People often praise Denzil for this film which he rightfully deserves. But I really think Ethan’s performance is underrated. He plays it so low key and doesn’t even try to keep up with Denzil. Instead just plays it straight
I'd only seen Ethan Hawke in Great Expectations before Training Day. Of course I went in cause of Denzel but Hawke's performance convinced me he could go head to head to Denzel. Been a fan of his ever since
Ethan understood the assignment. He knew that matching Denzel's energy would dilute both of their performances, so he commits to juxtaposition by rolling with the punches and letting Denzel take control of the improvisation. Denzel is like a lion hunting for meat, and Ethan intentionally became the meat so that we could witness carnage.
What I always love about Ethan Hawke is that he always talks about what he does in the context of working with other people. You can tell that for him, the art is collaborative and he never forgets that his successes are owing to the work of many people.
@ajordan2323 Have you seen Philadelphia? His chemistry (non sexual obviously) with Tom Hanks was really capturing. Very poignant film. Both actors were just excellent in it!
Beautifully said Ethan. Every performance is important, regardless of "what's riding on it". Both you and Denzel were magical in "Training Day" and I'll re-watch it for many years to come. That's what makes a great movie and a great performance. Bravo.
i always loved Denzel but i became a fan when I saw ethan in training day and ever since i saw his performance i watch anything and everything with him in it
Ethan gave some excellent advice on how to prepare for a role. Each role is different. In role he was SP to MJ. Yes I used basketball players to talk about acting. Jacquie Taliaferro
It's weird I enjoyed how the interviewer framed the first question then the second one got pushy and then the "riding" on training day thing was almost on the verge of kvnty. Especially after Ethan gave you a solid minute long, from the heart, answer. Props to him for checking him twice with a gentleman's "back off" and dropping it. That being said I too googled Ethan Hawk training Day so...😅 I'm gonna watch Brooklyns finest where hes the bad cop now and see if it still hits. You should too😂
100% , then after you can tell the interviewer was put off by Ethan being put off & he went full kvnty with the "I *assume* you were happy when he won the oscar" loke wtf is his deal. Anyway Ethan saved this amateur hour with his professionalism

*Denzel Put some respect on his name.
Ethan's portrayal of Hoyt was perfect in making Denzel's Alonzo more terrifying and controlling.

What a fantastic interview and positive attitude. Here, here Mr. Hawke! ✨🏆✨
Just watched ‘leave the world behind’ such a facial expressive actor. Superb.

Tape is a phenomenal film…Ethan super creepy in it
Intelligent young man, think he's going places.
Sometimes, comments like this can sound a bit egotistical and self centered but, Ethan Hawke is pretty damn good himself.
Mission accomplished
This car is not from the motor pool! LOL!!!
Fucking awesome.
Tape is great. Ethan plays a bad guy in that.
😎
Tell me a story. Hoyt.
Not a good movie just great performances
He might have been high, during this interview.
Stop that - you have no empirical evidence to support your statement- so say it
