I was 21 and bought HD600 when they came out. Not because I was an audiophile, but because I walked into a store after getting a new job that paid a fair bit more. The 600 reputation have definitely held up better than I have a quarter of a century later haha.
im gaming, and music lover, (not professional music person) so i got hd660s, bigger soundstage and very smooth in vocal. 4years using it, never regret. up until today, still using it will continue using this. suitable for my daily use, feel blessed getting this earlier compare to others. i dont wish to upgrade or downgrade, just nice in price and practically use for my own daily drive.
Yea same here....had a hard time deciding between 600 & 660s....but all I needed it for hearing foot steps and rolling cars in pubg.... so I think I made the right choice
I'm a 600 guy also. Best one in the lineup. I have a kitchen sink model and I agree that the vocals are just spot on. Amazing and sound so natural. It can really play any music well which I think is one misconception. It does have enough bass punch and overall is very balanced with a bit of warmth. Not overly warm like 6xx. Highly recommend it above any of the others and can be a benchmark standard in any collection.
Thanks for this video, I’d been looking into excuses to validate my HD600 purchase, and this video pretty much summed up what I had been feeling, seeing as I bought the 600s based on your recommendations. That being said, I do genuinely enjoy the mid-range (especially female vocals) of the 600s and I plan to use these for the foreseeable future and I look forward to testing out many different genres of music with these moving forward. From one Josh to another, thank you for your amazing videos and I’m looking forward to more spectacular videos going forward!
He is Very Correct to me the Best Reviewer , I have all HD 6 line and fully agree with him. HD600 are the clearer , 650 are the warmer smoother and 660s in the middle . To me 660s are my favorite and the Imaging on 660s are better even than 660s2 and Sundara ...in my opinion.
My top two are the HD 599 SE and HD 6XX. Thank you Josh for being so informative and accessible. I rely heavily upon your take on all things audio related.
Great video and very educational. I've had the HD 660S' for a couple of years now and really like them. I recently purchased a pair of HD 6XX's from Drop when they were on sale for $199, which also sound great. For headphones that look extremely similar and share the same lineage, it's crazy how different they sound! I wasn't expecting that and I'm not sure if I prefer one over the other, but it's great to have the choice.
@@dpginthehouse Oh, that's a tough one. At $200, the HD 660s is a steal. If you're going to use them for everything (i.e. music and video games), go for the HD 660s because the imaging is far superior over the HD 6xx. I actually prefer the HD 660s because I like to hear everything, but on certain songs they can become bright and fatiguing over long listening sessions. For gaming (if you don't need a mic), they're way better. The HD 6xx are probably more enjoyable for long periods of listening and many people prefer their more traditional sound. You'll probably still be able to get the HD 6xx next year, but this will likely be your last chance to get a pair of HD 660s' and even if you don't like them, you could sell them at a minimal loss.
i have all 6 line , 660s have the best imaging and biggest soundstage of them all, HD600 are the best neutral vocal kings, 650 are the smoothest , 6XX are the darkest more Midbass of them all, and 660s2 are just 660s with a bit more low end and smoother midrange. Thats it ...
@@Tripokaridos22I’m about purchase either the HD 660s or HD 660s2. I have a limited budget so I can only purchase one pair. I have an ifi hip dac3 and a pair of Fiio JT1 closed backs currently, this setup does not provide enough width. Which pair of the HD 660’s will blow me away the most? I really value soundstage and imaging as I listen to a lot of OST’s and orchestral music, seeing as I can only buy one of the two which is the better all around pick? Sorry this is so long, it’s just rare to stumble upon a commenter with both of these cans! Cheers and thanks in advance!
My favorite is the 6XX. I've always preferred laid back sound signatures and while I've tried the 6XX and the 600, and think they're both amazing, the HD 6XX just has a warmer, effortless sound that I can listen to for hours at a time. That more engaging low end is so satisfying and tight, and while the vocal clarity is better on the 600, the 6XX is still no slouch.
@@Tripokaridos22 The cost difference has nothing to do with the sound. They do all cost the same to produce, maybe there is a $20 difference in the drivers, but I don't even think so. It's all marketing. They could have done the 6xx like the 650, but they decided to go for a slightly different sound, so they could still sell the 600 and the 650.
@@biomorphic The cost must be the shame or close we agree on that, other than that i know that 58X and 6XX doesnt have the shame quality ,Sennheiser quality control is very strict on their more expensive products and less on then cheapest . For example 660s2 have a quality certified paper and number . HD6XX 58X doesnt have , also i know that Drop products use the oledr pads also the black rings.
I agree with MST 1000%!!! In fact, I’d actually take it even further and also include the HD 565. That was my first good headphone and was Sennheiser’s TOTL before they introduced the HD 580. Don’t get caught up in a series # because both the drivers and the pads of both are easily swapable with any 6 series headphone to this day. I still have my 565’s in operable condition although worse for wear since they’re over 30yo! Still better soundstage than any 6 Series. Personally, I want Sennheiser to bring back an improved 7 Series. There’s a gaping hole in their price range that needs to be filled!
I had both the 580 and the 600 before settling on the 650. I can safely say the 580 and the 600 sound exactly the same, and for that reason the 580 truly deserved being mentioned.
Watching this video on my OG 1997 HD 600. Over the years, I replaced the headband, cable, ear pads, and headband cushion with the latter 2 getting yet another replacement/upgrade just last week. 🤟😎
I just got the 660s for around $250 and I’m in heaven! The sound is phenomenal! Plus, they still give that storage case with the 660s, unlike the 660s2.
