I like how you narrated this. I'm very particular so it's definitely a compliment.
Live your stories an you r a wonderful teller!! Your voice keeps my attention and that’s a hard thing !!!! 😂great Job Happy I found u !! ❤
Hurting/killing children who look to their parents for protection is one of the most awful crimes a person can commit.
amen
The worst crime
Absolutely!! Smfh!
I agree. I can’t ever understand it. Part of living in a fallen world.
Absolutely. My bff was married to the guy who injected his own child with HIV, to get out of paying child support. That child is a grown man in his 30s, doing wonderfully, an advocate for people with HIV. He wasn't "cured" but his levels are undetectable. His father has been denied parole 3x now.
People underestimate the horrors that hide in those mountains we call home.. so sad
Agreed
You don't have to go to the mountains to find those horrors. I found them right here in the city and went to court to get that boy out of that sick home and away from his psycho stepmother.
It wasn't a comparison @@margitwes6495
You are absolutely correct! I have a feeling this is just one of many stories like this! Patricia Gambino Harrington
Agree
I bet when you were a kid, you were the one with a flashlight, pointed at your face, around the campfire, late at night, telling the best scariest stories! And everyone was scared to go to sleep! Lol
Love it! 🙈
My dad was the best storyteller I ever heard. I learned from sitting on the floor at the foot of his recliner listening to him tell stories of his life, we had no internet, no cable, no cell phones, but I traveled the world, met villains, heroes, and saints, thru his stories. I hope a small part of his legacy of storytelling lives on thru these stories.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Truely awesome! ♥️ Thank you for sharing that with us. Like father, like son.
@@TheAppalachianStorytellera part of his legacy absolutely lives on through these stories. More importantly, his legacy lives on through you And the stories you tell.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I learned from my Grandparents. Grandpa told funny stories like green jello was frog eggs, rabbit poo balls were smart pills and he swore he saw a mermaid in Fla. Grandma told of her life and things in Brevard NC.
@theldawood84 if he went to Weeki Wachee, he most certainly did see mermaids! I went to high school with some of those mermaids. And there was dinosaur just up the road from there... good stories, keep them alive!
My mother was prepared to abort me in 1961. Abortion was illegal back then. Luckily I survived. But I grew up with two evil stepsisters who tried to murder me at least three or four times. My father told me about the first attempt when the stepsisters put me out on the back porch in the middle of winter to die. I was only two months old. My parents went out in the night and left me in the care of the 11 year old and eight year old stepsisters care. Some care alright. My father told me about that when he found me on the porch I was alive but I was the colour blue. I almost died from that murder attempt because I developed pneumonia I was a very sick little baby and I almost didn’t make it. There were many attempts to get rid of me through my childhood by my two stepsisters, one of them died from an aggressive cancer 10 years ago. But my mother was the cruelest . When a mother wants to murder her baby and hates the child so much that she got her own offspring to do her dirty work, it’s a terrible thing. She had the option her and my father to give me up at the hospital. She wanted to but my father refused to sign the papers. I have always wondered what kind of a life I would have had if they had of let me go. So yes, I know all to well how cruel families can be. You are more likely to be killed by a family member than a stranger in fact 70% more likely. Rest In Peace little Roy. 🌹🌹🌹
Wow, what a story you have, thank you for having the courage to share that with us, bless your heart ❤️
You are courageous.❤
Yea those parents and other family members don’t deserve respect or empathy!
😢😢
Omg the HELL YOU HAD TO ENDURE WAS BEYOND EVIL 😢 YOU MUST HAVE BEEN TERRIFIED LITTLE BOY BULLIED BY THESE MONSTERS WHYYYYYY DID SOMEONE NOT REPORT THIS OR DID FAMILY NEIGHBOURS AS USUAL TURN BLIND EYE I HOPE NOW YOUR IN A SAFE PLACE HAPPY HEALTHY AND SURROUNDED BY LOVE BLESS YOU 🙏🤝🏻🙏✌️
RIP Roy Rickey! The step mom got what she deserved. Thanks for sharing this story!
Yes Sir, RIP Roy
Such a sad and tragic story.
Child abuse is child abuse no matter when it happened. People like that are the schum of the earth.
The stepmother was truly a wicked witch.
Well said
She actually had BLACK eyes??? Is that possible?
@@oooh19 No more possible than her black hair turning white in 4 years just because she was locked up. Most stories like this are about 50% false. Too bad they never said anything else about the sister.
Well peoples hair DOES go gray or white but I’m guessing in her case it wasn’t due to aging but stress
Scum
It's beyond my understanding how anyone can kill a child or an adult for that matter. A child's worse tho because they are too little to defend themselves.
Heartbreaking. Rest in eternal peace little Roy. 🙏 🕊
The ending was something else!! 😟
Thank you. Love your voice and stories!
Thank you ❤️
way to make this about you
That’s the most disturbing story you’ve told. So SAD 😞
I’d destroy someone if they hurt my kids or grandkids.
It was hard for me to tell this story. But Roy Rickey story had almost been lost to time and no one has told his story. RIP Roy ❤️
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller RIP Little Roy ❤️. A good man kept your story alive. God love you JD.
JD you gave that child a place in this world for as long as people hear this story. And things like that happen more than people know. Many a step parent was the end of several children lifes. Being by like of food or neglect or just simple spite for the child. I'm glad you told the story.
@@TheAppalachianStorytellerIm here to hear Roy's STORY....no matter how bad....
I totally agree with you 💯
This should be a movie!! I was on the edge of my seat
Thank you so much! This is the only time this story has ever been told.
That's so sad, poor little guy. May he be resting in paradise 🕊 🌟.
Thank you for his story.
RIP Roy
It's so sad when children are abused and lose their lives as the results of sins and crimes of those who are suppose to love and protect them. It's a sad story, but one that needed telling. Thanks JD.
Amen my friend
Wow! How sad about little Roy😢. My friend you have the gift of telling stories!
Thank you Marie, RIP Roy
Good Lord, I got goosebumps watching this one JD! You bring these stories to life like no one else, friend! Enjoy your weekend and I'll see ya on the next one!
Thank you brother, have a great Saturday!
Its sad that one parent or both have the nerve to harm or kill their child. The stepmother was evil and deserves what she received. Thank you JD.

