Pacino screams deniro plays the same gangster big deal Mann is full of shit on the plus side he shows what pain In the asses women are the reason bob dezeros films are so long is that he says the same line four times each stupid wop
Apart from De Niro and Pacino's two main characters, there are so many side characters in this movie; Pacino's daughter-in-law, who tries to commit suicide, played by a very young Natalie Portman; the driver who is trying to stay on the straight and narrow path, but succumbs to temptation and ends up getting killed in the bank robbery, Van Kilmer's wife, played by the stunning Ashley Judd, etc. The film even has the LEGEND Wes Studi as a minor character from the police department. For me there are minor characters who feel far more rounded and genuine than main characters in lesser films. This is a testament to how good Heat is.
So grateful my parents took me to this film when I was 11 and I was able to see this masterpiece on the big screen. Can still remember the electric feeling in the theater during this scene.
I’d seriously like to know why you think this is a ‘masterpiece’. It’s a slightly above average heist movie with an admittedly iconic shootout scene. Aside from that it’s good. Not bad, certainly not great but good.
The thing about that scene is it is arguably the greatest antagonist, protagonist meeting in cinema history. Indeed, why not have the two main adversaries meet and hash things out. Then go out and try and kill each other. It's a handshake on a deal of death. Brilliant filmmaking.
DeNiro’s slight smirk and darting of his eyes to the left at the end of the scene is perfection. We don’t know it yet but he is going to drop his surveillance within minutes and that was his plan all along that evening. ‘I had coffee with McCauley HALF AN HOUR AGO!’
In my opinion, De Niro came out of this best. He had the best character, and played it to perfection. Pacino's character was less likeable, and somewhat one dimensional.
Always thought DeNiro was the better of the two (every Italian girlfriend I ever had was in love with Pacino) but the diner scene makes me think Pacino is just as good.
Back in 1992 I interviewed with a law firm, and the attorney interviewing me casually mentioned that his daughter was trying to make it as an actress (I figured he was just making small talk, etc.). Well, his daughter ended up being Amy Brenneman (Robert DeNiro's love interest in Heat). She would later star in top shows like NYPD Blue and Judging Amy, but her sensitive performance in Heat helped make an already incredible film even better.
"Heat" is a perfect movie. In my opinion director Michael Mann best film. Atmosphere, suspense, storytelling, cast, soundtrack - very great cinema. And Val Kilmer's best performance.
I think Mann was really influenced by Hong Kong directors like John Woo and Ringo Lam in this movie, it seems to be a trope that the story involves two larger than life characters, who are nearly identical as people, but only differ in career, and often played by show stealing actors like Chow Yun-Fat, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Danny Lee Sau-Yin,and Simon Yam.
Am i in a Simulation or what? A few hours ago i randomly clicked on your Collateral Video about Cruise and inevitably checked out the director's best movie, Heat and ended the spree with the iconic coffee shop scene, and now you just release a video about Heat. Idk man, it seems the Simulation theory is very real right about now.
So I watched this twice and both times I realized something very difficult and personal. My family came apart _exactly_ like Vincent Hanna's. Same players same plays, _everything._ And I too walked away from the love of my life because the heat was on me. I don't --know if-- _think_ I'll watch a third time : P
My all time favorite movie. In my personal opinion the only flaw was the end. I don’t feel like De Niros character would have died. I don’t think he would have taken the risk of trying to kill Pacino instead slipping away with the lead he already had
Obviously Pacino is capable of more understated performances, my question to all the people saying "Al Pacino was too over the top" is this: since Michael Mann would've known about Pacino's range, why didn't he get that sort of subdued performance out of him, and would that have made it a better film?
I agree, I feel like the over-the-top delivery was only ever used when he was trolling informants/criminals. There’s plenty of moments where his subtlety shined, like the scenes with his (soon-to-be) ex wife and anytime he’s speaking to other officers
@@Renzy_YT Pacino has admitted Vince Hanna was supposed to be constantly taking little bumps of coke and this is where the over the top persona comes from. He was always just a little high in every scene, according to Pacino. I think he may have mentioned it in the full version of the Q and A you show in this video.
Yeah this scene is priceless. Two masters of the craft facing each other down. Old West shootouts got nothing on these two heavyweights. Heard they were roommates in acting school. (Yeah, they actually went to school to learn and perfect their stuff)
their conversation was foreshadowing to deniros end. perhaps he only let in to this outcome in to subtle to notice way…but maybe there was a resignation of sorts in tone that was meant to convey…id rather die then submit to the law. because his character was a true outlaw and lived by his rules only. respectable in several regards but ultimately too disagreeable in an orderly society, where tragedy (his death) was inevitably the final outcome.
Weakest performances of each actor while still in their prime. Good performances because these 2 can mail in better scenes than most actors can give on their best day but to say these 2 roles are among their best is ridiculous. Heat is a good movie from a good director. That’s it.
i love de niro early work when he was fresh clean and unconscious like mean streets hi mom , he was raw and radical , then came fame and hollywood and all that jazz to ruin the innocence of the artist ! as for pacino i dont care i dont get the comparaison two different style , i dont know but heat (exepect for the de niro adrenaline and the warmth when he appears on the screen ) is average and so mainstream
Here's my theory. They were never in the film together. Did u ever see them together? What I saw was the back of each others heads. Like in a 80s tv show. When they did a special and one of the characters would - guess what, have a twin. They would never be seen together.
Its strange - I had such high esteem for them - but then 'certain' Hollywood stars started preaching politics...and now... well, they lowered the bar themselves... not their most credible performances.
thank you for the video, Mann is unique! i agree with you in everything, thou... i find this scene boring and unrevealing from the first watch, it feels like they were saying things i already know from both. it works on its way, to give existential depth to the climax, but as highlight and 1st face off de niro/pacino, bit dull/overrated 😶🌫
One of the most iconic movies ever. This is a masterpiece. Utter perfection.
Not just the scene, the movie is 3 hours long and never boring.
Pacino screams deniro plays the same gangster big deal Mann is full of shit on the plus side he shows what pain In the asses women are the reason bob dezeros films are so long is that he says the same line four times each stupid wop
That’s crazy - I didn’t realize this until a day ago (after watching the and other videos about Heat)

besides both top performances, val kilmer gives a hell of a performance in this

One of the best movies of all time, glad it gets the recognition that it does
I've seen this movie like 20 times. It's a masterpiece.

And absurdly over the top and hammy throughout.
@@fivenightsatfreddursts2325 He is meant to be. IIRC, in the original scripts he's doing coke. He's over the top because he is THAT wired and high.
Cocaine is a helluva drug
Y’all are on crack, Pacino was a menace and the irony is he is the good guy

The heroic bloodshed movies, but in this case they cannot work together even a little.
Very obscure, but nevertheless Fun Fact - This scene was actually inspired by Ralph and Sam of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies fame.
That actually makes sense.
Classic looney tunes . Lol.

Renzy sounds like Patrick CC or viceversa.
Another ICONIC moment is the soundtrack of the final credits
De Niro far outclasses Pacino in this. Pacino is way over the top in this, whereas Di Nero is beautifully understated at all times
Incredible that you can have two completely different spelling of "De Niro" over the span of two sentences
@ thanks for calling me incredible. I’ll do even better next assignment

Michael is Michael.
I meant credited for the film. Dropped the ball there, I’ll be more considerate of that on the next!
