This classic 1963 film stars Steve McQueen as an American soldier imprisoned in a German POW camp during World War II. McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Garner, and James Coburn are prisoners who help Sir Richard Attenborough plan a large-scale breakout. The renowned composer Elmer Bernstein provides a rich and expressive score and a particularly stirring theme to this true story.

Movie was a true story about 50 British airmen who were caught tunneling out of Stalag Luft III November 1942.
My dad (a B-17 bombardier) was shot down on his 25th mission and was held as a POW in Stalag Luft III from October 1944 until November 1945 when he was liberated by Patton’s troops.
Quentin R. “Jack” Bass (3-07-1919 2-15-1994)
Dad & crew all survived bailing out. Dad threw at least one wounded crew member out of the falling plane. Dad received a purple heart plus 3 oak clusters. He returned to Cleveland Tennessee & married mom, worked in a foundry 8 yrs until beginning a 42 yr career in the textile industry as a personnel manager in Central North Carolina. He was an everyday hero in our community. He hired so many people over the years that 418 people attended his funeral. He was without question the most selfless man I have ever known!
This is the best original score done for any movie.
Growing up my dad and I watched this together. He absolutely loved the sound track and the movie, one of his all time favorites. He passed away earlier this year suddenly from a massive stroke, and I've been missing the hell out of him. I was thinking of him today and put this on, it's been years since I've listened to the sound track or seen the movie. Thank you for putting this on here.
This was one of my father's favorites as well. He also passed from stroke complications and was an ex-U.S. Army Dragon soldier... May our father's rest in peace - God Bless.
My condolences! Sadly I share that with you and the timeframe. I too have a hole in my heart but the 1 thing I can say is the pain OS a testament to the fact that they were great men as bad dads are not missed one tenth as much. I know this as my best friend lost his and he does no longer grieve and shed maybe one or 2 tears whereas I will miss mine all my life! ❤ to you.

Same here with my Poppa. He was a WW2 Vet. 101st. Whenever the movie came out, we would watch it together. Sis and brother saw a little then slept or did something else. He passed away a while back. I still see it and remember my Dad. By the way, one of the best treats of this move? Any movie with Charles Bronson without his mustache, reminds me of my Dad. Looked very similar when he was young. Miss the hell outta him too!

Elmer Bernstein (brother of Leonard Bernstein) reportedly made so much on royalties from the soundtrack that he never had to work another day in his life.
Elmer Bernstein was not related to Leonard Bernstein. They were just friends.
I love this movie since I am a kid, and years after I heard my uncle how he told us my grandpa's POW stories.
Grandpa mentioned when he was in the French captivity as a soldier of the Hugarian Royal Army french civilians always asked him is he English because he looks like a "typical English".
However as I watch his old pictures and my childhood memories in the same hat he looked like Sedgwick the manufacturer.
Grandpa was an orchardist, and a mountain-artillery crewman.
Lost fam I never met. Murdered in the camps as Nazis didn't like handsome American soldiers..especially flyers, etc.