Thank you 'JV'! I agree wholeheartedly with your conclusion. When my current 'main cans' wear out (if ever!) I will get the HD600s. Just watched / listened to your great review through my Sennheiser HD580s 😉 ...
I have heard more reviewers and testers say that the 6XX is identical to the 650. I have had a chance to try them side-by-side, and of course YMMV but I did not notice a significant difference. It also doesn't strike me as extremely veiled, another frequent concern about Senns in general and the 650 in particular. It has respectable clarity across the spectrum, despite the midrange emphasis. You're not losing out having a 6XX. Haven't tried the 58X but I'd like to.
The HD6XX and HD650 are exactly the same headphone, just with a different colour coating. Sennheiser even confirmed this in the past. Edit: audible differences could either be attributed to the usual unit variation, though Sennheiser seems to have quite low tolerances on the HD650 in that regard, or they could stem from the pad revision in 2021 where HD650s were still sold with the old pads but new HD6XX drops already had the new ones fitted or the other way round.
I've tested both, and if they are not the same, they a surely close enough to be a unit variation. I've heard more difference between revision of the same headphones than between 650 and 6XX
Maybe unit variation is a thing, but having both 650 with new pads and 6XX with new pads, they sound slightly different in that the 650 sounds more veiled while the 6XX sounds less veiled. 6XX for around $175 on sale is a steal!
@@Rsalmond83 The new pads Sennheiser released in i think 2021 did alter the sound of the HD600-line headphones a bit, generally making them slightly brighter and a little less warm sounding. Maybe the HD650 you bought still had the old pads on it while the HD6XX already had the new ones fitted. Generally they are the same headphone, but unit variation is a thing as well, especially in the treble region. However, Sennheisers HD650s seem to have quite low tolerances of unit variation. Beyerdynamic for example is much worse on that regard, especially on their "low budget" headphones like the DT770 or DT990.
I got the HD600 in January 2011 and then in September 2013 I got the HD650. I preferred the 650s warmer sound and like you said - it’s sort of just more enjoyable. Good enough reason for me. Sold the 600 to a happy buyer and have been using the HD650s as my daily drivers ever since! Going on 10 years now. Love them.
I’ve bought the HD6xx a while back. This is my first headphone. At first indeed it was “muddy” sounding to me, but i EQ’d it a little bit and now i love it. I can listen to it for hours on end. I also tried some Beyerdynamics, but had a feeling like they were a bit “sloppy” in their sound signature. I was tired after listening to those. I really like the fact that you differentiate each headphone’s character and sound signature. Makes me want to try some different HD cans. Thank you for al your hard work and nice video’s. Keep it up. I really appreciate it and get a ton of info. Makes buying and trying stuff way easier!
I got the HD580 in 2005 for $154 shipped brand new in the box. Sennheiser discontinued the HD580 cuz it is the 600 for dirt cheap. Same driver. Back in the day they said the 650 would "continue to improve with better DACs/amps" but the 580/600 wouldn't. This has not been my experience. Also I miss when I thought $500 was an "expensive" headphone lol
If u really have them all , then u know that everyone of them is irreplicable in something , for example 600 for vocals and clarity , 660s imaging -speed-soundstage-, 650 smoothness. So its all about taste.
@@Tripokaridos22 My opinion being, that Sennheiser actually wanna produce something 600+650, but they can't due to material limitation, so they seperated them aprt for those audiances to chose from.
@normanjin8897 When u say material u mean the Shape and pads of a headphone correct? I agree on that , because with the Shape that HD6 line has u can't change sound without changing the graph , for example U can't give bigger soundstage without scoop high mids on the same shape. I have tried years ago to use HD6xx driver on a HD599 shape and it sound just way different. In my opinion people should stop searching in a point and just enjoy what they have. 600 for vocals, 650 for smooth warm sound 660s2 lose that vocals and organic sound but wins something else like imaging separation, soundstage more bass and texture and instruments not being on background anymore. So u see it's all about taste. At the end of the day all of them have the same DNA it's not like u going from Hifiman or Beyer to these for example. Have u seen HD490 pro or 560S ? These measure to most like what they wanted the updated HD600 should sound like but when they hear them they like them but again go back to HD600, When u give Soundstage and More low end on 600 u lose what u like. For example Sundara ... They also measure great but sound Artificial compared to 600 or 650. Personally I love all hd 6 line and I like that they keep 600 650 and 660s2 . I also have the Blue coil whine headphones that always stop produce hd700 and 660s.
@@Tripokaridos22 Oh, hi there. I was meant to say they have changed the material used to produce the coil inside the driver of hd700 and that became the driver of hd660s. Yes I agree that hd6s are all good in a different direction, I tend to think it was the material limitation that dictates we just can not have it all. Yes, everything on a headphone contributes to the final sound output of it, the pads and filter especially, but I wish to add that human earshape is also a main contributing factor of the sound we hear. You know the bumps and ditchs inside our auricle, and when it gets pressed by the pads or unit inside, we hear differently. when we age, our auricle changes shape aswell, sometimes we gets fractured in auricle result in a bit permenent hearing lost thereafter. Now, I haven't tried neither hd490 or hd560s, but I know that HD 580 was once my favorite when I had it along with other Pioneer and Audio-technica earphones like way back in my old places. It was from there I'm sure that my taste of musicality goes with Sennheiser's headphones and I became a fan. Senheiser's EQ was consistent all along to the 800s, even the HD 700(I think it was just a failure because of missmatching the target market). But I don't agree with HD660s2, I think they've missjudged the reality by litsening to the massdrop people's opinnions and made it worse. HD600 and 650 was seperated for a reason, you can't have it both in one without adding to the cost, but that's just hd800.
