I adored Lisey's Story. It broke my heart in a million pieces and made me cry, and it was fantastic.

Was looking forward to your take on this one. It causes me angst because I've repeatedly read that SK says it's his favorite of his own work, but I've tried twice to read it and abandoned the effort both times.
I fully agree, though, with your comment about the effectiveness and elegance of the flashbacks.

This is in my top 3 for King. The inside/relationship language was wonderful to me, really made me feel I was their with them. And I didn't feel she was demeaned by relating so much of her life to her husband. When you love someone that much they're in your thoughts all day, and you can't help talking about them. Woodsmucky and others who looked at her like a groupie were the demeaning ones. I've re-read so many times!

I think the flashbacks to childhood were incredibly memorable and by far the strongest part of this book. And, Boo'ya Moon has many fantastic elements, including the shrouded entities around the pool. But I couldn't stand the stupid phrases that are everywhere. Perhaps worse, also that a lot of the time I felt that Lisey was written in a condescending way, always defined by Scott, often referring back to him in her internal monologues - "Scott had a word for this...", "Scott would have done this...". I feel that if this was rolled back / reframed (if only slightly), this would be a superb book, but as it it really sucked enjoyment out of it. I wonder if that is why King says Tabitha is not a fan...

Just finished it tonight and really had to work to finish the last 100 pages or so. The plotting just seemed needlessly complicated and it distracted from the strength of the story which was their central relationship. And the actual Lisey’s story? And the language…oof. Glad I finished it but I can’t imagine returning to this one again

Thanks for sharing - I can totally see your point, and Lisey's actual story is a bit of comedown, but I still loved this one!

    SPOILERS
Unfortunately I didn’t like this one too much. The biggest problem was the dialogue which made me fucking cranky when reading it😤😡. I also thought it was extremely boring and all the stuff about Scott’s childhood was dumb. I wanted to at least have an idea on what the ‘bad gunky’ was but no, his brother just went all nutty. And I hated the way that huge chunk of backstory was told with Scott doing his baby voice.
And in the end, I found the payoff really underwhelming. Nearly 700 pages just to get to Scott talking about how he killed his dad. I was just reading it like ‘oh for fuck sake is that really what everything was building up to?!’.
But I found Boo Ya Moon to be a really cool place. The atmosphere was very haunting and it was like a sigh of relief every time we went there.
Anyway, it’s not a favourite of mine, it kind of reminds me of The Talisman which I’ve just recently had to put down for similar reasons. Shitty dialogue, characters who are fucking annoying, extremely sluggish pace and a cartoonish villain.
EDIT: can I ask what the hell is the backdrop on the thumbnail??!?!?

    • @DaveReadsKing
      @DaveReadsKing  2 года назад +1

I obviously disagree on Lisey’s Story but enjoyed hearing your take - and am glad to see Boo’ya Moon was still powerful enough to make an impression too! I do, however, *love* your summary of The Talisman 😂
The background on the thumbnail was some weird pic I found on Canva - I thought it fitted the aesthetic of the Lisey’s Story miniseries

I also think many authors become forgotten or write a few books which are seen as critical failures. The same thing happened to Dean Koontz - as a young teen I read a lot of Dean Koontz early works up until Tick Tock and that was it for me...... His later works didn't grab me - with the exception of "The Taking". It was enjoyable but didn't have the same feel as his earlier works like Winter Moon, Midnight etc etc.

    • @DaveReadsKing

Fair - I'm just constantly impressed that someone as prolific as King manages to keep the quality consistently high, even this far in!

@@DaveReadsKing the problem is some fans will only like a particular era and anything different is seen as #notmyKing lol. I mean some fan really hate Cell but rave about The Stand ..... Yet both books are very very similar in tone and story. I'm always surprised by Kings output and routine.

Ok, farewell and sorry that it affected your viewing experience. As it happens, I really like the beep and don’t think it ‘idiotic’ at all, and I don’t think that’s a fair word to describe something just because you personally don’t like it. Anyway, I appreciate you at least trying to watch my video and if you ever feel like coming back it would be great to see you again. The beeps are in every one, which I know you won’t like but at least if you do try again you can be prepared for them being there.
