My first car was a 1998 Sentra SE with a five speed. I still have it. It’s a great car and I’ll never get rid of it. Definitely from an era that’s going extinct, especially with a manual. It’s going strong with 250,000 miles. The car is such a staple in my family, my brother recently bought a 1995 Sentra, which was the first year of the B14. His is in immaculate condition, a real time capsule. You’ll never see a better condition base model Sentra.
Sentra owner: hmm someone is gonna come review the car Sentra owners mom: honey are you gonna clean the Nissan? Sentra owner: No, you know I don’t keep myself clean.
Hello from Thailand! I went to grad school in North Carolina 2003-2005 and this generation of Sentra was quite popular among grad students (especially international students) as it was quite cheap to buy and run, reasonably reliable and not too old, while over at law or business schools the students were driving BMW Series 3 and Subaru Imprezas.
@ thanks for the response! Yeah I miss Durham (oops.. now you know which school I went) but of course Chapel Hill was lovely. Did an internship in Asheville. Drove all over NC in my good ol’ Volvo 740, then later 240 wagon.
A good friend of mine back in 2011 had one of these, a base model without even a passenger mirror. 5 speed, lasted over 400k before it was too rusted to be safe. Ran and drove beautifully
The only Nissan I've ever owned was a 1993 Sentra SE-R and that thing was a blast to drive. Id love to see you review one of those one day. It was kinda like an economy version of the late 1980s BMW M3's in my opinion. All I know is it had no right being as good as it was for the price.
Lol, thank you! This one is hilarious 😂 I'm older and remember these. Remember seeing one broken down on I-10. And yet still, MUCH more dependable than anything today with a JATCO CVT 😂
My family had one of these when i was a kid. Surprisingly the cloth seats were pretty comfortable, a testament to the time period. Cloth seats in newer cars dont have the same thickness
If I ever meet Zack, I know for a fact that him and I would agree that driving shitboxes are super fun!😂😊 I laughed during the whole video!!! Driving a shitbox just makes you giggle and laugh like hell. You can dog the living daylights out of shitbox but they just will not die.😂😂😂😂
I had a Hunter Green 1998 Maxima SE with tan leather and Bose audio during college. Served me very well those 4 years. Ran like a champ. It had 170k miles when it was given to me after High School. After I graduated college back in 2011, I parked it in my Dad's garage with it reading 220k miles and it sat for years because I had bought a new car and my Dad wanted to keep my old Maxima. Long story short, in 2022 my Dad and I sorted it out and got it back running on the road. We sold the car to my aunt and uncle to give to my little cousin for his 1st college car.
@@SouthsideKidd550ours was hunter green as well, but it was a base model, so the seats were cloth. That car was my cousin's first car as well. Her mom and dad gave it to us. We were so thankful, because we went without a car for three years, and it was tough.
In my home country, these were called nissan sunny. before leaving there, i still saw 2 of these being used as taxis. they probably had north of 1 million kilometers judging by the fact that Taxi N16 Sunny and E150 corollas from 2010 are already at 750-800k kilometers. Those durable nissans are long gone unfortunately.
Still hope you can find a Canadian market 05-06 Nissan Xtrail. Stick shift, selectable awd and lock, huge sunroof and better options that many economy cars nowadays. If I end up with a third I'll let ya know!
0:38 LMAO 🤣 thanks for featuring my car ollie nissan again as a cameo in your sentra montage. I was gonna say B12 cars look more classy than B14 sentras. By the way zack my car Ollie Nissan looks slightly different now with new wheels and other small improvements. I be open to let you drive my car again and maybe update the review if you want. I upload videos on my channel about it.
My Ex had a 2 door 1988 ish Sentra coupe that was her college car, very basic not even sure it was a 5 spd manual might have been 4. I am the current owner of a 2004 4 door, with 133K, which I bought from my Mom when she stopped driving. I am hoping to get it to 200K. Those 80s to early 2000 Sentras are solid and I see lots of 2002-2006 era Sentras still on the road.
i want to see you review a 5 speed 4th gen maxima, i had 3 of them and planning to get another one once i get my cdl and make some money, i love those cars so much
I remember when these were brand new, you could buy a strip model brand new for less then 10k! I almost bought one, but opted for the 1994 2d Sentra LE (black, loaded), used at the time.
fyi the b14(96-2000) model is the same as the b13 (91-95) in terms of engine and transmission, they are also made in mexico but known as the nissan tsuru.
Back when i was in auto tech school we went out to the track with the race team and were able to run our cars down the strip. One of the guys had this car and it ran an abysmal 19.5 at like 70 mph
Cars in that era had metals in the panels which were prone to rusting and corrosion, something that you could have pointed out in the video. But still a great review nonetheless.
Damn dude, this is the kind of car reviews I'm into...shitboxes from the 90s! The SR Sentras (not this one) have such a weird little cult following that you gotta love. I had an '02 SE-R Spec V for a while and it was super fun to thrash, but also almost always broken, and it only had like 60k miles. Good shit.
I had the GA14DE on my first car. And we had a Primera P10 for many years with the GA16DS. I always loved the sound of the DS! These were not as popular or rather famous for tuning like the SR or others but these can run forever with just absolut basic maintenance (or even non 😄). And the GA16DNE was still made until 2017 in Mexico! Oh, so you still have to drive the "fake" 200SX. 😆 Yes and the cuts were really overdone! Even after the profit was there again.
I'm guessing the Almera we had in Europe at the time was most likely built on the same platform and also shared the 1.6 liter engine with the US market Sentra. They were pretty much bullet proof. However, sadly, you'll hardly ever see one anymore as they were very prone to rusting like Japanese cars in general in that era.
I knew two people that had that generation of Sentra and they were ok with them. One had some electrical problems traced to water getting into wiring connections. Both complained about ride quality. At that time I had 95 Accent and Sentra was essentially same car but bit larger and better build. Previous generation of Sentra was better but it had mechanical issues or so I'm told. Too bad Nissan stopped selling economy cars in Canada. They still sell them in other countries.
My cousin had a 96 and drove it from 1997-03 until she got rear ended in college. The car was pretty roomy in the back as an elementary kid, and it seemed to be all that you made it out to be.
The car I grew up in. Never got to drive it but eventually got an Altima same year. Poor thing got decapitated while I drove to the gas station. 🖤 R. I. P.
This era of Nissan cars were excellent. Extremely reliable. I had a 1999 Altima that out of pure foolishness i traded because it was approaching 10 years old. I'm certain that car is still running somewhere. I wouldn't touch a new Nissan
You dont see these around and their underrated i actullyblike these better than the ones from 00 to 06 sentra even though they had those monster engine's in some of them
As a delivery driver these very disposable, reasonably fun to drive beaters are essential. I'd be redlining the hell out of it every stop. I'd of course give it an afternoon of cleaning, I couldn't stand driving a car t h a t nasty.
Context , this car existed when Honda was in it s prime, selling arguably the best cars on the market with Toyota. You would have had to been a fool to buy one of these rolling turds from new over a 98 Civic.
The Sentra was badged as the Sunny in Britain & Ireland. Slightly different rear end styling here,to the American built models. We got the Japanese models.
I have a 1998 Nissan Sentra GXE with a 5 speed manual transmission. It has no rust. Would you still be interested in driving mine? I am in Alabama, so I think I am far away from you. I never filled out the form since I figured I was way out of your way.
Get your hands on a 1999 Altima 5 speed manual🎉 that's a poor man's sports car that can still be economic. It's nothing like the newer ones . the ride is solid and heavy like an S class with Porsche suspension🎉
If you were you to ask me what the worst car I've ever driven in 30 years,, I wouldn't hesitate to say 1997 NIssan Sentra! Genuinely made me sad to drive this for 3 days as a rental.
Jezus, i have a beater Toyota corolla with 260,000 miles on it and i at least keep it and my other cars clean, i don't drive around in filth. Soo nasty!
The best thing about these is how cheap they are to acquire and run. $400 sounds right, it's ugly as sin, disgusting as the backside of your toilet, and still has an 88% of you reaching your destination (relatively) on time. More modern cars hold their value too well while actually failing to deliver value in the form of reliability.
The era of NISSAN I’ll take anyday
“It still runs and drives.” Technically accurate.
Technically correct, the best type of correct
That car has never seen a vacuum lol
Or cleaning products in general.
Probably true. I did clean it up pretty nice before I rehomed it.
Heck YA, still see quite a few of these on the road today. This is Back when Nissan still had a soul!!
Zack, your excellent camerawork really highlights how disgusting this car's interior is.
i doubt the owner cares, it's almost 30 years old and super beat