I got the HD660s2 for about 350 USD just a couple of days ago. Absolutely love the sound signature of these headphones. I've only tried the HD650 in the 6 series and I totally prefer the HD660s2. These sound great for all genres and are less shouty in the treble. The bass is more substantial and the mids are smooth. They even feel slightly more comfortable than the 650. I have 0 complaints.
Sounds like I need to go audition the HD600. Have a pair of the 6XX and listen to a lot of vocals, and I definitely prefer it when the vocals aren't drown out or at-level with the background music. I want the vocals to be center-stage, and the instruments to be there just to "accompany" the vocals, like how a vase presents a flower, instruments should present the vocal to the listener. Thank you for this video! The differences with these headphones have always been unresolved for me in the back of my head.
@@scorpioassmodeusgtx1811 Thanks. I do actually have a pair of Moondrop KATO and I love it. But a lot of the times I would still need some transparency so I end up wearing my open back over-ears more.
@@zechenwei1139 Sorry no. In fact I've basically stopped using over-ears because of a neck problem. Even something as light as the 6XX fatigues my neck in under an hour, sometimes less than 30 minutes. I only use in-ears now. :(
I'm perfectly happy with my HD58X Jubilee, best of both worlds I feel like...It's 150ohms so it's easy to run, even from my macbook. Sounds great and it was way cheaper than the others. My other preferred headphone would be the HD660S. I listened to all 600 series headphones and I liked the HS660S the most. All reviews said the HD58X sounds very close to the 660S and I agree. But the HD58X is way cheaper so I'm very very happy with it :)
I love the HD58x the most also, at least in comparison to HD600., which I sold after getting the 58x Finally got some bass that I didn't get with 600 even with a good amp.
me too (sort of) . I bought HD540s 38 years ago. replaced pads and cables a couple of times, and when non replaceable strap broke, bought HD408 as their strap fitted! keep listening to others but always go back to my 540s but they are getting and looking really old now, so probably will buy HD58x soon. Maybe a wireless pair - HD??? cos I keep forgetting I'm wearing them.
This video really makes me wanna watch "Starship Troopers" with my HD600. 1997 throwback day! "Twister" was released as the first DVD ever in 1997 also, so maybe I'll pay respects to that too.
I don't own the 650s, but I do own the 660s, the 6XX and the 58X, they all have slightly different sounds, but I will tell you that none of them sound incomplete. A couple small mods to my 58x really opened them up, I did this after a Zeos review of the 58x. I love the way all of my Sennheisers sound. I recently purchased the ThieAudio Ghosts, which are currently on my head and I have been giving them the run down, pad swapping and amp swapping to find how I like them set up. So far I love the Ghosts and for the price they are punching up there pretty hard against some of the Sennheisers.
Very cool and helpful video! I hope you can extend this concept of reviewing/comparing multiple headphones from a single line to other brands as well. For example, AKG and their K7xx series (K701, K702, K712 Pro, K7XX).
Yes! The K7XX was my intro to Hi-Fi audio, and I love them! I have the Sennheiser HD660S and keep finding myself going back to my K7XX due to the soundstage. It genuinely feels like I'm listening to Chevelle live when I put them on. Lately I've been debating on getting one of the "proper" K7 series, like the 702 or 712 Pro's, but can't find good videos like this on how they all stack up against each other.
Funny timing :) I just tried the 560s, 58x, 600, 6xx, and 660s2 and again came to the conclusion that I like the 600 the best. I spent some time figuring out why and I actually think that if you overlay their frequency responses you'll see why - the 58x and 660s2 rise in the upper mids, dip, spike, then start a downtrend, while the 600 and 6xx have a more typical rise in the upper mids and a slow roll off in the treble. If makes more sense if you just look at the FR graphs. Between the 600 and 6xx I just like the 600 better, I think between those 2 it's just a matter of personal taste. The 6xx over-does it in the warmth IMO, and the 600 sounds more natural to me.
I don't know if the hd600 is the best in the 600 series line up- or even approaches modern day efforts by many other headphone manufacturers. I do know they are special by any measure, even back in 90s when they were launched. I think they are a must have in any collection of headphones. Even if they are not technically the best, the force of influence they have had on many generations of headphones produced since the 90s is considerable. And besides, I really like them.
The HD6xx have been confirmed to be an HD650 several times now by Sennheiser reps. Differences in treble can usually be explained by pad wear, with newer/ fresher pads exhibiting more treble energy, and treble fading as the pads wear in. Not a big difference but it happens. Where the 58x at? I know speculation is that it uses a "5 series driver" but impedance and driver design doesn't agree with that theory. The driver definitely isnt as capable as the 660s 150 ohm driver, but I feel like the 58x belong in the 6 series discussion. They're about 90% as good as the 6xx for an even cheaper price.
I wish he had talked about and compared against the 580 too. Even if they pretend it doesn't exist it is still the origin of the line and I would have liked to see his notes against it. I really wanted a full video with all of them.
