I put off on heeled shoes for YEARS. After injury and recovery and still struggling in squat I finally gave in to heels. I hate to admit it changed everything. No more butt wink, no more crippling lower back pumps, no more powering through with my lower back and no more anxiety before every set. I would recommend anyone try elevating their heel with something 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch and seeing how it effects your squatting. I really regret not trying it sooner. Everything else I just lift in flat shoes. I did chucks for a while and using no bull flat shoes for last 3 years.
Most of the time I only wear shoes with good grip when I'm on the bench press 1 because my legs are pretty short and 2 so I can get good leg drive. The rest of the time I'm bare foot or in wrestling shoes.
I had a comp a while back doing Silver Dollar Deadlifts off some blocks. I was paranoid about my socked feet slipping on the waxy surface of the boxes. So I just started using lifters in training for deadlift. I just kept to doing it for 6 months, went back to bare foot deadlift and added some weight to my deadlift. Made everything feel easy after. It's basically a half inch deficit deadlift.
Rock climbing shoes are a game changer in truck pulls. It feels like the equivalent of having cleats to run on a track. Makes you feel glued to the pavement.
After about a year of focusing on stretching and mobility I accepted that my clubfoot-having-ass wasn’t gonna develop the ankle dorsiflexion needed to squat properly. I got the Reebok Legacy Lifters and started squatting 3 times a week about a month ago and have absolutely zero pain and feel nothing but muscle burn and have climbed my way up from 135 x 5 to 205. Every day I go I’m hitting a PR and it’s the happiest I’ve been about lifting in awhile. Besides squatting, I wear my merrell trail glove barefoot minimalist shoes for absolutely everything. Loved this video
I use to train bare feet most of time. The only time I put shoes on is when I swet so much that I get afraid of slip during the squat. I surely wanna avoid to fall with 225 in the top of my neck
Love the video! I always check ebay first. Got the $200 Reebok Legacy lifters for $70 cause they were open box show model. Not a thing wrong with them.
Another great video Brian. I bought those same Adidipowers over 2 years ago and they look almost brand new. I use them only on Squat/lower body days. I dont think I'm any stronger with them however with my old man mobility I can get into a better position for the lift which has kept me healthy. I use wrestling shoes for deadlifts and OHP. Nothing special for bench. Glad to see you so much healthier, it really comes through on the videos.
Thank you God for putting Brian on the path of recovery from his illness. Amen (squared). So glad to hear that you’re sorted out and on the mend. God’s peace and thanks for all the great training vids.

I just use my wrestling shoes. nice flat soles, comfy and they're the ones i won matches with so im superstitious that if i dont wear them i wont hit a PR lol
Man wear T.J. watt Reebok and love em. Good for lifting, running just an all over good shoe and cheap!!! Havent noticed and difference in lifts from those or my chucks lol but my feet are more comfortable and that's really why I wear them!
Can you make a video about how your deadlift, squat, etc. changed over time? With the older clips of your lifts I noticed some differences and I think it’d be interesting to see how your lifts have progressed in terms of form
Minimus were my favorite. Still have my first pair. Worn, torn and full of holes. Can get rid of them. Bought the newer "model" and they're not the same.
I lifted for many years in whatever gym shoes I was wearing. Destroyed some good shoes. When I got into Olympic lifting I found regular shoes caused issues in my feet so I bought a pair of Romealos 2 and I love them for squats and OHP. Deadlifting I like my Otomix. And as Brian says shoes really don't matter on benching.
Be on the look out for sales. I got my Romaleos 2s on sale for $100, and I often see the Adipowers for the same. They should also last you a long ass time. Running shoes on the other hand are a racket. Spend around $100 for a pair of shoes that will last you 6 months to a year.
I do just about all my lifting barefoot. When I do wear shoes, I go with kung fu slip-on shoes. They are very thin and light, with virtually no padding (so just about as close as possible to barefoot), and dirt cheap on Amazon. They work okay for me for sprinting, jumping, throwing, and assorted other uses. I wouldn't use them for anything needing extreme grip, but any pulling or carries I do are on gravel, grass, or straw, and I usually go barefoot for those. The only time I use other footwear for workouts is when I switch to boots because the snow is piling up. I have no plans to ever compete, so for what I do, the absolute minimal approach works great.
I tend to wear socks for deadlift and squats at the moment - then my running shoes for everything lighter ... I am now thinking I might buy something for lifting instead.
I have the adipowers which is what i think is the lifter example your using... i have only used them for squats and believe they help but im gonna try with the overhead

