I prefer the album version as a song but this is an incredible feat of vocal acrobatics. And her voice is astonishingly resonant live. She and her peers from the 90s made the best music of my lifetime.
Jewel’s first album was released in ‘95 ( where this song is from) when she was 21. It was a monster hit, with the song Who Will Save My Soul the standout. She’s had an interesting life, beginning with singing and yodeling with her dad when she was a young teen. Read her bio on Wikipedia.
Her vocals & range is some of the best ever. This version of the song really showcases how talented she is. Her vibrato is unlike anyone ive ever heard. Masterpiece
I’ve always thought that Jewel has a thousand voices. If you watch an entire concert ruclips.net/video/DLPcS__K5N4/видео.htmlsi=N8b9zKt5EDUQsTlO (I recommend Jewel live at Humphrey’s by the Bay) you’ll realize that she’s more than just range or vibrato or tones. She literally has innumerable distinct voices from which she crafts her tales, like a voiceover actor with a thousand different characters in their repertoire. It’s completely fascinating to hear a whole concert because you get to hear so many of her voices. I know this video is already a year old and I’m just now finding it, but just for your own enjoyment and amazement I encourage you to watch an entire concert of hers, preferably one in an intimate setting without the background noise of 30,000 people.
Hi friend, great reaction. Found your channel because of this jewel reaction. She is one of the most amazing and underrated vocalists of the past 25 yrs. Since you seem to appreciate an amazing voice I can fully recommend exploring more Jewel
It's funny that you said she seems like the type that does what she wants, because that's exactly what she did! She played in coffee shops and bars as a teenager and eventually had labels fighting over her and was offered a 1 million dollar deal. She read a book about the music industry before signing, and realized that the money is really a loan and that the label would have complete control over her so she turned it down...as a broke teenager. Incredible. But later she signed a contract with Atlantic, she wrote her songs the way she wanted and was incredibly successful. She grew up with an abusive alcoholic father with no running water and ran away at 16 eventually becoming homeless, that tough upbringing is likely where she learned to inject so much emotion into her music. She is really an incredible woman.
Jewel was a HUGE deal. Her album, “Pieces of You” was wildly successful. For interest, you may want to check out the studio version of this song…very different. This is Jewel in her more poetic side - she was a poet, songwriter, singer.
@@kcarr9589 All good. It always gives a special taste in my mouth when I discover artists after they're dead. It happened to me with Eva Cassidy, and it was terrible tbh. Now, with Jewel, I can relax and know that there will be more from her in the future, God willing. Take care :-)
I personally prefer her 2006 version from the live concert released on dvd. "The essential live songbook" it was called, it was a performance at the rialto in Joliet, Illinois. But this is my 2nd favorite jewel song ever. she's just immaculate.
I think I will always be a fan of the album version - that's the way I first heard this song, so it's automatically my favorite. Definitely worth checking out.
I completely agree. While I do love Jewel, I have never enjoyed her live performances as much because they seem a bit self-indulgent. She strays so much from the melody of the song that her fans love that you can’t help but feel like she’s only singing for herself. I know that sounds like an awful interpretation but that’s how I feel about her and a lot of other artists actually
Jewel is one of like 5 artists that I listened to on repeat; she shaped my taste in music. And her poetry was foundational to the development of my own writing. This isnt everything she has...If you want to see all of her vocal acrobatics check out her performance at the 1999 Woodstock of Who Will Save Your Soul....soooo many vocal techniques, its insane both higher and lower than in this one....she likes to sing along with the guitar and mimic it and all kinds of stuff, yodeling and all kinds of stuff. It's like minutes of her freestyling her vocal art....TOTALLY different from the studio version, its 100% her just displaying her art!
Find a dvd of Jewel Live at Humphries by the Bay. She is amazing in a full concert. First half is her alone w acoustic guitar, she does many of her very best songs in what I like to call, Jewel's five voices. Then she is joined by a band for part 2 which is just as good. She often ends her shows with yodeling, leading the faster yodeling and finally high speed yodeling, all live. Amazing. So glad my stepdaughter left her cd in my stereo, I figured it would just be some pop crap I would hear a few songs and never again. Instead I loved her and now own most of her music.
Humphrey’s by the Bay is my absolute FAVORITE concert I’ve seen her do! I’m just so fascinated by her ability to tell a story in so many voices. You broke it down much more succinctly, but I always say that Jewel has 1,000 voices. She doesn’t ONLY have vocal range or JUST have multiple tones or varying vibrato, when you watch an entire concert it feels like she’s communicating in 1000 different voices. I’ll never NOT be enthralled by her.
Timing is perfect. I woke up this morning to new Jewel music that she performed on The Masked Singer, including a cover of Gaga & Patsy Cline. Her control is nuts. My favorite song is one that was never officially released, but she performed live… called “Violet Eyes”. Even her pop stuff when she was making fun of pop culture is great… see the song “Intuition”. Have a great day!!!