This is exactly why almost all audio reviewers are a hack. Makers already claimed there's no difference, but placebo ridden and biased mind of audiophools just really need to disagree.
There must be some kind of internal compromise going on though else they're screwing all the Europeans (who can't get a 6XX and must buy the more expensive 650). Somewhere the 6XX uses cheaper parts, most likely the driver.
@@Harolddespui no that's what @lockjaw333 is saying, the 6XX uses the 650 drivers, that's confirmed. The cheaper stuff is, I'm guessing, headband and packaging.
Amazing video. Love the quality and the detail. Great editing. Also really informative for someone like me who has no idea which HD600 series headphone to buy. Not easy to go into a store and compare these days.
HD600 + Bottlehead Crack w/ Speedball upgrade. Incredible. I bought my HD600 20 years ago, and bought my HD650 about 18 years ago. Still prefer the HD600.
I aquired few years back some vintage headphones such as those 600ohm Beyerdynamics DT880s (studio), DT990 and DT550 and thought this is it.. after hearing the og Sennheiser HD600 and HD650 at a HifiExpo, I didn't think much of them back then. Now years later after buying the og Sennheiser HD600 and HD650 used from the flea market and giving them new pads, I was pleasently surprised. I initially thought I would have loved the HD600 with my Lehmann BCL because of the neutrality, but after hearing the HD650 with the OTL Darkvoice 336SE I was sold. Maybe it has to do with the music that I listen to and the fact that I like to crank up the volume up quite a bit.. With revealing headphones like the Beyerdynamics, my ears start to bleed after few minutes, but with the HD650, nothing, absolutely nothing. Though I have to admit that I fear I might get a hearing loss at some point with these listening levels, but I'll be damn, no fatigue what-so-ever, awesome!.. Oh, right.. So I ended up using HD650 for music, HD600 for editing and HD58x for gaming, felt that they all served a different purpose.
After experiencing the new HD 660S2 for a short time I can say, yes, I like it. It could find it's place in my collection just for listening amd enjoying music. For mixing though, I will go on to rely on the HD 600 or HD 660S, if I'm not going for my secret favourite, the Neumann NDH 30.
Not enough love to the ndh30. They break me so often. Finished Max Payne 3 2 days ago and the sudden end credits music quality surprised me. Music 7 out of 10 times moves my feelings too
@@techmed-rainer Nah, worse, at least without EQ. The HD660S sounds like someone pushed a sock between the drivers and my ears. The HD650 and HD600 sound much clearer and more linear on the treble. The hole in the treble on the 660S is just too much. The only reason someone should pick the HD660S without EQ over either the HD600 or 650 is if they are allergic to upper mids and/or treble.
I really like how you described the difference in stage and presence, I don’t own any Sennheisers. I’ve had a variety but always come back to Beyerdynamics for that background detail and width
Me too, but Senns as consumer products are targeted for people who buy usually one pair. I prefer to switch cans than EQ even just because of mood, not saying source (mastering).
Thanks for the historic overview. I wonder how it competed back then and now in this price range, after all the competition has not been standing still.
Oh, I think it all started around 1989 with the HD 560 ... at least that is the year I bought mine and discovered midrange-centric earphones at a decent price. I kept those until 2003 when I upgraded to HD580 with removed foam inside, and HD600 grills. I kept that all the way to 2021 when finally I got frustrated that the 600 series (I include hd580 as part of the 600 series) just didn't make my toe tap or my head bob, and upgraded (for me) to the Drop HD58x... very happy to have bass from a senn finally. I do eq the 2k band up a couple of db.
Sometimes I still wonder how is it possible for your channel not to have the more visibility than it has... I mean, you know what you're talking about, you're a very good performer and everything is very well made, from the video to the audio you deliver... I feel like your knowledge and, thanks to that, videos, are very valuable and entertaining! I know I'm learning a lot just by watching your videos! Keep up the good work and thank you for your dedication!
I'll add my thumbs up. I love these headphones - all my others sit in the bottom drawer. The fact you can wear them for hours without discomfort is a plus.
I still have my 1997 sennheiser hd 600, I daily drive it when gaming with the schiit hel 2 connected to my yamaha hs50m studio monitors to my 65 inch samsung curve qled 4k tv. The sennheiser hd 600 is my favorite because I really love the neutrality of the headphones but I really love the sound of analog warmth from turntables and tube amps. I love both neutrality and analog warmth at the same time. I used to like brighter headphones but not anymore since it makes my ears start to ringing.
A second-hand hd800 with tubes has basically replaced almost all of my other headphones. The amount of detail and soundstage is absolutley staggering. Not to mention the comfort. The best value audio purchase I've ever made for what it does. Never looked back...
the HD800s are brilliant except for the nasty treble peak which may or may not affect a particular listener. For me, the treble peak is what renders the HD800 to lose in the tonality/timbre category to the HD600 even tho they beat it in soundstage/imaging/microdetail etc hence why the HD600 has more NATURAL sound in my opinion. :)
The 660S2 is actually a replacement for the 660S. Both are currently available, but Sennheiser has said that the 660S will be phased out as the 660S2 replaces it.
I'd appreciate if you would list the music that you use in the description of the video. Those shots on the HD600 were amazing and the track was such a good fit
Did you try out the Neumann NDH 30? They are popular now for mixing and mastering. I would like to see that and compare them to the Sennheiser HD600 series.
