I never got why people used kindles or ebooks at all, until I read on an eink screen. I cannot stomach reading for a long time on my phone or computer screen. My eyes constantly wander and I find myself reading the same paragraph over and over and it isn't enjoyable. Reading on a eink screen is a game changer. I still love holding an actual book but with two young kids now, holding a book open in one hand and flipping pages while trying to feed the baby a bottle is very impractical. A kindle is really light and easy to change pages with one hand. I feel like there are a lot of people that can't stand kindle on their phones but their lives could be blown wide open if they tried an eink screen.
i actually hadn't thought about that because for me the screen doesn't make any difference. but yeah if a phone screen isn't great for you then an e-reader would absolutely be the right choice
Kindle isn’t the only option out there as well, it’s the most well-known but there are so many more e-readers of varied price ranges that offer far more flexibility and freedom when it comes to getting your books. I used to use my iPhone/iPad for reading and I hate that they swallow up your books so if you don’t have the epub backed up, you lost it for good. I’ll never pick up another device that slapped DRM on my books like that again. I also live outside of US/Europe, so getting physical book is really costly in general when it comes to English titles. Ebooks and e-readers are just better for that.
I'm very lucky that I was gifted a kindle in 2018, and whilst I've definitely gotten usage out of it, it was definitely not in my budget at the time. They're a nice to have, especially with smartphones nowadays, but totally not a requirement
@@AbiofPellinor yeah I also think that as a gift they are really nice. I just saw a lot of people making it out to be something you absolutely need which kind of annoyed me
I paid my kindle 80$ on amazon with discount, i am downloading great books in mobi format for free ( i would never pay for ebook), about practicality of e reader is sufficient to talk. Yes, everyone who can afford it should have it.
well I would hope you pay for your books, just because you get a book in an ebook format doesn't mean the author shouldn't be paid. that is quite questionable
If you're traveling or on the go most of the time it's a game changer. I commute a considerable amount and it's so nice to have an ereader, no decharging of the phone and I get eye strain bc I look at the screen most of my day, so eink is a really comfortable switch. Also, not in the US, and english ebooks are cheaper than importing the english books or buying them in german. And the online library is so much less hassle. Haven't got a kindle though. And not color just for reading. The acessories are bonkers though, I have more than one case, but that's mostly because I'm frightened that there will be none for my ereader in the future anymore and bc I have different kinds (to put them up on the table and to read on the go), and because I first didn't know what I wanted.
@@magicblue1192 I think that might also be a point of preference. Though my biggest problem with that is that I can't read my Library books on my kindle so I often don't have a choice other than to use my phone. But I absolutely get the point about not wanting to use your phone because of the charging
They do make e-ink tablets that run Android OS, but they are several hundred $/£, so they have the same problem. What apps can work on what device varies by region, I bought a Canadian booktuber a kobo bc she couldn't get library books on her kindle, but the kobo can.
@bookishfranzi967 in August 2023 I think I payed $120 Canadian which is about $95 USD so it wasn't too painful lol. And I think that was both the kobo and case.
for me they are more practical to read when I want to read in bed or when I'm travelling, for my partner because he doesn't like the feeling of paper so there are a lot of different reasons for choosing ebooks ;)
I’m homeless and broke, and need to be on the move often, so I need an ereader. I think insisting on physical books just because it’s a preference is a sign of one’s privilege. Ereaders are better for nomads and people who can’t afford to spend so much money eh during every move.
