I'm so pleased that the structures shown are all still in place and the locals haven't changed all that much. Germany is a scenic and beautiful country.
I would love to ride that same route that Steve rode on a replica of that Motorcycle. If someone wants to put up the fence I would even take a shot at the jump. Saw this movie in '63 and was hooked on Motorcycles ever since, unfortunately I had to wait five years to get my first one . Who says a movie can't change your life. Very well done video, there's no doubting these location are correct.
Thank you. Absolutely loved this. One of my all time fav films. I watch this at Christmas almost every year. Being a movie location scout I totally appreciate this work. Amazing how so many of the locations were very rural in 1963 and are now quite mainstream "in town" locations.
Hey like so many who's fathers fought in WW II and our generation grew up on WW II films, book and tv shows ! Love these three segments you put together ! About four or five years ago I went to a reunion of Stalag Luft III veterans in Colorado Springs . Fantastic experience to talk to some of the veterans who were POW's there during the war . Even had several British & Canadian veterans who were in the camp that night of the actual escape ! US POW's had been moved to another camp and luck for them they were not involved in the actual escape . Meet one veteran who was a digger and one was a penguin who spread dirt in the camp ! Amazed that many came from all over the US & Europe for this event ! Just had a friend who visited the site of the actual camp and there is a nice museum there now ! No real Capt Hilts and no motorcycle escape but still a great WW II film classic ! Much thanks for your efforts here ! Enjoyed it much !!! TC
Excellent job on the scene splitting. Have been there 3 times over the past 5 years while touring on my motorcycle searching out the same locations. Lots of fun. Hats off to the Brit Don Whistance for his web site on the Great Escape over the years. Your video's have added to the legend of the movie. To make it easier for those searching for the locations, can you include a map for reference. Again great job, from Vancouver, Canada.
Having a map to show the location's would be helpful for anyone wanting to visit these sites around the Fussen area. It is a very scenic area to visit, along with a days outing to most of these locations. Nice work on the video.
very well done,, whaoo ,, im impressed,, the only thing i wish you could have done is writing the locations as we watch ,, but other than that,, you guys have done a pretty good job ,, im sure this must have been super hard to find those place ,, and after so many years we know places can change a lot,
I'd like to do this if I was an European.Nice to know many places can still keep the same atmosphere.Steve must enjoy watching this from the upper place(or maybe behind the house or hill).
Hello guys!!! Excellent work!!! The point that Steve McQueen jump the fence where exactly located on Google maps? I would like also to ask, the point 08:05-08:14 where the German troops chasing the Hilts where located on Google maps?
Hi! thank you for the praise! These should be roughly the coordinates for McQueen's jump: 47.5804443, 10.6019448 the other location is here: 47.5940496, 10.5523278 Have fun and dont forget to suscribe! 😉
You are great guys, one question, on the video between 4:45-5:00 we see you to standing on the snow pole the point that Hilts put the tripwire to capture the German motorbike, I was there recently and I know where the location is but I couldn’t find exactly the point where you were standing?? Can you coordinated on Google maps??? Thank you!!!
I have to say this is the most brilliantly put together filmin location I've ever seen. Everything is included. I am a huge Great escape fan and a huge fan of Steve McQueen. You have made something here which is a massive celebration and honour to the film. Where are you guys from and what was your favourite location from the whole movie? Thank you for making this for all of us to see. The music added from the film was also a great touch as Elmer Bernstein was one of the great film composers!
Thanks for the nice comment. We come from Germany and live about a three-hour drive from the filming locations. I have already been on a discovery tour three times. However, that was ten years ago. Favorite filming location is difficult to say. The hut and the meadow with the legendary jump are of course at the forefront. The best thing, however, was that we were able to stay in the original hostel where the stars stayed. The owner has changed almost nothing since then. Believe it or not, I slept in the original Steve McQueen bed twice! No joke!
@@jimkirk351 wow. I can't believe that with the Hostel. Honestly the original Steve McQueen bed since 1963?? Must smell by now, but if Steve McQueen had slept in it then I would of done the same 😂 Like I said, you all did a great job. What is the name of the town in Germany where it was filmed? I've been told it's close to the Austria border. 👍🏻
@@jameslewis1126 yes, the original bed! Of course just the frame. You had to bring your own duvet cover and blankets. The furniture is the same! It's a shame I can't post a photo here. The owner was born the same year as McQueen, if I remember correctly. He is now over 90 years old. The escape scenes were largely filmed in and around Füssen. Neuschwanstein Castle is very close. The camp recordings were made in Munich at the Bavaria Film Studios. Where are you from?
The german actor Siegfried Rauch was the godfather of Steve McQueen son. He lived some kilometers from this location away. They became best friends during the filming of Le Mans
im going soon to germany to bavarian , i want to know how to find that wood house , i want to be right on the set , please someone let me know how to find it , the address
@@christmaschannel4996 he did everything except the jump because the studio wouldn't let him. Some of the scenes where you see a German riding a Motorcycle it's actually Steve chasing Steve. Steve was a great Motorcycle rider and racer.
Producer wouldn't allow him, because, of high insurance. Steve McQueen wanted to do his own stunt ride jump over the wooden obstacle, but, he was denied. He did the bike ride, a short one. The guy on the motorcycle was actually Steve Mcqueen.
At 9:06 wow lucky to still have the barn standing today. Amazing. The same timber too. Remarkable.

Thanks for the video. I've been fascinated by this story since I was a kid. Great movie.

Truly I Feel some important unknown feeling when I see this video by remembering the Great Hero Steve Mc Queen and may GOD BLESS Him GOOD HEAVENS
Yes, he was unique! These kind of actors don't exist anymore! I'm a big fan too! Died far too early. Rest in peace Steve!

1963 when I was 7 years old this movie was my introduction to WW2.
The knots on the wood match up , amazing 👏
Thanks for your comment! Yes of course, it is still the original wooden board. Even the little nail is still there! 😉
Thank you for the interesting and interesting project.
This is fantastic really interesting seeing then and now. Some breathtaking scenery.
Amazing scenes from a great movie. One of the top 10 WW2 movies of all time and great scenery. Thank you for sharing from Canada.

Outstanding tribute to the film and our heroes, of all us 60's and 70's kids who were raised on The Great Escape. BIG X LIVES!!

Agree with the other posters. 9:50-10:09 regarding the original, unpainted timber! Absolutely stunning . . . .

Füssen is my home town, where most of the escape scenes were filmed. And the also the famous bike stunt, of course.

Where are those reenactment tunnels and motorcycle, is there a Great Escape museum?
Shadowbermuda1
No, no museum. It was a special exhibition of the town of Füssen in the year 2013 to the 50 anniversary.
It was such an amazing feat of humanity and a film, I wish they would make a museum of both the film and the actual escape.