I purchased a pair of 650s back in 2004. It came in a huge grey hard-case i still keep them in. i still have original cable and earpads. I ordered a new headband cushion since it looks like the original one simple disappears over time
My first audiophile headphones were the HD6XX. Bought them based on your review and recommendation . I've never been disappointed. Maybe next I will try the HD600
Does anyone hear a few low "thumps" at 9:17 - 9:21? I thought someone was breaking into my house! Great video, the HD 6 series has always been a dream of mine to own and I've never even tried them. I own a HD595 which I've largely retired due to the cable going stiff and cracks in both sides. Still hoping to listen to the HD600 / HD650 some day. I didn't even know the others existed!
Yes, the first - the HD-580 Precision. I have a pair of these in lovely condition. I also have a pair of Drop x Sennheiser HD-6XXs. I especially love the HD-6XX paired with the Bottlehead Crack and a nice DAC.
I bought HD660S2 about two weeks ago and I really enjoy it. Great and very exciting sound signature - finally HD6 with subbas! Before I own HD650 and I like it, but to be honest - they are boring to listen for me for a long period. With HD660S2 I can sit all day and my legs just dancing under the table :)
For music I prefer my HD700 the best but for everyday type of content or movie listening I usually grab my 6xx cans. Now granted my HD700 is running balanced cables and through a Schiit Gungnir DAC Mjolnir 2 hybrid amp while I am running my 6xx through a Modi dac and Asgard amp single ended set up. I also have a Sennheiser PC38X headset on the way along with a Schiit HEL amp for gaming. I like both Sennheiser and Schiit products.
I had the 6xx and liked it but didn't love it for music. I now have the 660s and enjoy it more for music, especially with sheepskin pads. At Canjam NYC 2023 I tried the 660s2 and liked it a lot and would love to direct compare with the others. I still need to try the 600. I met Axel Grell at the event, and he confirmed his HD700 driver is in the 660s/s2, but he did not do their tuning. I also met the person from Drop that made the 6xx. He said they used the exact tuning from the 650 and only changed the color way. Both gentlemen were very open and friendly to discuss these cans. Axel invited us to an after party for the Heavys headphones Kickstarter, but we had other obligations. I'm still kicking myself for not going. Lots of people were bummed you were not there. Hope to meet you next year.
The HD600 is the Porsche 996 of headphones. Both introduced in 1997, peak performance at the time of release and still relevant and beautiful by today's standards.
My favorite is the HD660S. Got it this week from the Sennheiser clearance for €180. It’s insane value. I’ve been listening to it for days now and I think I’m going to retire my HD599 and HD560S. They just sound sooo freaking good.
@@bramdriessens5942 It’s not a world of difference, but it’s noticeable. The build is also much more premium. The 599's are more comfortable though. I haven’t used my 599s since getting the 660S. Don’t buy them too expensive though! They’re not worth the original retail price of 499. Get them for €250 maximum.
@@bramdriessens5942 I once ABed a pair of 598 and Momentum 1.0 in a local bestbuy, so I guess they were weared down to a degree. 598 was good at sound stage to the momentum due to it's open back design but the same on details. having the 6s myself, 660s is my go to option when I click on Itzhak Perlman and other capriicios. In the normal days, I have my k701 for other vocals. It's too detailed for litsening to the female singing part of the music and K701 is just more relaxed for my taste.
Great review and accurate analysis by Joshua. I’ve tried 600, 6xx, 660 s2, 560s : 600 : crispness/clarity wise it was the best but very narrow soundstage and treble was piercing I felt. 600 s2 was the worst of all - lacking clarity and felt muddy. Does not justify the price as well. 560 s was good but lacked the quality of 600 series in short. 6xx : Best soundstage, impactful Bass, extremely relaxing and can listen for hours without hurting my ears. Not as crisp and clear as 600 but did not matter to me -it is the most enjoyable, best value for money and why the most popular amongst the rest (it’s not just the price, but most enjoyable for a normal listener). Anyways, these are very subjective - just my personal experience. Returned the rest and enjoying the 6xx, will buy one more of 6xx if I ever break it (4 years+ and hopefully more).
You should have included the HD580 in my opinion. One thing that gets overlooked is that the HD660S2 also includes an additional high quality balanced cable. I have an old HD580, HD650, and HD660S2. I like them all. I am planning on picking up a used HD600 to complete the collection, minus the 660S. I just picked up a Bottlehead Crack and looking forward to that listen!
I bought my HD600 headphones in about 2003/4 just after the HD650 came out. I listened to both and preferred the HD600 for the genres of music that I like, namely jazz, blues, soul, gospel, folk, and classical music, all played on acoustic instruments (except for electric guitars and electric organs in jazz, blues, soul,, and gospel), and both instrumental and vocal music in those genres. The icing on the cake was that the HD600 was less expensive than the HD650. For those genres, the HD600 driven by a decent tube headphone amp is a match made in heaven. My go to tube headphone amp for my HD600 headphones is the Cayin HA-1A (original version), which can switch from ultralinear mode for more drive and impact to triode mode for a richer and more liquid sound, and has an output impedance setting knob which enables matching to a wide variety of headphones. Also, using on the HD600 a cable with balanced connectors for the balanced outputs of my Pono player, produces great sound for a portable system. In balanced mode, the Pono player has no problem driving the HD600 headphones to levels that are more than loud enough for me without distorting. At this point, those headphone systems are definitely oldies, but goodies, but then again, so am I.😉 Recently, for improved portability, I have been using 7Hz Timeless IEMs with my Pono player, and to me they sound remarkably similar to the HD600 headphones with the Pono Player. Over the past 20 years of using my HD600 headphones, I have only had to replace the earpads and the cable once.
