    THE VESPER
    45ml (1 ½ oz) gin
    15ml (½ oz) vodka
20ml (⅔ oz) Lillet Reserve Jean Lillet (or substitute Cocchi Americano or regular Lillet with a couple of dashes of orange bitters)
    Glass: coupe or martini
    Garnish: lemon twist
Add all of your ingredients to a shaker tin, shake with ice and double strain into a chilled glass. Twist your lemon peel over the top to expel the oils and use to garnish.

The pop culture attraction of the Vesper got me to try Lillet, which I came to prefer over dry vermouth, and my personal favorite Martini is made 2:1 with a low-juniper gin (like Aviation) and Lillet Blanc (but I stir it). The low-juniper gin is a substitute for the original's gin-diluted-with-vodka.

I'm a big fan of classic martinis, but I've yet to find a vesper recipe of any description or ratio that didn't taste terrible. I'm of the view that Ian Fleming never even tried this drink before he put it in his novel. He just wanted Bond to be distinctive, and came up with a cocktail that sounds distinctive, but tastes awful in real life.
The closest I got was making a martini with Byrrh Quinquina, which I dubbed a "Pink Vesper", but it still doesn't quite work. Kinas tend to be too fruity to work with the gin, and you're better off with regular ol' vermouth.

Casino Royal is my favorite Bond movie and perhaps my favorite action movie of all time. I’ve always wanted to try the original Vesper but that damn Kina lillet! It’s been discontinued since 1985 so it’s wears that it’s in the movie. Perhaps there were a few bottles floating around.

You can try Cocchi Americano instead of the Kina Lillet

Cocchi Americano is about as close as you can get these days. The Vesper is a great cocktail. Use a decent gin, like Beafeater and Ketel vodka (which she uses) and you're golden.

The actual closest thing to Kina Lillet, now that Jean Lillet Reserve is discontinued is Kina l'Aero d'Or by Tempus Fugit Spirits. See if that's available in your market.

Where would one find Jean Lillet Reserve?

You’d have to have a little hunt I think, mine is from a couple of years ago (from Nick’s Wine Merchant in Melbourne) but the full video was more just playing around with a fun bottle - you could sub Cocchi Americano or regular Lillet with a couple of dashes of orange bitters 😊

@@BehindtheBar It's a matter of luck if you can find it. It's a discontinued product now. Kina l'Aero d'Or by Tempus Fugit Spirits is the closest thing available.

I thought it was for the ice. Little pieces would float so when he sipped it, it would dilute the top and he wouldn’t get drunk

gin AND vodka...wow! what does the Lillet taste like? does it add sweetness? (I'm more of a sweet girl!😊)

I did a full video on the Lillet here which might help:
      ruclips.net/video/z1J_wr21xIc/видео.htmlsi=x7yXTrEdWIZUdjgA
It definitely does add sweetness and body as opposed to a regular dry vermouth, but it has a little bitterness to it as well. Overall I wouldn’t say this is a sweet cocktails, but it is quite soft and approachable compared to most martinis.

The worst Vesper Martini video that I have seen so far. Very little history, wrong ratio, no love for proper garnish, no info on alternatives and minimal excitement. Unsubscribe for sure.

Whoa, so much intensity, I think you need a martini 😜. These ‘make it quick’ videos are cut downs from longer videos - I’ve dropped it below. Some people prefer more history and chat, some prefer to cut to the chase so we cater to both.
The reason I played around with the ratio was to hero the Reserve Lillet, so I did write ‘my way’ in the title 😉
