2002. Pre tournament injuries to Gerrard and Neville. Beckham broke his metatarsal in April ( is that why he bottled it for Brazil's equaliser?)
04. No Rio due to the drugs test thing. Rooney breaking his foot against Portugal. Campbell's perfectly good goal being disallowed.
06. Rooney injured before the tournament. Owen limping out during the group stage. Beckham went off early during Portugal game, before Rooney followed him for the stamping.

@@chucky7826 the only weaker points back then were the goalkeeper (aging Seaman cost England in 2002 and David James was just unpredictable) and the facilities/preparation (things like opposition research or regeneration methods have improved since then).
@heppolo haha well predictable is hardly a label you'd put on pickford either. Seaman was probably a tournament or 2 too far and the likes of Nigel martyn and Tim flowers were probably underutilised in-between seaman and the Robinson/green era
England is the most underachieving teams in history, hands down. For a country that claims to always have some of the best players in the world, they have very little to show for it. They had one win and two draws in group play against inferior opponents, and then barely scraped by Switzerland on penalties. And I'm saying this as a fan of the English team. I'm from the US, but have always considered the English team as my team to root for since the US team sucks.
One thing I find bizarre is we praise domestic league champions who navigate winning a championship by winning ugly however grind out results in an international tournament and we hate it.
That is untrue. People praise lesser teams like Burnley beating bigger teams parking the bus and just scoring from set pieces as we love an underdog but England are in the top 6 of international teams. If Liverpool or City played like Southgate much fewer people would watch the PL

Foreign soil, knock-out game, major nation near the top of its game is the invariable point of failure. We need to significantly improve to start winning those types of games to convert us from Pot 2 QF tournament team to one that can compete in the final 4 regularly

On paper england and france should be getting to finals of every major comp the last 4-6 years. France done that England have got close but never over the line due to in game tactics. Reality Check: England had Slovenia, Serbia and Denmark in their initial group which (as usual), they made a pig's ear of. Conversely, Holland had France, Austria and Poland their group, all of whom, England would have struggled to get past. In the knockout phase, England made hard work of Slovakia and only a moment of brilliance from Bellingham saved them. In their next game against the Swiss, theY went a goal down and were again saved by the brilliant spotaneity of Bakayo Saka. Conversely, Holland comfortably beat Romania by 3-0 when it could have easily been six! And against Turkey, they went a goal down and came back to win the game 2-1 within normal time. Simon, do you now appreciate how delusional you sound, when you talk about England having "the best players in the world"??? SMH.
How about last tournament, scored 6 against Iran, 3 against the Welsh and Senegal, played well against france and were the better team and lost in Quarter finals. It's not been good to watch in the last 4 let's just get behind the team instead of all the negativity

Yes he received 'Flak' for playing without wingers and for not choosing Jimmy Greaves (when fit). The first game performance against Uruguay was woeful 0-0, but did improve in other group games.
Perhaps a touch fortunate against Argentina who went down to 10 men when their Captain Rattin was sent off. They were also due to play their Semi-Final at Goodison Park, but the FA managed to switch the game to Wembley?
Certainly by the Qtr Final stage the whole Country was behind the Manager and his team. Sir Alf had a plan (which he stuck to) with no wingers and whilst many thought this to be an ill advised strategy, he was lauded (quite rightly) for his team's ultimate success. - Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka who've been key players for Arsenal.
- John Stones who's has been a key player for Manchester City for years, especially in the treble winning season.

- Anthony Gordon who's had 20 goal contributions.

Bear in mind these English players, most of them, play with the best international players in their respective club teams. Phil Fodden plays with all the best from around the world at Man City.
