Hayes essentially cost the Cowboys the 1967 NFL Championship in the Ice Bowl. The Packers defensive backs noticed that if Hayes left the huddle and lined up with his hands tucked into his pants he was just a decoy. If he left the huddle and lined up with his hands out in the open, he was the intended target. For most of the second half they ignored him when he lined up with his hands in the pants and basically played 11 on 10 football.
@@dwightlove3704 Yes, some of the others did, but that isn't the point. He was the only one on the playing field with his hands in his pants while actually playing the game.
I'm not a Cowboys fan, but, along with Bob Lilly, Walt Garrison and Don Meredith, Bob Hayes was a player on that team and in football I had great admiration for.
Jerry Rice is the leading pass receiver of all time. He was known for his healthy lifestyle and training regimen. I would like to think that receivers would learn something from the lives of Hayes and Rice about how to maximize success in this position.
Bob Hayes was also good for telegraphing running plays to the Packers defense in the Ice Bowl. They noticed he would come to the line of scrimmage with his hands tucked in his pant waist when Meredith handed off.

The passing game wasn't sophisticated back then. Wide receivers averaged huge numbers compared to today, because passing was almost a desperate, all-or-nothing move. That's why sprinters were so good then, and don't matter now.

Great story. Visuals were good also but some of the no. 22s were Emmit Smith and not Bob Hayes. I remember watching Bob when I was younger when he was playing for the Cowboys. Always exciting. I always remember him running down a db from a long distance after an interception of another receiver. He was insanely fast on that play but it is never brought up. Maybe someone can reference it.
I remember when the Giants signed Henry Carr, an Olympic sprinter himself who was advertised as the second fastest human. Bob Hayes showed everyone that it was true. 👀😉😂👍🇺🇸
Both Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi were assistant coaches on the staff of the NY Giants and both wanted to coach the Giants when Jim Lee Howell retired. Unfortunately for the Giants, Howell was promised one more year by the owner and both Landry and Lombardi were given offers by other teams leading into Howell's last year. The Cowboys and Packers became legendary franchises and the Giants fell into mediocrity.
The Cowboys were dumb to not let him compete in the 1968 Olympic trials and maybe go to Mexico City! What fantastic publicity for the team when he was given a victory parade in Dallas!
Bob Hayes would tell the quarter back "just throw it in the left side of the field i will be there to catch it. From what i heard he said that to the quarterback many times. And he would be there to catch the football.
I really enjoyed watching this profile. I remember watching him when I was a small boy & I wanted to be just like him. An observation though -- There are several still shots in the video which show the other legendary #22 standing along side Troy Aikman. A minor error in the story of a major life!!!
As a youth, and a Dallas Cowboys fan. I got to see Bob Hayes play in person. He could fly down the field. I wrote this even before the narrator used the term "fly" down field.
Watched Bob Hays and Homer Jones of the NY Giants run a foot race during warmups one Sunday in the Cotton Bowl. Guess who won? Enjoyed the vintage video, but was a little confused why Troy Aikman and Emmit Smith were in a few of the photos.
Think about this, the NFL Hall of Fame requisitions bronze likenesses of various players. The artisans who create these likenesses get it right. Why the hell bronze creators of the Allen Iverson, Dwyane Wade, Cristiano Ronaldo, etc. likenesses can't give it right?
@KorithStoneheart Cowboy's don't formally retire numbers, but they do informally. Their hasn't been #12 since Staubach. #8 since Aikman or #74 since Lilly (not positive about that). Hayes made HOF after Emmitt was drafted and given #22. Probably reason why.

