I wish you would look into a murder in Golds Valley, Ky in may of 1950. Vernon Lee Webster was convicted of the murder of Nelson Kinman a store merchant in Golds Valley, Grant County Ky. As a father, nothing gets me more upset than when a child is abused... Or worse. The bible says (paraphrasing) eye for an eye. Everyone has a right to be treated fairly, but NOT when it comes to intentionally harming a child. Treat them the way they treated the child. It may not be a popular opinion, but I still feel like they didn't get what they deserved.

When you think about all the good ones out in the world who would have loved and cherished her, not being able to have children of their own they let evil people keep breeding and abusing their little ones. Makes no sense at all?

It's amazing to me that tragedies like this go on for decades until one goes public and THEN the laws are changed or enacted. Things like this happened a lot with victims asking for help but the lawmen would say they couldn't do anything until a person actually killed someone. Then, its too late. Pretty much like today.

Good morning JD. Almost at a loss for words here. I’ll just start with Thank You!
So much to unpack here. Sadly like so many abused children, Mary didn’t ask to be born into a situation where there was so much evil, hatred and darkness. She didn’t deserve that! Hopefully through your telling of her tragic story. Mary may possibly feel the heartfelt sympathy and love of all of your wonderful family that gather here together to enjoy to the stories you so artfully gift us with.
(One of my mottos, never use a sentence where a paragraph will do)
Only 100 years ago! People turned up from all over the country! Wether out of morbid curiosity, to pay their respects, or just to witness the spectacle. Amazing! And to think those hills were so sparsely populated to begin with. To have 1000 MEN enraged enough to go down enact justice? Different times nowadays for sure.
So much for a loss for words, eh? But again as with all of the stories you bring us. I could feel the urgency, righteous anger, disgust and range of other emotions coming through your narration of this tragic tale. So gifted J D. God Bless You! And all the rest of the family here. Stay safe. I’m late for work! LOL going to listen to this again on the way in. See you next Saturday. Can’t wait. jj, out!

As is YT's wont, your channel popped up and I am so glad I watched it. I live in England but love stories of pioneers of America, Canada and Australia. A desperately sad story and one wonders, back in those days, how many children met the same fate but never discovered. And sadly, today, the murder of children is just as rife. That Frazier woman and Pitts were just pure evil, what that young child had to endure is sickening. That they received such short sentences is shocking but at least laws were made to safeguard children. Justice is slow to evolve. Thank you for this upload and I am going to watch a few more.

Thanks Lynne! Welcome to the channel. Very good question on wondering how many children met this same fate. I hold my breathe and guess untold numbers. For hundreds of years in Appalachia prior to 1900, a Childs main value was to work the farm or homestead, and many died in infancy. A child dying was very common and most folks never paid any mind unless the child was getting big enough to work... then folks would mumble under their breath "man, that's a shame..."

I started reading it while walking back from the mailbox to the house. Then I stayed up way past my normal bedtime reading your fascinating, yet somehow familiar, stories. Each one wrapped itself around my soul like one of my Granny's quilts, which give me warm comfort on these cold winter nights.
I enjoyed each and every page and looked forward to the next with all the anticipation of one waiting for a homemade apple pie! You are a consummate storyteller and weaver of tales!
As a deeply rooted transplant to East Tennessee, I have come to appreciate the people who inhabit these hills and hollers, whose ancestors before them lie sleeping beneath the rocky ground. You have brought them to life so eloquently and with so much emotion that I feel as if I know them all!
Good job, J.D.! I can hardly wait for the next book!

My only thought is how could any mother have left her poor little baby girl with that monster even to save her own life? I know the mother must have suffered greatly and simply sought to escape, however I suspect the virulence he exhibited to little Mary was precisely because his wife had left him and when he couldn't lash out at her from that point on that baby never stood a chance.

"I'm killing her inch by inch " what a despicable man and the woman too. To take that little girl and torment her to such things as putting her in a box to endure the cold winter nights and you didn't mention it, but I'm sure they did it as well, subject her to hunger as well . For the life of me I'll never be able to understand the human mind and how decrepit it can become or the depth it can reach. I know it was a different era, but I wonder why other people didn't notice the marks on her, such as teachers, police, neighbors, friends, ken folks. These are the type of people who come out after a tragedy such as this and say, I knew there were something going on up there in that house, if I knew for sure I'd a put a stop to it. Despicable! Thank JD, you must be Greek instead of Irish, Scottish or Welsh. Because the Greeks created tragedy in thier stories and that being said, Great job sir.

This is an amazing and heartbreaking story. Nowadays it's just another horrible story after the other. The fact that this crime affected so many people, all across the country, reveals how little we have evolved. The number of child murders has exploded! It's become commonplace to hear about another child wickedly abused and murdered by their parents. It's a sad commentary, to be sure!!
