Haha, just revisited this 4 years later (and 6 years after publishing) - still a good explanation! But makes it also funnily obvious how much more comfortable you are in front of the camera now and how much you’ve grown as a “public” speaker. Congrats!
I like that this video provides a clear guideline for how many reps and distance to go in which I couldn’t find in most of the video I’ve seen. Thanks a lot.
Just found these vids. Just getting back to running. Did a terrible 22km on Sunday. Found the vid about warm up, did that before a 4km run, the next day. Really opened me up, and found that I was powering home. Going to do these exercises. I’m 57 and don’t run like I used to, but I’m a lot wiser now… running lots of Kms won’t do the job anymore.
Thank you so much for sharing. It is so helpful for a beginner like me who knows very little about running. By the way, your to-the-point and no-nonsense video style is clean, clear and concise. Well done!
This is great and very helpful. I'd also love to see a 5 to 10 minute follow-along pre-run warmup video from you that I can do indoors before my runs. Think about it. Thanks. You seem like a real nice person. 👍
I’ve just caught up with this great video, thanks Ben for such clear explanations. I had a real light bulb moment on the high knees drill when you suggested concentrating on driving the foot down rather than knee drive on the way up. I used that as a cue on my 11 mile run tonight and I could feel the glutes etc engaging, and pushing me forward more and my core seemed more engaged too, felt great!! I’ll be building these drills into my running a couple of times a week.
Superb content/advice as always. Although a little worried that people may think I’m losing my marbles when I’m doing them (especially the straight leg run) 😂
Love this video because it explains the reasoning behind each drill. You have a new fan! And a new subscriber. And I found you on strava as well ... :) cheers from a Spaniard in the US ( Philadelphia) who is also a running RUclipsr
Loving the consistent videos!!could you do one on how you use your garmin to help you improve too?just bought a fenix 5/Adidas boost 6/body glide/hydration vest and a pair of oofos 😊all because of your recommendations
Hey! Wow, I hope you got some good prices for that little haul! All great stuff. Will have a think and see if I can come up with 5 tips for your Garmin. Will get something up within the next couple of weeks for you! Thank you for the support!
Ben Parkes thanks ben!will also incorporate the bits in this video!what time did you run your first marathon at?i have no idea on my estimated time yet
I'm going to try all these warm ups because I am training for the rocky half marathon November 9th and I'm trying my best to get faster because I am very slow plus I'm not going to lie to you I need to lose at least 40 pounds
Totally love this😍.. may you give some advise how to control breath during up hill and control step during downhill not fast and not to slow and to avoid any injured.. and maintain speed without easy get tired
Jai Anmal Probably not, do you want to half a day that you do some weight training and leg strengthening exercises. Also depends on your age the older you are, you need to be careful not to overdo it and cause an injury
Nice one xD. Can we get a video on the injuries ya faced growing up as runner. I just started my new 10k cycle, already feeling minor sores here and there.
@@BenParkes idk lol..i am just always sore after like 10 k around the knees and sometimes shins too. Is running fast really about getting over such pain tho, always makes wonder xD
2.36 marathon!! I was surprised though in the single leg lunges he was shaking a bit. I thought to do that sort of time u would have to be super stable. I'm just starting running and I want to build a runners body with exercises and drills as pounding pavement before being strong feels like a good way to get an injury. Also I try to do too much too soon so maybe just start a beginner program and stick to it and don't rush as axillary stuff maybe not as critical as actual running. Though what's ur goal? If an agile body ur goal maybe running not the way to go. But but then I said I want to do fast 5k!! Going nutz.
They'd make a good warm on for some of your easy runs. Maybe don't go straight into these, but after some gentle leg swings and a few minutes of very easy running. Then you'll be good to go!
So many coaches have you do these drills but don’t tell you why you’re doing them, which is key. It’s important to understand something to get full benefit from it. Also butt kickers and quick feet.
That's cool guy appreciate this it's also good I think I'm not for sure yet because I only have a dog that I run with maybe I will be able to run with people too some day, thank you for the encouragement ..
I find that at lower cadences (150 - 165 steps / minute), I am a mid foot striker but at higher cadences, my gait changes to a heel striking. I’m looking to correct this and hopefully these exercises help.

Welcome to the channel!
Great explainer video! I learned that 5th drill during junior athletics, we called it twinkle toes 🤣
Very interesting drills, very well done video. Do you suggest also to do these as a warm up or it is better to avoid not to risk injuries?
They'd make a good warm on for some of your easy runs. Maybe don't go straight into these, but after some gentle leg swings and a few minutes of very easy running. Then you'll be good to go!
As a kenyan,to be a good runner, start by training in a small steep hill, you will find your perfect comfort zone and step,no pain no gain cheers!
