As a man, when you get old, you can say whatever acerbic thing is on your mind because you stop caring about what women think. It's one of the great benefits of aging. At the same time, however, you continue to respect women who can take real sarcasm and give back with charm. I think that is what's happening here. Cleese is sort of testing her, and she's passing with flying colors.

John Cleese was being mean, ironic and old-fashioned on purpose (I mean look at his ironic cat joke which I am quite certain was set up beforehand between them ) and Taylor Swift tried to play the straight ( not perfect but she has no comedic background) . I am sure it was good fun for both of them.

I just love her comeback! As others have said, I'm not her demographic and don't know many of her songs, but I really do enjoy seeing her on TGNS - she comes across really well.

Insult??? It was tease. The man is a comedy genius and loves to create a bit of mischief on these type of TV shows. He did what he normally does.... made a statement which he is well aware will not be appreciated by the intended target, to see what sort of response he will get. i.e. will she take the bait?
He turned and looked her straight in the eye, with a twinkle in his, letting her know for sure that she was being teased and was expected to respond. To her eternal credit, she looked him straight back in the eye, with the hint of a smile and a twinkle in hers, that said "I know what you're doing", and then delivered her well chosen response, with perfect poise, grace, comedic effect and timing.... much to the delight, amusement and admiration of Mr Cleese. ( He can clearly be heard to compliment her afterwards.)

I don't really have a position on this. Having now seen then show in its entirety I thought it was one of the best Norton shows in recent times. It all seemed to mesh. I just find the difference in reactions to this clip very interesting.

Down south (in the Us) I heard this phrase a lot. It, and I might be wrong, is when you said something unnerving that could start conflict. It was mostly said by women wanting to keep their composure but was annoyed by the comment made.
Mostly, I heard mothers say it to children or wives to husbands. And mostly in public situations. It was one way of saying, "You just picked a fight and neither of us really want to go there so refrain from the topic." It is like saying the phrase, "Don't go there."
