I feel very bad. I have the vh100r and I can not believe it can sound like this. I think this is what they mean whit that about "the tone is in your fingers". I will buy hands next time hehe
Laney VH100r was the best to my ears. Open, full, organic and a sweet top end presence. Probably the most underrated amp considering its incredible tone and versatility. The clean and crunch channels are awesome too
man I miss my VH100R. Meanest-looking and sounding amp. I love chrome control panels and black roosterhead knobs but the two handles makes it look even cooler
Loved the H&K most for these riffs and chorus parts. Thanks Browne for coming to the Netherlands last week. Sorry it was in this warm, smelly, sweaty basement, but you guys nailed it nonetheless!
amen w pacierzu Hmm.. the end of the video did confuse me. When he says the amp #’s they don’t match with the list in the description. I guess he’s just referring to the order via his routing device. So it’s the synergy/soldano?
One blended the harsher and smoother sections together amazingly and probably handled the range of tones the most seemlessly imo. Two had incredible articulation and note separation, especially on the chordy parts, where it easily blew the others away imo. Three seemed a decent bit 'edgier' than the rest, accentuating the highs loads, I kinda get the feeling its an older voicing. Four had a really full bodied, rich sound, perhaps sacrificing a bit of high end, but awesome for lower rhythm work. Five was very crisp for the first riff the open C# felt very distinct, probably good for single note style riffing imo. Six was the Mesa :)
You're a monster rhythm player, John :-) Really great to watch you play! The Laney and Synergy SLO seem to catch the low bass string best, the others seem to blurr it more or less.
The Mesa and the Hughes & Kettner where my favorite. I was able to guess the Mesa in the blind test and it was my favorite amp out of the first six. Love the Hughes & Kettner also though. I was especially happy about hearing those off the cuff riffs at the end
They all sounded great. The noise gate on the H&K really added clarity, whether it was needed is another question. The Mesa was so dark and squishy, I thought that it really stood out. I expected the EVH to be much higher gain and have much more bite. Synergy had that special something going on. But they all sounded killer.
Awesome vid as always. Damn when you are used to it a guitar amp sounds really soft without a overdrive in front. Probably i liked 3 and 5 that much only ones that were remotely sharp and tight without an od Cheers browne
I really liked amp 2, 3 and amp 5. Amp 2 was really heavy and muffled, sounds like a mesa boogie. Amp 3 had such a full and warmer sound and amp 5 had such a tight response, such clear note separation. Amp 3 was probably my favourite sound.
The second time i think the bass response gave away the Mesa, some i guessed right, the other wrong. If i had to pick one amp, i would choose the Ampete
Man I'm such a sucker for the Mesa. #2 and 3 are me all day long with number 6 tied for my favorite. I definitely need to looking into Ampete because that tone is ridiculous.
I was only able to guess number 2 and 6 as the H&K and Mesa respectively, the others I don't really know how they sound so I couldnn't make them out. Ironically those were also my two favorite amps.
Looking into the rectifier preamp, as there are some good deals around. I am just wondering how close it would sound to the full dual rectifier head, if I would use the preamp with a two notes 6L6 power amp sim or something like the Seymore Duncan powerstage? Anyone have any idea, have tested this out etc? I am of course not looking for a 100% copy of that sound, just something thasounds close enough in character.
I picked 2, 3, 6, 5, 1 and 4. No idea what they were, just order of my preference. Interested to hear the order/amps. I mostly use a 5150 pedal through an old 65w Laney TubeFusion. Love that sound, so wonder which the 5150 is.
I'd like the Laney of it had a lower gain tube. The SLO to me wins here. Next is the H&K or 5150... Maybe the 5150 needs an adjustment or 2... Like bump up the presence or treble slightly.
Is that from a Monuments song? If not it needs to be made into one :) I think #5 sounded the best for the chords of that riff, but liked others for the individually picked notes
