    It's a Bliss ! Shri kanthimathim, an amazing piece in hEmAvathi, the 58th mELA,. dIkshithar composed this krithi when he visited tirunelveli which is shown in the sAhi Shri kanthimathim", an amazing piece in hEmAvathi, the 58th mELA,. dIkshithar composed this krithi when he visited tirunelveli which is shown in the sAhityam "shuddha tAmpraparni thata sthithAm". The krithi has a soul in it which creates a sort of very intoxicating and sullen mood and it leaves you wanting for more. And once again, Something to be experienced. Goddess kAnthimathi(Parvathi) is saluted and depicted with great care by dIkshithar. Every word has its beauty and infinite possibilities to showcase the beauty and scope of this rAgA.
    Pallavi:
    shrI kAnthimathIm shankara yuvathIm
    shrI guruguha janani vandEham
    Meaning:
    dIkshithar sings "Goddess kAnthimathi, the young wife("yuvathIm") of Lord Shiva("shankara"), I prostrate before you and worship("vandEham") you, the mother("janani") of guruguha."
    Simple sAhityams as usual provide the flexibility required to sing beautiful sangathis. The "R; G M P D P" start is amazing and the "R; G R R S" take-off for "shrI guruguha" is just mind-blowing. It sets the tone of the krithi and establishes it as a masterpiece. I also love the "N D P M G R S" which people sing for "vandEham". The pallavi in itself completes hEmavathi according to me. The first time I heard the pallavi, I thought "what could be more beautiful and comprehensive than this?" and dIkshithar answered me immediately with the charanam of the krithi..he makes a statement basically. No one ever will handle hEmavathi like this and no one needs to :).
    Charanam:
    hrImkAra bIjakAra vadanAm hiranya maNImaya shobhA sadanAm
    pAkashAsanAdi dEva vinuthAm parashurAma natha himashaila suthAm
    madyamakalam
    shukha shounakAdi sadArAdithAm shudhatAmpraparnI thata sthithAm
    shankAdhyashTOtthara sahasra kalashAbhishEka modhAm surahithAm
    Meaning:
    dIkshithar gives the ultimate salute to the Goddess by saying "she has the form("AkAra") of the hrIm bIja mantra." Just like Om(the father), hrIm is yet another powerful mantra and is considered the mother of all sounds on earth. hrIm is also the bIja mantra of the supreme sahasrAra chakra( the thousand petalled lotus) at the top of the brain in the astral body. By reciting the hrIm mantra and proper meditation, souls attain kaivalyam. And dIkshithar seems to be referring to the sahasrAra chakra when he refers to the dEvi as "She resides in the lustrous("shobhA") golden("hiranya") palace("sadanAm") filled("maya") with gems("maNi")".
    dIkshithar sings "She is praised and worshipped("vinuthAm") by Indra("pAkashAsana") and other("aadi") Gods("dEvAs"). She is worshipped("nutha") by ParashurAma and is the daughter("suthAm") of the God of the mountains("hima shaila")."
    The madhyamakAla sAhityam is the climax of this great piece. He takes it to a new level with the "P S N D P M" phrase at "shukha shounakAdi", the jIva phrase of hEmavathi..amazing only!!! dIkshithar continues to praise the Goddess "She is worshipped("ArAdhithAm") by shukha, shounaka and all the other saints and yOgIs. She resides("sthithAm") on the banks of("thata") of the pure("shudha") tAmpraranI river. She is bathed and her feet washed("abhisheka") with divine water from the pitchers("kalasa") containing the waters from all the 1008 divine sthalams of Lord Shiva ("ashTOtthara sahasra") and conches("shankA"). She is benevolent("mOdhAm") to the celestial Gods("surahithAm")."
    And the sAhityams just beautifully fit with the mood he creates. He once again uses the "PSND" phrase at "sahasra" and goes up to the "S M G R" in the thAra sthAyi at "kalashAbishEka" and then peacefully comes down for "mOdhAm surahithAm" as if to emphasize the merciful, benevolent side of the dEvi. And it beautifully blends in with the start of the pallavi to complete the epic :). Sometimes, this hEmavathi is so intoxicating and compelling that it keeps me drowned and helpless for weeks together. On the whole, the best ever krithi in hEmavathi and who else can do such justice to the rAga and beautifully using "hEmavathi"(another name for the dEvi) itself to describe shrI kAnthimathi..amazing stuff yet again from the God of music :).
    tyam "shuddha tAmpraparni thata sthithAm". The krithi has a soul in it which creates a sort of very intoxicating and sullen mood and it leaves you wanting for more. And once again, t Something to be experienced. Goddess kAnthimathi(Parvathi) is saluted and depicted with great care by dIkshithar. Every word has its beauty and infinite possibilities to showcase the beauty and scope of this rAgA.

