Why do we call these "futuristic"? It is 1950s science fiction urbanise-for-urbanisation-sake idea. Growth for growth sake is an idea for the past. Growth of population and urban land are creating problems. Economic growth is unsustainable and is a moribund concept for the 20th century. Regenerate the soil, forests, create sustainable building and growing: that is actually ambitious. There is nothing ambitious or admirable at spending insane amounts of money to make more concrete stuff and selling more stuff and having central dictatorial powers, private or national.
You raise a valid point about the importance of sustainability and environmental regeneration. It’s true that unchecked urbanization and growth can lead to significant ecological and social challenges. However, it’s worth noting that many modern development projects, including Uzbekistan’s new capital project, are incorporating sustainable practices and green technologies. For instance, Uzbekistan is actively investing in renewable energy sources, such as a 250-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant with a 63-MW battery energy storage system1. This project is expected to provide clean electricity to approximately 75,000 households and reduce over 327,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually1. Additionally, the country has plans to implement $78.6 billion in investment projects focused on infrastructure and green energy2, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable economic growth. The concept of growth has evolved from mere expansion to include sustainable development. This includes regenerating soil, preserving forests, and building sustainable communities. The aim is not just to create more ‘concrete stuff’ but to foster a balance between development and the environment. It’s also important to recognize that economic growth and environmental sustainability are not mutually exclusive. With the right policies and technologies, it’s possible to achieve both. The new capital of Uzbekistan represents an opportunity to showcase how modern urban development can be both ambitious and sustainable, aligning with the 21st-century vision of growth that benefits both people and the planet. what do you think?