I’m curious about small amps vs big amps for studio work.... I see you have a lot of large amps is there a reason you shy from smaller heads? From what I understand pushing an amp is where it’s at. Is there something that doesn’t scale linearly when recording big vs small amps?
Hey John, I would love to hear you talk about dialing in 8-string tones in particular, and if there are any differences compared to how you go about it for 6/7 strings to handle the lower frequencies. Was the H&K Triamp used for the 8 string songs on Phronesis? And do you find any differences with higher-wattage amps like the Triamp or a Herbert vs 100 watt heads? I really admire your tone, no matter what you play. Thank you!
Hello there John!! I'd like to ask you a question about guitar picks. As a fan of your music and your guitar work I'd love to hear your input on guitar picks, specifically if you find any significant differences between them with regards to sound as well as comfort and how are these two factors influencing the choice between the various options. It may be too much of a detail but judging by your technique it seems highly probable that you have a lot of insight on all that is guitar sound. Thanks a lot in advance!!
Laney (mid focused), Recto, Ampete, Soldano (clearer than the recto), H and K (feels hi-fi), 5150 (has that fizziness that the EVHs can have), those are my guesses
Honestly... Mostly total guesses for me. Had to rely on the extreme low and high end for clues. The 5150III is the only one I was truly sure on, but even now I'm not sure I'm correct, haha 1 - Laney VH 2 - H&K Triamp 3 - Syn SLO 4 - Ampete 5 - 5150III 6 - Recto
The riffhard thing seems genuinely cool. I self-identify as a rhythm player to other musicians, so it would be interesting to have content aimed at that role in a band. However, $30 a month seems steep. Thats like hulu+spotify+netflix combined (I only pay for spotify atm). As much as I love playing guitar, I can't justify that in my budget. I get the feeling I'm not alone, either.
Everything you just listed isn't comparable. Riffhard is not a source of entertainment, it is a dedicated teaching environment which gives you 24/7 access to the tools that will make you a better guitarist... IF you put the time in. Consider how much people pay per hour for a driving lesson, how much you pay per hour for a 1 on 1 guitar lesson. That makes 30$ seem cheap right? I mean, I spent nearly £1000 on learning to drive which would be over 4 years of 24/7 access to getting better at guitar. It's all about if you feel you really want to improve your own skill set but most people would make a serious advancement in 3 years. $30 for a continuous monthly subscription where you can re watch everything as many times as you need is actually insanely cheap to learn everything that is on there... Techniques, The down picking gym, Songwriting, Monthly competitions where you can win stuff while you learn as well as having the opportunity for me to work on your song live in front of all of the community. And to compare, 30$ would just about get you a 1-on-1 1 hour guitar lesson in the western world... or a couple of months of Netflix and chill. I understand it's not for everyone, it's all down to what you consider priority. I do appreciate your feedback though!
@@JohnBrownemonuments Thanks for responding! I am totally convinced the service is top notch. You've struck a vein of guitarists that rarely get attention by focusing on the craft of rhythm guitar. The Angus Youngs of the world get so much attention, but they're nothing without a Malcolm behind them. I practice hard, but I know it's invaluable to have some guidance. However, I'm a poor college kid, and $30 is a tank of gas, or food for 5 days. My own circumstances prevent me from committing, but I certainly would be inclined to subscribe to the service if I were better-off than I am right now. LOVE the new album! It immediately went into my metal playlist and will stay there. Cheers, from Iowa
I don’t really know which Amp is which but if I were to be asked by you, John, about what amp I like the most here then, it’d be Amp no. 4 and 6 Edit: Holy shit, so Amp4 is Laney? That makes me happy for I also use Laney amps
Plot Twist, they're all LINE6 POD!
Hahahaha
I have actually no idea which amp is which, Im just here to hear John play 😍
Paul Reuter don't feel bad. I own most of the amps he uses and I can't make them sound as good as he does lol. He is definitely a monster player
So which one is which? Im confused

