- Here it is, the Ben Howard community's white whale / holy grail in it's entirety.
I was so lucky to finally be able to get my hands on it, as noted in other forums/threads, to honor the request of the person who gave this to me, I will not be uploading Back To The River, I can't break that promise. It was either going to be no tracks or this one, so at least we got one :)
It felt so strange finally hearing this song, chasing it for years and years and finally getting it. Enjoy!

Amazing to hear the most earliest work of my favorite artist. This song is really in different style then the rest. Amazing!
I know, really a rare situation to have an artist you love for more than a decade and hear a song for the first time that is ~15 years old or so

From what I have heard from his new album, seems like he has taken many steps back since kingdom
He is infinitely better nowadays. But I guess nostalgia and songs easy to the ear make it seem otherwise
@@marcmatabadenas2166 disagree. He found true magic with his original sound, and like so many that do he didn’t realize it and started making weird depressing experimental music. I mean some of them are alright, nice melodic soundscapes but it’s nothing like the style that brought him success. Maybe the records will grow on me, IFWIW did a bit, some noonday songs have, but I consider it a tragedy he decided he wanted to change so dramatically.

Unlike Max here who is a great fan and keeping his word on someone, Heron just enjoys the attention I think and is using its value as an excuse. I doubt he'll ever sell his copy. I would love to see it all get leaked inevitably one day and him make a big fuss about it. Hahaha
@@polymorose if that's the case, I hope it gets stolen and shared. I met Ben in Dallas in my birthday in 2015. He wouldn't want his music to be kept secret. He just is such a musician he's not fighting to make sure these things reach his fans against industry's interests.

Thank you for uploading this. Honestly, wouldn't be able to listen to this if it weren't for both your hard work chasing down these songs or your willingness to share. And what a different side of his music we were able to see due to all of this. There are a few glitches (0:01 - 0:02; 4:30; 6:22 - 6:23). Is this how you have the file, or is it something that happened when uploading the song to RUclips?
I appreciate the thoughtful reply! It's hard to explain to people who don't get it just how much of the previous 10 years were spent scouring the internet for this. It was enjoyable though the whole time, to the point that once I finally got it I almost didn't know what to do. (I didn't listen to Back To The River for over a year after getting it from the source I found, I just had been chasing it for so long I wasn't ready for the chase to be truly over).
As for those glitches, yea those are in the files I have prior to uploading to RUclips. The person who sent me the files (in exchange for the deal we made) sent them like that, so I'm not sure if it's that the CD is just 15 years old and was a bit scratched or what, but that is how they came!

I am now digging into this hole pre-2011. I am an audio engineer and really interested into the chronology of these demos, if you don't mind talking more about this since you definitely know far more than I do.
I understand there were 2 recordings of Games in The Dark EP. It seems like it from the difference in Ben's performance as well as the production of the songs. How far apart are these, do you know? And what is the track list for both? I've noticed on the subreddit dedicated to him that a group of people managed to get a copy of Games in The Dark including Back to The River and and "alternate versions" of Games In The Dark and Wouldn't Be a Lie. Both of these are more polished in terms of production, I suspect they are in the 2nd recording of GITD EP (?). Were Jessica and Back To The River part of the initial EP? Where does Ocean Song fall into all of this? Is Ayla Schafer doing backing vocals on both EPs? I'll leave links to all the tracks, if it's of any use.

- any idea where is this from? sounds like this is exactly the version most people have, just layered with ambience from the cafe (the guy's story really is pretty neat to be honest)

@@ad3398 at least to me, I think it stands to hold meanings behind people’s morality, selfishness, and fears of consequences to their actions. Even if they were morally trying to do the right thing, a persons fear of the possible outcomes for themselves may cause them to turn to the wrong choice. That’s pretty blunt though, I don’t know if there’s any deeper story or anything

The existence of it had been known for 12+ years, but apart from the one known person who owned the physical copy (and wouldn't share it), no one had heard it or been able to come across it. It was very wild when I finally got my hands on it

From what I've seen on Reddit, Max is keeping to his promise - he's heard it but been asked not to share it in order for this song to be released into the wild. The person that has it doesn't want to share it. I think it's to have something that is only theirs, especially something this rare and seeing as Ben has probably long forgotten about these unreleased tracks, they possess the power to share with the world. That's just some people
I think it took a lot of convincing to release this but I do think whoever has Back to the River and whatever other gems will come to their senses one day.

no you can't. we only know of two physical copies that exist. and both refuse to give the other song for mp3 listening. we thankfully have this one after 10 years....