@ thanks for the response! Yeah I miss Durham (oops.. now you know which school I went) but of course Chapel Hill was lovely. Did an internship in Asheville. Drove all over NC in my good ol’ Volvo 740, then later 240 wagon.
I'd say this is a very representative example of most Sentras still left on the road. No straight panels, rusty, dirty, but still running.
mine has no rust, same year, 5 speed...but has been in a few accidents and both rear panels dented
Oooh baby. That thing needs a valve cover gasket BADLY.
It certainly did! I fixed that (and cleaned it) before it went to a new home.
I grew up in a 95 XE. And learned how to drive in it. It was embarrassing because of the burnt paint, but it was super reliable.
This is my car. It's this green, dented little thing. I call it The Gremlin and blast the theme to the 80's film "Gremlins"- best car ever
I love these reviews of economy cars! Hope to see more of them!
A good friend of mine back in 2011 had one of these, a base model without even a passenger mirror. 5 speed, lasted over 400k before it was too rusted to be safe. Ran and drove beautifully
This is what you drive when the aspirational move is a clapped out Altima with 4 different tires and zero maintenance over the course of 240k miles
The only Nissan I've ever owned was a 1993 Sentra SE-R and that thing was a blast to drive. Id love to see you review one of those one day. It was kinda like an economy version of the late 1980s BMW M3's in my opinion. All I know is it had no right being as good as it was for the price.

I learnt how to drive on a 97 Sentra just like this but in manual
Thanx for the memories
My family had one of these when i was a kid. Surprisingly the cloth seats were pretty comfortable, a testament to the time period. Cloth seats in newer cars dont have the same thickness
I had a 97 and it was an amazing car.

My 94 year old mom (rip) had one too- bullet proof- she took out 3 car mirrors in the neighborhood b4 we took her dl away- 😂😂
We had a 1997 Maxima passed down to us from our family. It had well over 200k miles and was totaled twice and still running like a top.

A popular generation of the Sentra in the Philippines along with the B13 Sentra
This generation was a letdown from the prior generation. It isn't the worst generation, though.
What would you say is the worst generation
It is the most reliable gen...but the most boring pre Renault gen.
