fan I don't know that I could enjoy this but it seems an impressive achievement nonetheless in the game itself, especially in the creation of an entirely new world to go along with. Such efforts are a service to the MMORPG community at large and especially those that have been able to find refuge there.
They have places where you can avoid being pkd
That's interesting. I remember hearing of Tibia but don't remember it being super popular where I lived. Thanks for sharing!
@@Redbeardflynn Yeah, Tibia is popular only in few countries. Most players are from Poland, Brazil or Germany
I agree On the t-Shirt I plan on ordering the hoodie as soon as I can.
Where can you get the shirt and hoodie?
LOL
I think I was playing Magestorm and Legends of Kesmai in 1997. Oh, on the Gamestom service.
Ok..I'll ask...where can you get that shirt?
I believe it's from hot topic. They cycle through lp shirts.
They had another expansion for anyone wanting to know. Just figured id shout that out! Its best just to play
I wouldn't watch any videos on tutorials or anything personally. To much of a mess and confusing if your new that is. Maybe later! This video has a great explanation on the game.
Outlands got a mention in a recent video of mine because of the new expansion because of thought it was so cool they did that. Actually releasing it as an expansion with hype and everything!

Where did you get your ghost shirt?
Pre t2a UO vet, I'm downloading this now. I loved my halberd pvp tankmage, and I see its still an option, omg!
my first game ever was uo when we had ICQ to communicate :) haha . man best game ever . and im talking about UO not UOO :)
whats the song at 14:32 ?
Back in time to 1997, mmh well, I would buy some Magic the Gathering cards I guess 😛
I miss the era, I miss Ultima Online. Nice review btw.
Are u & Pwnstar brothers???
Seems to have a great community, but scripts are rampant. From what i was able to see when i was looking into it, the scripts kind of play the game for you. I missed UO but started Everquest on launch.
Broadsword Games (under EA) still runs Ultima Online and I think it went free to play with an optional sub a while back. The "New Dawn" server has been in the works for a few years now but if you ever wanted to try out UO there's another option.
Imagine this game getting a remake
What would that look like do you think?
Legends of Aria and Shroud of the Avatar were both made by ex devs and both games were failures for various reasons..
@@Eyrothath i was so looking to legends of aria... i dont get why it died...
outlands is almost like a remake... just jump in and give it a try. amazing been here year and half now!
It's interesting, I played tibia, never even tried altima. And this year I started playing astonia 3 again
Hey Beard! I've also played UO when it came out and can't shake the desire to relive those times.
Do you think a high FPS low-poly remake with some more modern gameplay changes could be a success?
If you created this game today, what would you change?
Been playing UO since Renaissance
If you're dexxing, play manobrating around your enemies: being stationary only makes you hit less and take more damage. Being always moving makes it A LOT harder for the npcs to effectivelly damage you, giving more survivability.
What is manobrating and why will you hit more if you're moving?
I have parrying Codex W/ Bulwark and it pays to sit still unless I go Warding due to bleed or wtv. What is Manobrating?????????????????????
Is this game PvE? Been meaning to get into UO but i didnt want to get into PvP since it is a nuisace. Also which one would you recommend to a newbie? UO Outlanda or UO Alive?
Is it possible to play outlands from SEA region? I live in vietnam and worry about the high ping/ lag..
Unfortunately ive neebr played Ultima online. But i did have Ultima exodus on the NES and that game hardcore and amazing
I liked LoU, UO with new paint really. It was buikd in another game using unty. It is, well not really dead I guess, but on life support.
If they can make a client up to mondains legacy and have it just like the OG servers so I’m not so confused it would be awesome like a whole reset
Any quests?
This server is a much better take on UO than the retail versions.
The client is massively improved from the stuttering mess the force you to use on EA.
I'm glad so many fans of the server convinced me to try Outlands over the current live version. While I have much established players on the live version from over a decade ago I had more fun on Outlands.
Is this the original RuneScape??
97 lol... probably I would smoke a lots of pot with my super underground band which nobody cares about except us and wouldn't give a damn about video games :D
Also of course balance changes, changed which classes were popular.. etc
BUT during that time period a decent amount of these more serious players with their macros and high speed internet got the feeling that they were online PvP badasses.
I want Ultima Online in VR
i tried it after your video . its like you said but there wasnt any friendly players like you said. they hardly even talk to you. they seemed very annoyed when you ask them a question. discord is no better same feeling there. ive been on there 5 days now , at first me and a few new players helped each other but once i made it out in the real world good luck trying to adventuring i cant count the amount of times ive been killed by the red players. its not even worth trying to go anywhere because you get jumped and robbed. i love the customization very cool but the over all community sucks not helpful. im a long time UO player. pros is the new feel with all the customizations very cool - cons no help or anyone to ask questions amd community very cold.
That music ❤❤❤
1997? I had just turned 20 and had my whole life ahead of me, I was doing great. Ask me about 2000.
Outlands is good stuff tho, congrats to that team.
You said it uses the "Classic UO" client... which is technically true, but that may have led people to believe it uses the client UO proper uses. "Classic UO" is a open source project that re-implements the client using modern technologies, and is VERY different from, well... the "classic" "UO client."

Found it too hard to get started, resources cost way too much and the systems are really confusing
There's no customizable housing afaik and that's a huge turn off for me.
If I could go back to 97’ mmo’s would be second or third on the list of things I would do …. If ya know what I mean.
It’s 60FPS with ClassicUO client ..spot on tho. Not for Gen Z kids..too soft. No hand holding
I tried it, it seems like some fun but it’s a ton of work to start over it’s like learning a new game and I have a hard time trying to invest the time in the game, and nothing beats the OG client I just wish they would invest in the OG client a bit more fix the economy and make It more fun somehow
community is great but the server systems are too complicated and it is really hard to play the game after shelter island.
Repetitive sounds that you have mentioned are white noise for us to sleep better :D

Nice video, there is no beyond ultima online!
Haha! Imagine that
@@Redbeardflynn Right on man!!
Pwnstarrrrrrrrrrrr Gaming! lol
If you're curious, wondering, or just confused....this game is 100% legit. It is SO GOOD. You'll enjoy it 100%...or your money back HAHAHA.
All the negatives listed are positives for me.
Anyone that is a former VET will likely disagree with all the negatives listed.
peronally i never liked the death mechanics. being a ghost and be forced to go back to ress always felt extremely clunky.
I remember it being both cool and devastating back in the late 90s but when I moved over to EQ even corpse runs felt like an improvement just because it wasn't a race to find a rez before your corpse opened up and people could loot without turning grey.
While I liked the other UO video from the official servers, this one was somehow "Talked a lot, but actually said very little."
I listened for 15 minutes but still have no real clue what to expect from this game/server.
pvp, completely custom world from npcs to the actual map, quality of life improvements. I believe I hit all of those in the video but thanks for the feedback.
Play Outlands!
Playing UO, just like i did back then😂
I tried it but their macro/antimacro measures got me suspended in the first hour. their anti macro popup kept blocking me from turning off my mining macro so I was helpless until I got kicked off. no interest after something so basic ruined it for me.
Dark Soul here if anyone remembers 😅
Unfortunately the spirit of Ultima Online is lost when it comes to Outlands, Its a whole new game created using UO..