You must watch the original video to hear her voice in the original. I was one of the first to have her CDs of this album at 95 before it was actually being sold. Given to me by my cousin who is in school with her at Interlochen school music. Born and raised in Alaska her yodeling is incredible. This song became my lifeline immediately, as I learn the piano riff right away. Even playing it just a few weeks ago from memory. Who Will save your soul is another great great song and video. Never heard this version and I love it strip down but nothing like the original.❤

this was an extreme performance.. to be fair this is not how the song usually sounds. she is expecting here that everyone listening has heard the song before so she's changing it up. Do yourself a favor and listen to it from the official release video too.

I would suggest to invest in some quality neutral studio quality headphones before you start making videos like this. Slamming air buds into your skull and then acting like you get it makes you look a bit meh. Jewel is incredible though, been a massive fan since 1994.
I love Jewel . I have all of her albums. But this version is terrible. Sounds nothing like the original so I don't know who's bright idea it was to give this to Adam. By the sounds of it , it was a few of them. Should hear the album versions of songs first THEN listen to live versions and compare them. Are these artists better live than pre recorded? That is what people listening for the first time should begin their artist journeys with. This song just isn't Foolish Games.
It's the other way around, albums are made simple for the larger audience. That's where starting artists start. Developing is only possible when you step away from the brainless large audience that has to be reached through albums.
I love Foolish Game, but personally dont like this rendition of it. I much rather prefer her studio version that was a monsterhit around the world. It was the third single from the movie Batman & Robin.
Jewel is absolutely one of the greatest female singer/songwriter of her generation.
Amazing performance - had the pleasure of seeing her live this summer. Incredible. Check out grey matter by her. Haunting, beautiful, and poetic.

I will and want to stay more in touch. You are wonderful. The best. You deserve it.💐🌷🌲💞thanks. Got some.catching up to do
She’s also a yodeler
Shazam!!!!
This is not related to Jewel in any way, BUT... You MUST go check out a cover of O Holy Night that I just found. Honestly, it hit me in the feels and took my breath away. Check out the cover from Tommee Profitt (feat. Tauren Wells & SVRCINA). It’s absolutely breathtaking.
React to another great song of Jewel singing with Garth Brooks, "Someday Soon"
thx adam! that was a great reaction ! love jewel - just had to send u this just cuz we love great music! our whitney at her best - sorry nothing to do with jewel but didnt know how else to get to get this to u ! - hope u enjioy - our whitney ! - take care of u and urs ! - ruclips.net/video/NvRpESH_t-E/видео.html -
this was an extreme performance.. to be fair this is not how the song usually sounds. she is expecting here that everyone listening has heard the song before so she's changing it up. Do yourself a favor and listen to it from the official release video too.
Love Jewel! She is timeless, and one other that I know will blow you away if you have not heard them is Evanescence - My Immortal ruclips.net/video/5anLPw0Efmo/видео.html. Another singer I love that you may enjoy, goes by Daughtry, his cover of Wicked Game is excellent. Daughtry Performs Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' Live ruclips.net/video/7V9YdG91Qag/видео.html
Hey thanks! She was great! And I know Evanescence and Daughtry very well, I have them on rotate often haha My Immortal and No Surprise are favourites of mine
@@AdamStraughan LOL, my search to find artists that may be new to you continues. Meanwhile, I continue discovering great talent, that's new to me, while watching your reactions. Happy holidays Adam.
You should listen/react to String Sessions with Lindsey Stirling ft Amy Lee ‘Wasted on You’ it’s an amazing collaboration with 2 incredible women.
Your channel is awesome, Adam. Good music. I suscribe. Please react to Monica Naranjo - Europa (Live). She's amazing, one of the best voices in the world. An incredible singer. Greetings from Spain. Link 😜👇

Such a shame to see someone react to this and not the superior album version
I’m going to come to it, a lot of people have asked for it!
The original video is better l..you owe it to yourself to watch it …JS
I would suggest to invest in some quality neutral studio quality headphones before you start making videos like this. Slamming air buds into your skull and then acting like you get it makes you look a bit meh.
Jewel is incredible though, been a massive fan since 1994.
Slamming AirPods into my skull and then acting like I get it? What does that even mean?
I love Jewel . I have all of her albums. But this version is terrible. Sounds nothing like the original so I don't know who's bright idea it was to give this to Adam. By the sounds of it , it was a few of them. Should hear the album versions of songs first THEN listen to live versions and compare them. Are these artists better live than pre recorded? That is what people listening for the first time should begin their artist journeys with. This song just isn't Foolish Games.
It’s different than the radio version but not worse. It’s her song and closer to the original idea. Not as “pop” but not worse- more interesting.
It's the other way around, albums are made simple for the larger audience. That's where starting artists start. Developing is only possible when you step away from the brainless large audience that has to be reached through albums.
this is one of the worst versions Ive heard. Its like watching phoebe in the coffeeshop. This song is so much better than to be sung like that
Wow
I love Foolish Game, but personally dont like this rendition of it. I much rather prefer her studio version that was a monsterhit around the world. It was the third single from the movie Batman & Robin.
Yeah, I agree. I prefer the original, much better version IMO.
Nah this rendition is sooo good. Her voice brought me to tears
Oh my. Check out When You Loved Me released just this week!
