Learn scale paterns for notes. He's basicly explaining qhat makes a chord, which is a minimum of 3 notes (the root, which is whatever the name of the chord is, then the 3rd and 5th note in the scale)
I've been playing off and on for about 29 years of my life. Never took lessons learned to read tabs in the 90s off the very first of internet sites like Harmony Central and Ultimate Guitar Tabz that came out later. Much if them totally wrong. Lots that were totally right. Learned by playing notes that I could recognize from songs and patterns. I can pick up a guitar and play lots of songs and can tear ass on some solos. I'm 40 amd semi retired and I'm dedicating a lot of time to learn all the things I skipped. I worked a lot. Had probably 50 guitars or more over the years went through drugs and hard times and periods of not playing. I've spent the last 3 months getting my speed and abilities up to where I think they should be and tonight I begin music theory... wish me luck. My goal is to be on a stage no matter the size playing all the great songs that motivated me to begin with.
this is the most helpful guitar video I have watched. Ive really been stuck in the powerchord/minor pentatonic rut and I think this info is gonna help me out tremendously.
Hi Cary ,I like this gospel lesson. Please do more of these if you can. I usually play in church and I am trying to learn some more gospel techniques . thank you please continue these great lessons.
I literally just look at a poster I have of all the note on the fretboard and do this exact same thing. Learning the relationships between notes and how They are spread along the fret board. It's great practice. It is confusing but once u get it you get it...
Cant say i perfectly know theory but somehow ive been using alot of these techniques in my regular playing without thinking about it...kinda neat....i can say I've learned to connect my solos and make it sound musical instead of just random scales...
after 3 years of youtube learning only, this is the first time ive actually been inspired to look furthur into it. i love almost being in the matrix lol. what a time to be alive
Such an awesome way to teach!! Sort of a story of an adventure in discovery, which is probably one of the best ways (if not best) to interest the student so they will learn, and want to learn! Want to learn more. Without 'want' you can't really learn in any useful manner.
I'm sure a lot of people who watch this are going to realize they already know quite a bit that they didn't know was theory. It's like that moment when algebra finally makes sense and you realize you've been using it your whole life.
this guy is casually the best theory teacher in the world, and here he is, available for free. PS: Day like 7 of asking for Kerry's song from Cyberpunk 2077
When MY guitar mentor refers to HIS guitar mentor for music theory, I am gonna sub him for sure. And btw, Marty, your mentor is cool and amazing just like YOU (Marty you are the greatest guitar mentor one can ask for, I wish I could have got lessons from you IRL !!!). 😁
The pack of cards analogy was really brilliant. Thinking about it objectively there's no way you could recall every card in a 52 card deck if it were random, but because you know the patterns you can name every single card in the deck 100% of the time. Same thing with music theory.
@@inferiorpatty You know that in a deck of cards there are 4 suits, In each of those suits is 13 cards, just knowing that pattern, you could name all 52 cards in a deck individually without memorizing them.
This is so much better than so much of what’s out there. That you can take some basic premises and then extrapolate forward to unlock the fretboard is really cool.
Curiosity is actually the primary element you need to get this stuff. A little info, a lot of curiosity and some dedicated time set aside to really see it under your fingers.
I don’t know if I should just give up on learning guitar. I’ve spent hours trying to understand music theory. No one explains it in a way that makes sense to me. Nothing at all makes sense
just learn the open easy chords and play a few dozen easy songs like "knocking on heaven's door" etc don't worry about theory until you can play a bit.
finally, some music theory simplified to the point where I think "hey, maybe I *CAN* get this". thank you, Chris. and thank you, Marty for the intro to your mentor. good of you to share.
Dude, I’ve learned so much from you man. I took a lesson recently for music theory and this guy just overloaded me with information and left me hardly anything to work on. He might say it’s my fault but I just wasted 60 bucks and an hour of my life for hardly anything. Your lessons rocks tho. Thanks. Ps I already can jam pretty good and just wanted to learn more. 😢
I never knew Walter White knew so much about music theory. Really appreciate you posting this. For many of us this totally accessible approach to music theory is incredibly helpful.
heres some more theory, all major chords consist of 3 notes P.S. music theory is what builds songs, solos, duets, etc. music theory isn't evil, it's actually what builds music. in fact a lot of improvised solos these days are based off of scales.
Marty I have a cool guitar recommendation for you! It’s called the Epiphone ES 333. My personal favorite is the Tom Delonge model. It looks and sounds great! I think you’d love that model.
Only practiced a few scales as far as music theory goes so this was my first video and this dude is all over the place. Could keep up until about half-way through and then he's jumping all over the fretboard, throwing all kinds of information out. Wayyyy too much info too quick. I had this experience with another guy that has been playing for ten years when I was practicing for 3 weeks: he was acting like all these things he was doing was so simple..."just do it like this flying from C to G". Point is...what may seem pretty basic from a pro's perception is like throwing hundreds of jigsaw puzzle pieces at someone and expecting them to see the picture right away. I probably missed a few steps before getting here anyway, like memorizing the fretboard first. That would help a lot before watching this video.
I've found that the stickers you can put on your fretboard are great for memorizing too. I bought some off Amazon and put one set on 1 acoustic and 1 on an electric. It's helped..
I’ll be honest with you. All the notes letters and #s are not it for me. I just want to fully emerge myself to playing and listening to music, while staying creative and making my own music on the guitar. I don’t even want to learn anything I want to just feel the music
THIS is the first time I see a "class" on music theory that is "easy" and with a so kind and understanding teacher I will no longer see music theory as a bucket of hard things
Appreciate the video very much but I get completely lost at the 8:36 mark when bar chords look to be introduced. I don’t see the first third and the fifth in that finger grouping. I know it’s a E shape chord but on the root of the A which now makes it an A chord (e shape but A bar chord) it’s the other three fingers I can’t seem to place. I feel I’m so close but can’t piece it together
I watched but I’m still so confused on what’s going on it looks like he’s just putting his hands in places and saying what chord it is could someone explain
My brain just turns to mush when I work on theory, but on that same note I tend to bounce around a bit too much instead of sticking with one course or resource.
I started guitar a year ago. All I do is find Marty teaching a song I like. I'll do my best to copy what he's doing. Sure I can play a song that I have practiced. I can find easy chords, I have fun but I still don't really know what I'm doing. I don't read sheet music, tabs confuse me. This year I'm gonna read books and listen to guys like Marty's mentor here. I'll never audition for Motley Crue, I'm not in it to be a rock star. I just like music and I'm fascinated by the guitar. I never knew heavy metal guitarists are basically modern blues guitarists.

And to think he’s teaching me my first lessons in theory is exactly why Marty is one of the best. An incredibly approachable and knowledgeable guitar player to learn from. Cheers to you Marty!
No. The way he teaches isn’t the greatest. He needs to get to the point and then explain why. Instead he’s acting like he’s on Sesame Street and your trying to follow but your not sure where he’s even going with any of it because it’s taken him forever to get to the point. And by the time he gets there you forgot everything he just taught you.

This is pretty tough still to comprehend :(

your very first music theory lesson! yet it is missing so many foundational concepts my guy im so confused

Hands down, Chris is one of the best guitar teachers, on and off youtube.