Great Video
Thanks man....
He's the reason zone defense was started.
Another snub for Hayes he was denied the chance to be among the TOP 100 PLAYERS IN NFL HISTORY.He was the reason why Randy Moss made it on the list.
to: GA of NFL - @7:54 and @19:26, That is EMMETT SMITH, not BOB HAYES.
Why show a pic of aikman and smith at 7:47?
Bob is still considered the fastest man to have ever play in NFL
He is my dad's first cousin that's why I'm a cowboy fan for life
He was so fast he couldn’t catch the ball. His nickname was “Oops” as I recall.
sSSTOP HATIN RACIST 😅😅😅😅
Watched Bob Hays and Homer Jones of the NY Giants run a foot race during warmups one Sunday in the Cotton Bowl. Guess who won?
Enjoyed the vintage video, but was a little confused why Troy Aikman and Emmit Smith were in a few of the photos.
I know some of you believe that all black men look alike. Emmitt Smith is not Bob Hayes.
Now let the Dallas Cowboys complete honoring him by retiring number 22
Unlike most teams they don't retire numbers , they do the Ring of honor induction instead .
That would be a huge insult to Emmitt Smith unless they retired it in BOTH their names.
8 years too late. Bob should have heard the cheers in Canton.
I grew up watching Bob Hayes destroying the NFL!❤😂
Awesome!
Good question! 😅
Be careful about hyperbole. Hayes broke one 100 yard record, and tied another.
Cause of yards to meters, time wise. Yes be careful.
Why are you showing Emmitt Smith?
Yes, Editor's mistake. We are trying to improve with every new video. Thanks for Watching and noticing it. 😃
One of those photos was of Emmitt Smith, not Bob Hayes. Both wore #22.

BLACK POWER
You had several photos of Emmitt Smith, wrong Cowboy #22.
I can't believe #22 wasn't retired by the Cowboys for Hayes
@KorithStoneheart Cowboy's don't formally retire numbers, but they do informally. Their hasn't been #12 since Staubach. #8 since Aikman or #74 since Lilly (not positive about that). Hayes made HOF after Emmitt was drafted and given #22. Probably reason why.

I still say that they should have retired #22 with the Cowboys after him. Every hs and college receiver wanted to have #22.
ScottArmour, I thought that I WAS THE ONLY ONE who thought that Bob Hayes was the, FASTEST HUMAN BEING EEEEVER. Just like you referred to, BOB HAYES WOULD HAVE DEMOLISHED USAIN BOLT.-PERIOD
How many times you need to tell us a Bob Hayes revolutionized football
I'm still waiting for the ( Bolt) to join football with the Empire .
Yeah but you don’t mention the meets he couldn’t run case of his race
He should have been a first ballard HOF, but they punished him for his life off the field!
true,..
I became a Bob Hayes fan after the 1960 Tokyo Olympic. Then he became my idol. When he turned to football I became a Dallas Cowboys fan. The best of days for me. What I mean is I began to love football as an obsession. From the pros I got interested in college football. Bear Bryant and Knute Rockne and all the greats. Bob Hayes began my love for this sport. I owe him so much as the most important sport influence in my life. May he and his family and loved ones be well and loving his contribution. God bless all people who care about this excellent soul.
@@paavoviuhko7250 He was in the '64 Olympics in Toyko. The '60 Olympics was in Rome
Ameen...
enjoyed the look back at the good old days except you used the NFLs all time leading rusher in two of your images. the wrong 22
l wonder if Bob Hayes could outrun Usain Bolt?
It would be really close. Bob never raced on synthetic track. He was also a football player FIRST! Imagine if his only sport was track!
Did he sell speed?
Dorsett made everybody forget about Bob.🤷🏼
Dorsett was NEVER called the fastest man alive!
@ Nor was Bo!
@15:57 football isn't bigger than the olympics 😂
They should have retired his jersey. They will be hard pressed to find a faster football player. R.I.P. Bullet Bob.
Why do you have Emmitt Smith and The Triplets in this video? #22 was worn by Emmitt Smith as well, he is not Bob Hayes!
WTF are they showing Emmitt and Aikman. Totally different players.
Yes, Editor's mistake. We are trying to improve with every new video. Thanks for Watching and noticing it. 😃
Can’t believe you showed pictures of the other great 22 for the cowboys, Emmitt Smith. They are not the same player 😂