I gave up on gym shoes a long time ago. I have wide feet and I always found it weird that athletic companies never made more readily available shoes for wide feet. It's like basketball shoe companies not carrying bigger sizes despite them aimed at basketball players or endorsed by players who wear bigger shoes. I usually stick to mesh shoes but they always end up ripping after a few months and I refuse to spend crazy amounts of money on shoes.
I was using nike pegasus(running shoes) for a long time and couldn't figure out why my knees were feeling weaker and weaker and shakier etc, then tried using metcon 5s, what a difference. It's like my knees de-aged by like 10 years, not rly effecting how much I can lift tho, just feels better/steadier.
For a long time I just wore chucks and a lot of guys acted like I was crazy because I wanted to try powerlifting shoes because basically they are "pointless". But I bought some Adidas powerlifting 4s and I LOVE them. The soul on Chucks conform to my foot and are too soft. And if you tighten them too tight they hurt my foot. The Adidas conform to the TOP of my foot and I don't actually feel the material. And the soul of the powerlifters are perfectly flat and help you stay plastered to the ground. And thanks to the strap your foot stays very secure. When it came to the chicks they're just to flimsy and offered little to no support.
Do people ever squat in hard soles work boots or hiking boots. I have a pair of solid hiking boots. They have a non compressible sole, raised heal and are very solid. Does this ever happen?
In reality, while $200 is a lot of a pair of lifting shoes, they are an absolutely fantastic investment and will last years if you take care of them, so when adjusted for the amount of time you use them, they really are worth it. There are also some cheaper ones out there that are definitely just as good (for example Do-Wins), so if you can’t afford to or don’t wanna drop that much you can buy a slightly cheaper pair.

I started using your breathing and bracing technique, and for my squats, bench press and deadlift it did wonders, I really feel stronger and more stable during these lifts. But the problem appeared last workout. After succesfully finishing my deadlifts I went for strict overhead press. Already during first warm up sets with light weight I felt kinda dizzy. I have. If you like feeling flat footed with a small footprint, they're fine. Any other flat foot shoe is about the same though, and I don't think the toes give them any special advantage.
Over in the UK we don't "get" why North Americans say "I could care less" as that suggests there's still room for more care 😂 The metcon comments are very interesting!
I like squatting in heels like the Romealos. I forgot them one day and squatted in flats and it didn't go well. I have gotten used to the firm sole and the fact that I can push out and it doesn't move. I do RDLs as an antagonistic movement when I squat and I like the fact I can go a bit lower if I want to in lifters.

Literally throws out my shoes at the beginning. But I also got my metcons for free from a friend. Lol.
Thor & Eddie both did their world records in nothing but socks/bare feet
More throw back training videos
Like which ones are you talking about?
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial like the ones in this video, awesome to see how you used to train compared to now.
Just stick to wearing Crocs and be ridiculed.
Just Some Guy without a Mustache I wear crocs at home religious. Sooo versatile and comfy!
Came for the dogattack, stayed for the juggling
I train barefeet.... because I’m poor.
Over in the UK we don't "get" why North Americans say "I could care less" as that suggests there's still room for more care 😂
The metcon comments are very interesting!
The real question is, which shoe is going to make each of my arms 8 inches longer?
Z G Vibro 5 fingers
My first question was gonna be can I just go barefoot lmao thanks man.
Tried squatting in Romaleos and hated it. So I went back to bare feet.
NO VIEWS! LETS GO BRIAN
All im sayin is John Haack pulls 700+ in crocs.
I deadlift and squat in socks, otherwise I'm wearing Vans.
Barefoot master race!!!
Any man that kisses his dogs on the lips I am an immediate supporter of.
Lifting barefoot sounds based as fuck.
nah i would rather go barefoot but, let's see how to choose a shoe next time i go shopping
Socks it is!
