You really captured my personal haul/unhaul book guilt! I don’t buy a lot of books physically, but will come back from the library with 8 books at a time. Past me of three weeks ago sometimes picks books I’m not in the mood for today, so I get not wanting to read books past you chose years before. The benefit there is I gleefully return the book with the knowledge I could check it out in the future and someone else may pick it up in the mean time. I kept getting interrupted while watching and wondered if you have reading friends or family who might like to borrow some of The Unreads? This way, someone else could find enjoyment from them and the books books won’t stare forlornly at you from the shelves. :)

Yeah I do that with lending ebooks from my libary as well :D I only have one friend who also reads a bit, but she likes quite diffrent books. So when I do have one I think she would like they go to here but it doesn't happen often. But I do plan on donating the books that I didn't like/dnf at some point, I just really need to look into where the best place would be to donate them.

Sorry you aren't feeling well, hope you feel better soon. Hope you enjoy the rest of Firestarter, I like it! That reminded me that I should check out the new(ish) remake of the movie they did a few years ago. Also if your curious about the Audible price I pay, it's $229.50 for 1 year that is the premium plus yearly plan which is 24 credits and all the other membership benefits. That's about 207 euro per year.

@bookishfranzi967 There are 2 Firestater films. There's a 1984 0ne with a very early in her career Drew Barrymore as Charlie, and a 2022 one with Zac Effron as Andy. I like the old one bit havnt seen the new one. I don't know how it works in Germany, but in the US there are 6 plans for audible. Mine is the top tier one which is the biggest upfront cost but cheapest per book. I've had audible since 2012 and have a library of 712 books. I do spend more on audible for the daily deals I want which is a normally much more expencive book on sale for between $1.99-$5.99 I buy about 15 of those per year. I can list all 6 plans and details but it'll pbly be different in Germany so not sure how useful it would be.

    • @bookishfranzi967

@zachreads uh well then I might just have to watch both. Oh I think in Germany there might only be one plan for audible, so I don't think I would really have a choice. But it's nice to hear that it seems to be a really good way to get audiobooks

I only read philosophy. I read 2 books a month at most, sometimes not even a whole book month. I read parts of the book and just let it sink in for a while, thinking about what I read and trying to figure out what it means for my life. If you just read book after book without ever thinking about what you read then what's the purpose of reading.

yeah I can understand that viewpoint. I do enjoy reading challenges but I enjoy personal challenges in all my hobbies. What I don't do is compare myself to others because that would take away the joy for me. I think that might just come down to different personalities (the challenge setting)

I'm inthe middle too! I read 187 books last year and had the oppisite reaction, I'm going to try to slow down and read fewer books this year. I'd like to end up in the 130 range. The booktuber I watch who read the most read over 650 and half that is way more than I could manage so competing is futile. I agree 2 books a year counts as a reader, and have told people who say they don't read enough to have a booktube channel (who read around 30 per year) that that's more than enough.

This video was such a refreshing take-thank you for addressing something so many of us feel but might not say out loud. The comparison trap at the start of the year can definitely sneak up on us, especially with all the “I read X books” videos flooding our feeds. Your reminder that any amount of reading makes you a reader is so important and needed to be said. As a professional reader-it’s literally part of my job-I try to remind folks of that reality whenever possible. Comparing yourself to someone who reads as part of their profession is like comparing yourself to an athlete when you don’t train for a living. It’s not a fair comparison, and it can really take away the joy of reading. Your emphasis on reading at your own pace and focusing on what makes you happy is spot on. Reading should be about enjoyment, connection, and discovery-not a competition. Thank you for this grounding reminder as we head into the new year!

Kindle isn’t the only option out there as well, it’s the most well-known but there are so many more e-readers of varied price ranges that offer far more flexibility and freedom when it comes to getting your books. I used to use my iPhone/iPad for reading and I hate that they swallow up your books so if you don’t have the epub backed up, you lost it for good. I’ll never pick up another device that slapped DRM on my books like that again. I also live outside of US/Europe, so getting physical book is really costly in general when it comes to English titles. I never got why people used kindles or ebooks at all, until I read on an eink screen. I cannot stomach reading for a long time on my phone or computer screen. My eyes constantly wander and I find myself reading the same paragraph over and over and it isn't enjoyable. Reading on a eink screen is a game changer. I still love holding an actual book but with two young kids now, holding a book open in one hand and flipping pages while trying to feed the baby a bottle is very impractical. A kindle is really light and easy to change pages with one hand. If you're traveling or on the go most of the time it's a game changer. I commute a considerable amount and it's so nice to have an ereader, no decharging of the phone and I get eye strain bc I look at the screen most of my day, so eink is a really comfortable switch. Also, not in the US, and english ebooks are cheaper than importing the english books or buying them in german. And the online library is so much less hassle. Haven't got a kindle though. And not color just for reading. The acessories are bonkers though, I have more than one case, but that's mostly because I'm frightened that there will be none for my ereader in the future anymore and bc I have different kinds (to put them up on the table and to read on the go), and because I first didn't know what I wanted.

They do make e-ink tablets that run Android OS, but they are several hundred $/£, so they have the same problem. What apps can work on what device varies by region, I bought a Canadian booktuber a kobo bc she couldn't get library books on her kindle, but the kobo can.

A sci‐fi that has a journey and a lot of travel that I really enjoyed was "Star Scrapper" by J.N. Chaney. It as also one of the funniest books I read all year! I read The Coldest Touch by Isabel Sterling in January, and gave it 1.5☆. I hope you like it more, but "The Midnight Girls" by Alicia Jasinska was much better. (It was witches not vampires, and is very slow burn but I really enjoyed it!)

You pronounced Dryad correctly the second time dry-ad. I havnt read Eddings, but from what you said maybe try "Furies of Calderon" by Jim Butcher, "Malice" by John Gwynne, "The Shadow of What was Lost" by James Islington, "The Last Ranger" by JDL Rosell "Shadow of the Fox" by Julie Kagowa (if a medieval Japan setting would work for you).

Very relatable. I realized I liked the idea of them more than the act of doing them. It felt like I was just repeating the info since I also use Goodreads. I also don't get annotating fiction books that you're reading for pleasure.

Had to work my way through my audible backlog. 😂 I managed to get from nearly 80 down to roughly 10 or 15 books. My physical TBR is 7 books strong. 😋 On the other hand my kindle tbr is really full, because I use the "stuff your Kindle days" when you get many books for free. :) I also buy a lot of books that are on my want to read list when there are flash sales and an ebook suddenly cost 99 Cent instead of 10€. Reading in english, instead of german was such a huge money saver. Also, moin Kollege. Auch ohne den Namen zu lesen gleich erkannt, woher du kommst. 😁❤️
