We lost Wisconsin Rapids papermill in 2019. I can relate to this song very well went through divorce. Log truck in The farmers machine shed up north so I didn’t lose it
Back when I was little my town had lots of mills and post mills but now they are all gone..... my father is dead now and I run our little sawmill when I can. They made it hard for us loggers and sawers but by God we will survive no matter how much sweat and blood it takes. God bless the working people left in this country.
Oh yeah, I am on my mom's profile but I am 10 years old a future logger my dad works at a sawmill in Clarksville Mi some. I am a axmen show fan it's soo sad that some of those crews are out of business, I really love Pihl, Gustafson and Rygaard, in the Summers with my dad to the mill l love it there's a guy in his upper 50s that I'm gonna name my boy after. Politicians are so messed up. My dad also runs a small farm which is what my family has been doing which I love but I feel like God really wants me to log. I'm not gonna sit and play an Xbox ive already made plans to work for Pihl and have my own company and help the logging communities no matter how broke I am
As a logger from Port Angeles Washington, I remember struggling through this. My father-in-law's company (in which I am the v.p. of) was lucky enough to pull through. We watched a lot of companies fold up and a lot of good men loose everything. It was a time that I hope never happens again.
Happened back in 2001/2003 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. All the mills closed down and caused over 600 independent contractors and businesses to immediately lose their ability to sell their logs they had sitting on their cuts. You had companies that had existed for 60+ years go under because the logs weren't selling, mills weren't buying. Contracts dried up. My Father lost his business that his Father started back in 1920 and then after he sold what equipment he could - the bank took the house. No one is cutting wood so no one is buying equipment. Most of it went to rust. Some was sold off in pieces. Many families lost their homes and livelihoods over those short 3 years as they one by one they sold their houses and moved into town (or out of the province) or saw their assets seized. Truly it is a tragic tale in Northwestern Ontario. Of a town of 110,000 you could easily attribute 20-30,000 of them as members of forestry/logging families....now that is a very distant past. My Father has since passed away but he never did forgive or forget that everything he had worked for (62 years) was stripped from him and left our family stuck in a 2 bedroom home in a bad neighborhood - struggling to make rent. He passed away missing the forest and his home in the countryside. I wish I had been able to get him back out there before he passed away. He always loved the Birch and Pines.
kelton hubbard it's pretty good, not the best with the lousy government that got elected two years ago, they are taking a bite out of business for sure but we've been able to keep our heads above water for the most part. Usually we don't ever meet quota because it's so high so work is usually bountiful. How's WV (West Virginia?) doing these days?
kelton hubbard even with a lousy wood market I couldn't imagine doing anything else, there is no better life than that on the block.....we're shut down tonight due to a grizzly bear that was on the block, first bear of the year, I got half way to work and got turned around, lol.
Yep,it's sad,I hauled to the mills in Arkansas and Oklahoma that closed, when is it going to stop!!!I don't no nothing else to do,I grew up sawmilling and logging, nice vid,Thanks
Hey Thanks For Sharing These Great Ive Not Heard Any Body Else Signs These Kinds Of Songs If It Not From Yrs Ago ? Thanks For Sharing Susan & Frank Humbouldt Ca. Ole Time Logger My Man Is ! Peace & Love .,
Family used to work at sawmills it started with my great granddad seems and kept going till all my cousins went off doing there own stuff being on drugs and stuff so i started working at 1 and i wouldn't change it i love the hard work !
i;m not sure whether to like this video or hate it.. i remember the mills shutting down in camino, north fork.. while terra bella hung on for a while longer.. what a trip down memory lane.. it was hard, hot work working the burns icehouse, sonora, rose creek, and some i can't remember the names of.. wonder whatever happened to Dutra trucking? at any rate, thank you for posting this video.. it was a reminder of the good times on the sierra and sequoia..
Logging is a dying art. Mechanical logging has pretty much taken over. I've been logging for nearly 40 years. My only wish is that I die doing what I love to do.
It's still logging just better machinery and safer, my father in-law logged for years and said 30 to 40 trees a day per man was good production back then, the guys cutting on his forest land now can do 800 to 1000 trees a day depending on the terrain. Like everything it evolves an becomes more efficient. I bet the early loggers scoffed at the use of chainsaws and other advances just the same
Cool song unfortunately its too true though now. This is where it all starts here in the woods, this is real life, real hardworking, risk taking people. This is the TOP of the food chain.
one of the last mills in my state just shut her doors for making lumber. she stills makes some wood product. but only a few people are needed for that. sucks when a big company buys out a fmaily owned mill. sad to see her parking lot empty and all the helmets hanging on the fences. no one to log the timber anymore. all they will log is little logs.
hey man i was born a logger and i come from a family tradition of logging im going to keep setting my chokers till the end. or im going to die with the pleasure of being a logger.

In my town the mill just shut down for good she sent her last board out a week ago. Now its only the particle board plant running. That means in my area only the tiny trees will be logged for pulp. It was a sad day to drive by the big mill and see hundreds of hard hats hanging on the fences one for everyone that lost there job.

Loggers are quite possibly some of the manliest people in the world. Right up there along with firemen, sailors/fishermen and soldiers. XD