I've had my 600's for more than 13 years now and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's also been the only high end headphone I have ever heard. It's hard to imagine the difference between these and "higher end" headphones and I've always wondered what would truly be a step up or how much money would I have to spend. Any recommendations? What's a true upgrade for a clean flat signature sound that would shock me as much as the HD600's first did?
hd-800s might give you a wow factor. I went from HD-58X to HD-800S and it gave me a wow factor that was like 75% more wow than any of my previous purchases.
i had all of the HD6 line up! but when i hear the HD660S2 win me immediately! the original HD660 was good but not good enough mostly on high volume something missing and not sounded that good! the HD660S2 takes the place in my heart!
I managed to pick up a used 660S for £200, and a used iFi Hip-Dac for £20 (I got very lucky). I use them both every single day for listening to: music, audiobooks, podcasts, gaming (wide sound stage and detailed imaging make them very good for FPS), and even Teams/Zoom for work (this is simply due to them being set up on my desk, I often wish I couldn't hear my colleagues as clearly as I can!). The iFi Hip-Dac is a fantastic pairing for the 660S because it 'fixes' the one major criticism a lot of reviewers had - sub-bass. It has a physical hardware switch called XBASS that increases the sub-bass without distorting the rest of the sound signature. In most hobbies, gear acquisition syndrome is a powerful consumerist force to contend with, but I have virtually zero interest in upgrading to anything else. Having said that, I would like to hear an 800s to learn what I'm missing out on... But I'll avoid that temptation, because I don't wish to spend that amount of money for incremental improvements, I'd rather buy some nice speakers for my lounge instead.
HD600.. no other set of cans I’ve listened too is quite as good at making me feel that Norah has walked of the stage, come and sat on my lap and whispered “come away with me” into my ear :-)) Also, It scales so well, I’ve always said it sounds as expensive as the source that’s driving it. I’d possibly go 6xx or 650 if I could only afford a cheap .. or no.. amp
6XX and 650 is the exact same headphone. Unit variation or pad wear is what makes them sound different from one to the other. 4:09 Also, where's the HD580 at? It was the start of the series in '93, making the line-up 30 years old, not 26.
Very much enjoyed the video thank you. I personally went for the 6XX because I was able to get them for $160 from drop with a coupon. So I am very interested in picking up another 600 line. With you highlighting and comparing them right next to each other. I have a much better idea of what I want next and so on. I going to go with the OG 600. Then hopefully the 650s2 will have come down in price and I will pick them up. Again thank you for this video.
I listen to my brothers 600 and 650. To me unless I'm listening to them back to back. I can't tell the difference. I am wanting to pick up HD560s. From what I understand that's the only other Sennheiser for under $500 that sounds vastly different. What have you tried? @@zechenwei1139
Hi Josh, recently bought open box 660s2 for only £269, sounds great with the bass , just a bit better over my 6xx with custom cans bass mod, I have fitted thick 1 1/4” pads to , the 660s2 is about £399 now it was £359 only couple of weeks ago, I like 660s2 followed by moded 6xx, am now on a look out for the 600 now as you think it’s another great headphone. Regards mark
24 years ago I bought the Hd 580 I was very excited! 4 years ago I bought the Hd 600...an incredible difference! Clear, clean and powerful sound. Hd 600 my favorite headphones. Hd 600 forever.
Great review, as are all of yours I’ve seen. I have a pair of HD 650s and love the sound. I just watched your review of the Abyss Diana V2. How would you compare them with the HD650. What would I gain or lose by switching? Cheers.
Thank you for this wonderful review. I am subscribed to your channel for a long time... I own both the Hd 580 and the Hd 600. The Hd 580 since I have the Hd 600 I don’t listen anymore! I listened to the Hd 650 and the Hd 660s...I absolutely agree with your opinion... the Hd 600 is absolutely the best.
Just listened to HD600 for the first time today. I think it sounds weak, anemic where the bass needs to slam a bit but I also find it very relaxing to listen to. My amp is FIIO7. The Bluetooth one. When connected to my iMac the sound is a bit louder but still lower than HD660S, by quite a bit. I can’t listen to HD660S at max volume, while HD600 leaves me wanting more volume. Another thing I’ve noticed is that HD660S gets a little piercing on certain words. I and You. In the song Rent , by Pet Shop Boys, it gets a bit out of range. It often feels that it’s right at the edge of becoming unpleasant with many other songs, while I never noticed this with HD600,most likely because the volume doesn’t reach as high. I tried to lower the volume when I listened to HD660S, and it solved a bit of this issue but once you know it’s there, you can still hear it a bit. HD600 might be the better sounding headphone, but I still prefer the kick and move of the HD660S, even though at times it can be a bit piercing. Edit. A year later and HD660S doesn’t get much listening time because I purchased HD660S2, and it has everything I missed on the 660S. It has a warm sound that work on a vast majority of music. Except rock. I don’t find them suitable for rock as they are too warm, and it makes it feel like the treble are rolled off. So in that case, HD660S or HD600 are the better choice. For other than that, HD660S2, wins every time.