Step parents are the worst. How people can put their babies in harms way then choose to not believe their own child when they plainly see the truth of it. It's one of the evils in this world we have to fight. See something, say something. Period. If you don't you're guilty as well.

I have never understood how anyone could hurt a child. Good telling of a horrible story.
True evil walks this earth
You articulate these stories so captivatingly! Thank you. 👏🏻👏🏻🇦🇺

I thought the ending was too good to be true. Cold hearted people usually don't take their own lives. I could find no reports of Eliza Rickey's death/suicide@TheAppalachianStoryteller
So heart breaking story those poor children had to endure so much cruelty it's ashame what they Had done to the boy, that broke my heart, Thank you for sharing this story

I absolutely LOVE youre way of storytelling about old Appalachian tales . Thank you for this with the photos too ❤
Thank you so much, my friend. Appreciate you.
Great job with this one! It is a story that very few people know about outside of the Carter County, KY area, but needed to be shared. Again, great job!

@@TheAppalachianStorytellerI agree with Kimba. I miss sitting around on Sunday nights listening to scary stories on the radio with my oldest sister. This brings back a lot of memories. These stories are better though bc you've got the voice for it and THEY'RE TRUE!!!!
Still happening all over our country(and other countries). Yes, very sad.
Well said my friend
Some people just thrive on cruelty and drama, they generally crave turmoil and want to incite bad reactions or get negative attention.
They usually then blame the people they hurt, deny any wrongdoing, and play the victim.
Well said my friend
Sadly you are right. Some ppl are professional victims.
Thank you JD for that story not being as scary as I thought it was going to be. It was more pitiful sad. That crazy woman ended as she should have. Live you channel.
Thank you Melissa!
The Voice and the way you become the character, it is just good story telling. I remember people who around the campfire could do pretty good too. Especially at Halloween time, make chills go down your back.

