I am back in Wales and am out on my first solo wildlife photography excursion. To ensure I can actually get something together for a video, I have chosen one of the most accessible mammals here in the UK, the grey squirrel.

Everyone has to start somewhere, I did so 20 years ago and still come home with squirrel photos, never tire of it! Kudos to you for vlogging your experience, looking forward to your future wildlife experiences.

Patience is something I will have to learn 😂 I have a sports photography background and that's very fast paced compared to wildlife. I think this time I wasn't expecting it to get as cold as it did, blooming UK weather! 😂

Hi Jo, great video, thanks for posting. You got some nice shots! I would suggest wearing darker gloves. I move my hands a lot when Im shooting so I got some camouflage gloves, which I think has helped make my movements less obvious.

Glad you enjoyed the video 😄 That's a good idea, I didn't realise how cold it was going to be and they were my emergency camera bag gloves 😅 I do have some black ones that I will be bringing with me from now on 👍
Buy a yoga mat to sit on it's nice and warm and better than some plastic,you can fold it easy in to tree layers.

Great first solo video Jo... you are a natural in front of the camera. Great coat... might want to consider some dull trousers (grey/black/green) - and a cheap scrim net or bag hide will help you have the wildlife come closer to you. Good luck and keep going!

You have a great lense with the 70-200 f2.8 don’t be going crazy buying a gazillion lenses. Your shots look sharp here, looks like a great day sitting out. Love the jacket, defo more wildlife friendly. Love it..

It's like it knows you have a camera because the times you're out without it, they are always in full pose mode 🤣
Ah, fantastic! Great work, Jo 😊I agree with the 200-600 lens, if you'd have it at that point those shots of the squirrel would've been amazing. Don't get me wrong, these were really fantastic as well but having the right equipment for the job makes it better for sure. I'm very excited to one day buy a "wildlife lens" for my OM-5 as well.
It's right at the top of my 'gear I need to buy' list 😂 hopefully I can acquire one soon 🤞
@@JoHeard It's a great lens. Quite lightweight for its range, and is even "somewhat" macro capable, with its minimum focus distance of 2.4 metres. I sold mine a few years ago when I made the terrible decision to return to dSLR from mirrorless, but I'm switching back soon, and the 200-600 will be one of the first purchases.
New to your channel Jo but really enjoyed your first solo video. Underlines how difficult it can be outing the field sometimes to get the great images. Will defo watch your Scotland video. Can I ask where you bought your jacket from? Thanks Ian 👍
Heya Ian, it is definitely much harder that I thought it was going to be 😅 the coat I got is a Jake Pyke Galbraith Smock in English Oak. I got it from New Forest Clothing as it was on offer 👍

It's this one: www.jackpyke.co.uk/products/galbraith-smock I prefer the smock to a zip jacket as it has a really handy massive pocket in the front, ideal for lens caps and phones 👍 I got mine from New Forest Clothing as they didn't have one small enough on the main website