I bought the HD660S mainly for the lower impedance (the first ''portable'' unit) and although the price tag back then was a bit high for my likings, this was and still is the only low impedance solution from Sennheiser. You also get a nice wooden box for storage with the HD660S, to compensate the price tag a bit, I suppose. 150ohm is low enough for my Walkman, smartphone and even the PS5 controller.
I got the old blue 600 and also an Hd800, the musical an balanced sound is real nice on not so high end sources. The HD800 only shines when the rest is perfect.
Great overview on this classic line. With multi-application excellence and comfort in spades, it is the 6XX for me. I do think they need to re-eval their feedback & analytics as really missed the mark on the out of the gate asking price for the latest; especially when inflation will only drive others to the more affordable spectrum.
Been going down a headphone rabbit hole recently and I ended up going with HD 600. They've been incredible. It's been amazing to get such a wonderful sound out a relatively cheap setup. I live in an apartment and I don't get to crank my hifi system that much because I don't want to be a bad neighbor.
Hi great informative video, I recently bought 6xx but I done custom cans bass mod and does better on bottom end. I did but also the 660 s1 as only £259 , I tend to use it on ifi dac , using the true bass button on which it does come alive , then again I have 560 which I use on my other hi fi system, another great sounding phone . Regards mark
Definitely Sennheiser. Beyers will give fatigue with gunshots etc. They might be more accurate on paper, but I could never get used to them (the open back DT series) for gaming nor listening to music. HD650+modmic for PC and PC38X on console is still my preferred setup.
I haven't tried the 6XXs, but I replaced my HD600s with HD650s; the sound signature is better suited for the music I listen to and is much more engaging in games. Still, both are incredible headphones.
@@SebastianUllrich1990 I had it for 5 or so years too...

From one
Josh to another, thank you for your amazing videos and I’m looking forward to more spectacular videos going forward!
I love your way of making videos. So clean. Calm. Understandable.
HD 660S for 200 USD refurbished by sennheiser or HD 6xx ?
@@numbers7905 very helpful, thanks a lot !
i have all 6 line , 660s have the best imaging and biggest soundstage of them all, HD600 are the best neutral vocal kings, 650 are the smoothest , 6XX are the darkest more Midbass of them all, and 660s2 are just 660s with a bit more low end and smoother midrange.
650 are like 6XX smooth and Dark but with more energy and a bit clearer ( u should try them ) ... But ok 6XX cost way less ( for a reason )
I know they don't make or talk about the H580, but certainly you should have mentioned the still available and recent HD58X.
Fair!
@@JoshuaValour the 580 is my favorite
@@DanDhaniels I have the 6XX and the 580, I prefer the 580. I also have the 590 which measures very similar to the 650. The 590 is great.

Beyerdynamic for example is much worse on that regard, especially on their "low budget" headphones like the DT770 or DT990.
measurements at audiosciencereview even show that the 600 and 650 are essentially the same headphone, at least within unit variation.
Love them.
Excellent timing for the video! I was looking exactly this comparison and history since the release of the 660s2
I've been waiting for this comparison for years! Thank you! ...And I just ordered the 6xx based on this and DMS's continued endorsement.
Sold my HD600 and it was mistake 😭 there is something about them, something special. I will buy them again one day for sure
Another great video, and love that you lean in to the Oliver Queen vibe with the comp bow up on the wall!
I own all of them and the 600 is absolutely irreplaceable in my opinion. I grab the 600's the most BY FAR!
If u really have them all , then u know that everyone of them is irreplicable in something , for example 600 for vocals and clarity , 660s imaging -speed-soundstage-, 650 smoothness. So its all about taste.
no, 600 is jack of all trades, master of none@@Tripokaridos22
Yes Josh! Deducing the HD600 as your favorite is my conclusion exactly, and why I trust your opinions & channel. Well done.

Maybe a wireless pair - HD??? cos I keep forgetting I'm wearing them.
i have the 650, not because i liked the sound signature, but because when i bought it, no other series 6 headphone was available in my country
This video really makes me wanna watch "Starship Troopers" with my HD600. 1997 throwback day! "Twister" was released as the first DVD ever in 1997 also, so maybe I'll pay respects to that too.
Thanks Josh, great video, HD600 was indeed my intro into 'better' headphones, many have come and gone since, but these are staying on the wall!
Have you tried the curtain mod on the hd58x....really improves the hd58x even more.
HD650 black silk version - that is my favorite. Its the best of both worlds. Good body and nice treble. Had the 600 too but I prefer the 650.
Great video! I've been enjoying my 600s for years now. They get used all most every day. Timeless
Very cool and helpful video! I hope you can extend this concept of reviewing/comparing multiple headphones from a single line to other brands as well. For example, AKG and their K7xx series (K701, K702, K712 Pro, K7XX).
I was thinking the same. This would be nice to watch.
Really great video. Nice chronology for understanding the HD Sennheiser evolution and differences.
I like this approach. Fresh take on all the lineup, claims irrespective. Keep it up!
I got my HD600s in 2004. I still use them on occasion. I just replaced the headband foam and earcups last month.
Yeah I agree
Such an important video! Thanks for it :) I finally understood what's with all the variations of the HD600 series.
Music 7 out of 10 times moves my feelings too
The HD660S is a worse version of the HD660S2. The HD600 or HD650 are better than both.
@@rene837 Different, not worse.
@Rene Well, maybe according to your personal preference, that's fine. You can't judge due to some curves how they sound for other people.