I remember watching television with my granny back in the 70’s and a news story came on about a child murdered by their family and my granny then said something I have never forgotten…she said, “That is nothing new, back when I was a kid, they had tractor accidents to take care of bad kids or kids they didn’t want.”
Wow
Oh, JD what a real horror story. That poor little innocent. We will never know what drives human beings to such extreme behaviour, although it probably begins with childhood re flags. Thank you for keeping all manner of stories alive, so we may remember the children who were removed from the joy of living in such terrible ways. Thank you from Ruth x
Roy's story shouldn't be forgotten
How sad to think this happened more often than anyone knows, and they got away with it. You can be sure they will have their reckoning with GOD. Great story telling. Stay safe and GOD bless

Wow, that was an intense story… very well told!
thanks so much
Ok WOW, I wasn't expecting that ending. 😮 Great Story and Narration.
Thank you very much!
Roy's father although he was found not guilty did not protect his son or daughter.
He didnt show any emotion when he saw his son hanging from the tree.
Disgraceful father!
agreed
Some people are just detached from life...I am not defending him, because he saw his son hanging from a tree and not a tear was shed, didn't even attempt to cut his own son down, and didn't say a word until asked, unfortunately some people never develop a bond with their children and he was apparently one of those people. I say this because I have an uncle who was this way, he was a workaholic, amazing provider for the family, they wanted for nothing, but never loving with my cousins. And came from the Appalachians....hmmmm
Glad to hear she didn't go peacefully in her sleep. But what happened to the boarder? He was still guilty of trying to cover it up. And didn't go through with testifying.
He got life in prison
Thank you for the answering my question. And as always, great storytelling.
That’s tragic , sad and horrifying. People do some rather terrifying things to their children, these are people who don’t deserve to be parents.
agreed
New subscriber from bonnie Scotland. Fantastic stories - and i thought no one told stories better than the scots 😉😜
Welcome Margaret!
I didn't find any fault with Mr Ricky either except that if a man lets another man border in his home he should expect trouble because it's coming. I have no pity for Mrs Ricky what happened to her is just. Seems to me she tried to break all of the 10 commandments. My heart goes out to the boy who is dead but suffers no more and to the little girl who suffers evermore. Sad story.
Well said James
I wonder what happened to her when she went to live in the foster home. Foster homes can be terrible for children too but it’s just better than her actual family situation! She’d be really elderly if still alive!
@@oooh19 not sure she went to a foster home, but one thing is certain. She would have been truly traumatized.
Board not border

Thank you so much, Mary. It is a tragic story, but one that definitely needs to be remembered.
I knew not a thing about Appalachia when I visited, but the beauty of it, didn’t make it less creepy. I’ve always been sensitive to environments and I just wanted to experience what I was told was one of the most beautiful backdrops this country has. I’d already been to Utah and Joshua Tree, and the Dakotas. But, the eeriness of this area came through me in such a way that I HAD to research and it was scarier after then during. So much dark history. Such a large expanse of land and a lot of it is just dark. This story is just along the lines of all I have already read about this area.
Thanks for sharing
Evil. Just Pure Evil.
yes sir, This story is proof that evil walks among us
However, I also believe there is just as much good to combat the evils in this world. In my opinion, whether in this life, or the next, vengeance will be done by the Lord's will. Nevertheless, you have a talent for telling stories in this format. Very good job, God Bless Brother.

If Roy was taking the cow to the spring, did it just happen to wander back home? Is that something cows do? That would’ve been a hole in their story from the start.
I am not sure but possibly if the cow needed milking it may have automatically went where it was usually done?

This is a new story to me. You did a wonderful job of telling it. Where did this happen? If it had been in my home area of Kentucky, most of the adults would have been talking about a sorry woman like that. Some of the women may have tried to run her off (in fear that she would steal their men).
