Love the channele. Please keep it up! Also if you can have small actionable challenges like things people can do to move the needel in a crowdsourced way then that would be fun and might draw more people to the collective challenge that might need ideas from all corners of society.
Unfortunately, my take on it (as a lay-person, but a keen observer), is that many of the designs center around a "Tea-Kettle" concept of heating a fluid and using the hot fluid to turn a turbine, and a generator. So, basically sort of boiling water, but designing a $$multi-billion way of doing it powered by Deuterium and other "fuels"...sigh... - A notable exception to this is the "Aneutronic" designs, like the Fusion Reactor that Helion Energy is developing, that captures prodigious amounts of energy directly from the fusion plasma in the reaction chamber and uses that to charge a large bank of huge capacitors and re-uses that energy to power itself, and also (in future designs) channel excess energy directly to the grid. No "Tea-Kettle" or boiling water or any other fluid involved!

I would love to know estimates of what power O/P from turbines will be needed to make fusion profitable considering all the costs involved in building and running a power station.?
This is such beautiful technology! It hits my mind like an impossible note sung by a non-diva, that makes one want to cry. That this is coming together on the horizon of AI is yet another quantum of achievement on top of even more potential. Mr. Tesla himself would be impressed. I'm just a welder and mechanic but I think I can appreciate the value of what is on the verge of being accomplished here.
59MJ of heat energy is worth about 20MJe which is about 6KWhr(e), worth about 1pnd, so pray tell what was the total energy input to the entire facility in pounds plus maybe a share of the capital costs for running the plant for what maybe 30years and a few energy pulse shots. Also where did the tritium come from, almost certainly it came from a Candu fission reactor for which there is vanishly little production which is headed to 0 because of the anti fission hysteria even amongst the fusion people. And since the plasma produced neutrons from the fusion reaction, those neutrons must have irradiated the containment vessel making it quite radioactive, and please tell us what percentage of the tritium was actually burned in the event, I suspect very little, the tritium is ofcourse very radioactive, far more so than plutonium since its half life is many orders shorter. So no statement about the electrical energy or the tritium value inputs, only a fantastic celebration of a pound worth of equivalent electrical energy output. If this doubling keeps happening every 10 years, then the JET will eventually be producing more energy out in value than the entire capital cost of the entire plant in about 1Million years. Oh but the plant is now shut down so no payback ever. There will be quite a cleanup bill for the radioactive vessel though. Meanwhile we have fission which is a very difficult word to say for almost all fusion scientists and greens. Oh the irony, if they used Lithium Deuteride for the DT reaction, they first have to fission the lithium releasing no energy but getting net energy when the released tritium fuses with the chemically bound deutereum. Also we have Molten Salt Reactors which operate at only 1000K, while these fusion reactors are running close upto 100,000,000K, how could a 100,000 increase in temperature be favorable to the engineering of the project. At least in MSRs, the neutrons stay within the fuel or can be used to breed more fuel, but in fusion, most of them are going to be lost in the walls.
It's disappointing that JET could never break it's Q=0.7 record from 1997 and finally attain breakeven, but I suppose it was impossible after the tungsten divertor was installed in the 2000s.
It contributed significantly in the understanding of plasma science and the development of fusion technology. While it was originally planned to be shut down in 1992, it was continuously upgraded testing different scenarios, and lasted 40 years. It could have been still further upgraded, and JET scientists had submitted a proposal in that direction. However, since the UK, which now owns JET, left EURATOM after Brexit and has different plans. JET is based on 1970's coil technology, and the fusion programme must move ahead with modern technologies, such as high temperature superconductors. It is indeed a shame that JET, as well as TFTR in Princeton were unable to reach breakeven as people expected back in the 1980s, but success isn't only measured in terms of that.
Oh. Ps Someone going into fishing infusion with your A. P. H. D. The only reason to do that is to know that you always have a job because you will never truly achieve it. And you will spend Your whole life trying to make a system 1% better That is still around 15% Efficient. It's just the truth man. You can waste a lifetime working on fusion and fission. Knowing that you will dienever truly seeing it be achieved. You can love to hate me, but that's facts.