I really like how you described the difference in stage and presence, I don’t own any Sennheisers. I’ve had a variety but always come back to Beyerdynamics for that background detail and width
beyerdynamic are marketing product really not worth the price
I have been using the 600 since 2013 and it is still going strong. I have tried other headphones, but always go back to the 600.
Amazing review, so dinamic, rich in information and concise.
I'll add my thumbs up. I love these headphones - all my others sit in the bottom drawer. The fact you can wear them for hours without discomfort is a plus.
I have been using HD600 for over 12 years, and still using now!
Owning all except the 660s2, I find the 660s the least muddy of the line and reach for them the most
Your intro with "voice of God" was hilarious! Made my day, thank you.
Thank you very much for excellent explanation of all sennheiser hd 600 series headphones.
The intro is so awesome! 😂
-listening with HD660S2
I am in awe your videos are fantastic mate!
A second-hand hd800 with tubes has basically replaced almost all of my other headphones. The amount of detail and soundstage is absolutley staggering. Not to mention the comfort. The best value audio purchase I've ever made for what it does. Never looked back...
If you ever plan on third-handing them, lemme know! :D
the HD800s are brilliant except for the nasty treble peak which may or may not affect a particular listener. For me, the treble peak is what renders the HD800 to lose in the tonality/timbre category to the HD600 even tho they beat it in soundstage/imaging/microdetail etc hence why the HD600 has more NATURAL sound in my opinion. :)
You mentioned the progenitor HD 580 Precision in passing, but what about the HD 58X Jubilee?
The 660S2 is actually a replacement for the 660S. Both are currently available, but Sennheiser has said that the 660S will be phased out as the 660S2 replaces it.
bought the 660S 5 days ago, super happy with them!
Similar situation, but with 660s. If you do ever get the 600, please let me know how they compare!
I didn't even know the others existed!
this is why all my yotube watching is through mono and dynamic compression filters.
Where can i get it from eu?where is the clearanse :p Cheers
How m7ch better is the 660s vs the 599? I have the 599. And am thinking about upgrading.
I’ve tried 600, 6xx, 660 s2, 560s :
600 : crispness/clarity wise it was the best but very narrow soundstage and treble was piercing I felt.
Great video, but where is the HD 58X Jubilee ???
The HD660s was selling for $230 on Amazon six months ago, did I miss out by not picking it up?
Yes.
Oof, yeah that is an insane deal.
At this point, those headphone systems are definitely oldies, but goodies, but then again, so am I.😉
Recently, for improved portability, I have been using 7Hz Timeless IEMs with my Pono player, and to me they sound remarkably similar to the HD600 headphones with the Pono Player.
Over the past 20 years of using my HD600 headphones, I have only had to replace the earpads and the cable once.
Thank you very much for explanation! I have $500 budget for new headphones and I spend it for OLLO Audio S5X instead HD660S2.
? 👍
Are u happy with s5x? Cheers
I went from HD-58X to HD-800S and it gave me a wow factor that was like 75% more wow than any of my previous purchases.
came here for the comparison but now I'd love to know how you EQ your sm7b, it sounds fantastic
i had all of the HD6 line up! but when i hear the HD660S2 win me immediately! the original HD660 was good but not good enough mostly on high volume something missing and not sounded that good! the HD660S2 takes the place in my heart!
I think you'd change your tune if you heard them... especially if you game (huge & fantastic bonus!).
@@yarbles66 heard what?

HD600.. no other set of cans I’ve listened too is quite as good at making me feel that Norah has walked of the stage, come and sat on my lap and whispered “come away with me” into my ear :-))
Also, It scales so well, I’ve always said it sounds as expensive as the source that’s driving it.
I’d possibly go 6xx or 650 if I could only afford a cheap .. or no.. amp
Lucky you, good it was not Lemmy 'whispering' 🙂
6XX and 650 is the exact same headphone. Unit variation or pad wear is what makes them sound different from one to the other. 4:09
Also, where's the HD580 at? It was the start of the series in '93, making the line-up 30 years old, not 26.
Very much enjoyed the video thank you. I personally went for the 6XX because I was able to get them for $160 from drop with a coupon. So I am very interested in picking up another 600 line. With you highlighting and comparing them right next to each other. I have a much better idea of what I want next and so on. I going to go with the OG 600. Then hopefully the 650s2 will have come down in price and I will pick them up. Again thank you for this video.
Hi! I’m on the same boat with you! I have the 6XX and I’m curious about the 600… have you tried them?
Cheers.
Goat video production. Channel Deserves like 500k subs
That cheeky zoom-out at 2:42 though.
@philipcooper8297. Drop HD58x is a low impedance solution with bass if you are OK with the midband being pulled back a little.
@@larrydunn4626 They use HD 5x series driver on 58X even if the looks are like 6 series.
THe box its not Wooden , it was nice box i have 3 of them old batches . New ones dont have box anymore.
Regards mark
what about the hd58x?
What would you recommend for someone who would use his audiophile headphone for gaming also?
The DT 770 or the HD6xx?
Definitely Sennheiser. Beyers will give fatigue with gunshots etc. They might be more accurate on paper, but I could never get used to them (the open back DT series) for gaming nor listening to music. HD650+modmic for PC and PC38X on console is still my preferred setup.
I haven't tried the 6XXs, but I replaced my HD600s with HD650s; the sound signature is better suited for the music I listen to and is much more engaging in games. Still, both are incredible headphones.