    LaJawaab. The combo of Shrimati MS, Mutthu Swami, and Hemavati is a killer. Amma's mere utterance of the first 2 notes sweep the listener to a different level of Being. Dikshitar's Sanskrit is truly luminous, the beautify of the language shines thru any vocalist's exposition. truly a rocking number by MS AMMA.

      So true! Kriti in Hemavathi by Muthuswami sung by MS is like a triveni sangamam! Also, with the very first few notes, she makes the ragam clear, something which was apparently reinforced by her guru Semmangudi.

    Superb by MSS Amma ! Sri Kanthimathim Ragam: Hemavathi (58th Melakartha)
    ARO: S R G M P D N S || AVA: S N D P M G R S ||
    "shrI kAnthimathim", an amazing piece in hEmAvathi, the 58th mELA, which has offlate become one of thw most favourite rAgAs. dIkshithar composed this krithi when he visited tirunelveli which is shown in the sAhityam "shuddha tAmpraparni thata sthithAm". The krithi has a soul in it which creates a sort of very intoxicating and sullen mood and it leaves you wanting for more. And once again, the SSI version of the krithi is beautiful and something to be experienced. Goddess kAnthimathi(Parvathi) is saluted and depicted with great care by dIkshithar. Every word has its beauty and infinite possibilities to showcase the beauty and scope of this rAgA
    This Sanskrit song was composed by Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the trinity of Carnatic music. It celebrates the glories of the Goddess Kanthimathi, the consort of Sri Siva.Now it is sung in hemavathi ragam.
    The moola murthis (consecrated statues in the sanctum sanctorum) of Siva & Parvati in the temple at Thirunelveli Town of Tamil Nadu are known respectively by the names Nellaiappar or Veimuthanathar and Kanthimathi. Siva is said to have been worshipped by Sage Agasthya in a bamboo grove. Vei in Tamil means bamboo. Hence the title of Veimuthanathar for Siva in this temple. There are also other legends relating to this temple. The deities here have been celebrated in his songs by saint Tirugnana Sambandar.
    Meaning: I bow to Sri Kanthimathi. She is the consort of Sri Siva and mother of Sri Guruguha (Sri Subrahmanya). She has thebeejakshara “Hreem” as her face. (Mantras having less than 11 syllables are known as beeja mantras. Beejakshara mantras are one-syllable seed sounds which when pronounced aloud properly, activate and concentrate the energy and power of the mantra.) ”Hreem” is considered to be very significant among the variousbeejaksharas, as it grants the devotees’ wishes in full. Similarly Sri Kanthimathi is capable of granting fully all the wishes of the devotees.
    Her place of residence glows with gold and precious stones. She is worshipped by Indra and other gods. Parasurama worships Her who is Himavan's (the mountain Himalaya's) daughter. Sages such as Sukha and Saunakha always do obeisance to Her. She resides on the banks of the river, Tamraparni which has clear water.She becomes happy and pleased when she is bathed with waters from 1008 sanctified vessels made of conches etc. She grants welfare to the gods.

    Since Hemavathi is the prathimadhyama equivalent of Kharaharapriya, it is deceptive if the madhyamam is omitted in the aalaapana/swarams. Of course, a professional musician like M. S. amma would absolutely know how to differentiate. Kalyani and Shankarabharanam are so different sounding because they make it so using signature phrases!

    Hemavathi is the Prathimadhyamam equvt. of Kharaharapriya and hence your confusion, rightfully. The violonist between 6:20 - 6:40 and between 7:00 - 7:20 really casts this doubt. But the classic raga prayogas need to be employed to delineate the ragas.

  • @ajayranganathan6507
    @ajayranganathan6507 11 лет назад +7

    This is not the Haimavathi ragam.. in the alapana, the phraseology used was the DhesiSimharavam. Phraseology for Haimavathi and DhesiSimharavam is different according to Sangita Sampradaya Pradharshini. Vishesha prayogas for DhesiSimharavam are /d p m p n n S/, /p n d n S/ which are not used in Haimavathi. MS Amma has rendered it in DhesiSimharavam murchanas....