@@GearsyGGAA sell those amps and give me the money. Bernie sandars would approve

#4 sounded really good. All the notes in the chords were clear and the nuances of the riff were easily heard. The riff was just freaking bad ass!
I agree
I knew the Ampete and H&K every time. They sound too damn good.
Laney Love !!
Your chord progressions are bad ass, dark with meaning. You do good work Mr. Browne!
Just bought an LH100R today .... OMG .... INSANE !
I love my Mesa Recto Recording preamp.
Loved the H&K most for these riffs and chorus parts. Thanks Browne for coming to the Netherlands last week. Sorry it was in this warm, smelly, sweaty basement, but you guys nailed it nonetheless!
nice to hear the sounds without backing music. Great!. Great playing. Nice riffs
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which amp is which, because you are able to make them all sound awesome. Also another killer riffing.
Laney (7:02) sounds badass! I always love that Marshall type distortion. The Laney just sounds a lot tighter and good clarity
thats not laney at 7 minute

CorvinRayne oh yeh on that case thank you!
Waiting for more videos!
Interesting! Gear vids are always cool to watch! Also great Vanta like riffs!!!!
I need to learn this riff.
I just came to hear you play.
nice Video and cool to watch in a study break. thx john! :P
Where else in the channel have you played this little snippet? I can’t remember what video it was but it’s abit more finalized
The laney is the KING here
Super interesting comparison, also shows how high gain amps can sound quite similar
Amp5 H&K is sick! reminds me of Bogner Uberschall somehow with the harmonics and tightness.
Cool sound
Number 1 was the best for my hears
3, 4 - nice sound!
Cool video dude. I really love the tone you get from the Ampete! Thing sounds awesome
could we hear all 6 layered together?
I really liked amp 2, 3 and amp 5. Amp 2 was really heavy and muffled, sounds like a mesa boogie. Amp 3 had such a full and warmer sound and amp 5 had such a tight response, such clear note separation. Amp 3 was probably my favourite sound.
what is the title to this song? john is so awesome!
Drummer here, I'm not very much into amps... but I really liked the Ampete
Me too - and I'm a guitar player, so that seems expensive.......!
Man some banger riffs man. Love it !
Guessed the Laney but only because John did a good job of describing it's sound in another video.
John, welcome to saint-P.... you are great!
Loooove that riffing 😍
Laney ftw
I liked 3,5, & 6, the other amps we're too muddy for my tastes. Beautiful riff man.
The second time i think the bass response gave away the Mesa, some i guessed right, the other wrong. If i had to pick one amp, i would choose the Ampete
No more TC?

revanreborn69 neither of those amps were number 6!
Nailbomb. Was looking at the alnico version.
This is what I'm talking about.. Time to nerd out!
anyone knows whether the main riff is part of a certain song or did he come up with it for this video? sick as hell.
OgDerpy nah wrote it the day before!
Liked them all except wasn't really feelin the H&K. Really suprised by the Laney. Loved the Mesa too......and the Ampete.....and the Synergy lol

I'd like the Laney of it had a lower gain tube.
The SLO to me wins here.

It's the Laney for me, but with lower gain as you said. It's got more dynamics to it than the others. My second is the Synergy SLO.
2 or 6 mesa, 4 hk maybe?
All that tone in one place...Is this a home studio or extraterrestrial workshop?
Is that from a Monuments song? If not it needs to be made into one :)
I think #5 sounded the best for the chords of that riff, but liked others for the individually picked notes

Evh and hughes are my fovourite 😍 but also laney is cutie
3&4 sounded sick as hell! I think 3 is EVH or at least that's why I hear in that amp :D
Mateusz Nakonieczny 3 is not the EVH :)
@@JohnBrownemonuments I knew my ears lie to em :D
Cannot wait to see the results :)
Just a guess
1- Hughes and Kettner
2- Laney
3- 5150
4- Ampete
5- Soldano
6- Mesa
Donald Johnson well, seems like you got 3, 5 and 6 right:)
1. 5150 2.H&K 3. Ampete 4. Laney 5. Synergy SLO 6. Mesa; thats my picks
Great 🤘🏻

1 and 4 for me
Triamp and rectifier were the best IMO

I like 3.
