How To Empty Jackson Pratt Bulb | How To Empty Drain After Surgery

This patient had a right side mastectomy after doctor diagnosed her with stage 1 breast cancer. Two drains were inserted into the operated area in order to to drain fluids because build up in the surgical cavity and under the skin flaps as part of the healing process. Both bulbs were drained and measured twice a day and the data was recorded in a chart for doctor review. This fluid can be a collection of clear serous fluid, lymphatic fluid, or the clear portion of blood, known as serum. This buildup is called a seroma, and it's the most common complication of breast cancer surgery.
1. Wash your hands: Use soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.
2. Open the bulb: Find the flap and gently pull it out to pop open the bulb. Keep the flap away from your face in case of splashes.
3. Milk the tube: Gently squeeze the tube between your thumb and index finger, moving your fingers toward the suction bottle to help dislodge any clots or obstructions. You can also milk the tube if you see fluid leaking around the insertion site.
4. Measure and empty: Measure the drainage in the open position and empty it into a measuring cup. Write down liquid amount on chart.
5. Squeeze and close: Squeeze the bulb flat to engage suction, then close the cap while the bulb is still squeezed.
