It's genuinely one of my favorite moments of this show, and a crucial part of Zuko's journey. And the foundation of one of the greatest memes from the Avatar universe. Great scene
Honestly for me, that simple "He is lying" might be amongst the hardest hitting lines in the show. Nobody we knew and (at least sort of) liked really got hurt like that before but the stakes are higher from now on.
Since this is Nickelodeon, the creators weren’t allowed to really show death on the screen or anything too harsh. Jet is heavily implied to have died and they wanted the arrow dude to mercy kill him
Confirmed by the creators: Jet is dead. Nickelodeon's policy was to never show the death of a child on-screen, so the writers had to re-write the scene so that Longshot aimed his bow at the door instead of at Jet (to mercy-kill him).
So all dai lee members are earth benders, and they are supposed to be pretty elite ones. Of course, next to toph, everyone looks like a novice, the only earthbender in the series who’s even comparable to her power is bumi.
It's insane how far ahead Toph and Bumi are compared to all other earth benders. You'd think being able to make earthen full-body armor would be more widespread, but Toph and Aang are the only ones shown doing it. If they showed more earth benders making personal armor for themselves, then Ty Lee's pressure point punches would be countered.
It was good that Zuko was able to put the Blue Spirit persona behind him, but I was sad to see that mask sink below the water. It's a very cool alter ego he had set up for himself.
The gloves and shoes of the Dai Li are stone. They were bending them. They are, for the most part, highly proficient Earthbenders. Toph, Bumi and Aang are in their own league...for very specific reasons. Each one of them has an exceptional advantage and taken on training in that advantage for much of their lives. The Dai Li represent the intense skill your average bender achieves. They ARE more trouble than you give credit and their strength comes from their teamwork.
I forgot how great this episode was! “Did Jet die?” Lmao also Toph really showed out this episode, from the lie detecting to the earthbending. Iroh yelling at Zuko had me shook as a child lol -The Dai Li use earthbending to control the flying gloves
According to the Avatar extras episodes (episodes that played with little fact bubbles that would show up), jet was Katara's first kiss. Hence her blushing
One of my favorite moments, Iroh laying down some harsh truths on Zuko. The emotion you hear from his voice is something that really struck me as a child watching it for the first time and I really appreciate them including a scene like that. I remember back then thinking woah this just got serious. Cant wait to see more of Zuko’s development!
Jet, a young boy/man who was loyal to the Earth Kingdom to the very end, only to be betrayed by the very people he swore to protect. And yes. Jet Is dead.
FYI: This is still Iroh's original VA. If I'm not mistaken he completed all his lines for Book 2. Book 3 you will notice the new voice actor. Also all Dai Li agents are Earthbenders, and they are elite benders at that. It just shows to you how powerful the main group is in comparison as well. The Dai Li are really powerful, though especially as a collective. Edit: Great reaction as usual!! Looking forward to the next one 🥂
Zuko: Uncle? Iroh: So, the Blue Spirit. I wonder who could be behind that mask ... Zuko: *sigh* What are you doing here? Iroh: I was just about to ask you the same thing. What do you plan to do now that you've found the Avatar's bison? Keep him locked in our new apartment? Should I go put on a pot of tea for him? Zuko: First I have to get it out of here. Iroh: AND THEN WHAT?! You never think these things through! This is exactly what happened when you captured the Avatar at the North Pole. You had him, and then you had nowhere to go! Zuko: I would have figured something out! Iroh: NO! If his friends hadn't found you, you would have frozen to death! Zuko: I know my own destiny, Uncle. Iroh: Is it YOUR OWN destiny? Or... A destiny, someone else has tried to force on you? Zuko: Stop it, Uncle! I have to do this! Iroh: I'm BEGGING YOU Prince Zuko! It's time for you to look inward and ask yourself the big questions! WHO ARE YOU, and what do YOU want! Me: One of the best scenes in the entire series.
Just for clarification, The comet does not give firebenders their power. They get their power from the sun; the biggest source of fire in the solar system. If you remember back to Katara vs Zuko at the end of book 1... Zuko tells Katara that she rises with the moon, and he rises with the sun. The comet only increases their power. Once the comet gets close enough to the Earth, it basically becomes another flaming ball of fire in the sky, and is much closer than the sun. If the comet's closest approach happens to be during the middle of the day, Fire benders are filled with UNIMAGINIABLE power. The comet has no effect on the ability to fire bend. On the day of Black Sun, the moon will move in front of the sun, completely BLOCKING the thing that gives the fire nation their fire power. Some people say this is a plot hole, considering that firebenders can still bend at night, when the sun is blocked by the EARTH, but you can easily come to the conclusion that the energy of the sun hitting and warming the earth is what gives them their power. Weaker at night, stronger in the day, and completely absent when no energy can reach Earth.
@@darastarscream1 year late but are these people dont know moon's light is not from the moon but sun? It is not much as powerful as sun but still its sunlight = fire. Moon is always there even in day so that checksout too. But in an eclipse Moon blocks the sun. So there is no sun light but also there is no moonlight. So there is no firebending. There is no plothole. People just dont have basic knowledge of the solar system
Need to remember that this is a Nickelodeon kid's show, so it's not a weakness for the show not to linger on emotionally hard scenes and subject the kiddies to such scenes.
Loved your discussion after the episode. This one is probably in my top 10 ATLA episodes especially given the Iroh/Zuko scene which always makes me tear up. And Toph is definitely a beast and worth all the Dai Li. When Team Aang works together they are pretty amazing as you'll see next episode.
Great reaction as always! I'd say this is the point where the series shows the moral dynamic is not simply: "Fire Nation = bad; everyone else = good". As for your comment 24:00 - Nope, all the Dai Li are Earthbenders. Those gloves are made of stone... and it would take Earthbending to use them as depicted here.
I don't know what they were thinking trying to ambush them, after their lack of military prowess on the outer wall. Then just seeing how many big characters have come together in one spot, the slow pan across team avatar and...I dunno, orphan gang? Good luck indeed.
This episode shows one detail more than any other: Toph never looks where she is pointing. She doesnt see, so she would naturally have no inclination to look where she points. Such a small little detail, but it fills the whole show with life.

The blunt surface area of that rock with enough force going about 10-15mph straight to the chest......ain't looking good. We're looking at fractured ribs, contused/punctured lungs, esophageal perforations, and much worse. Seems slow and painful, thankfully there's a fan theory that implies Longshot put him out of his misery. That being said we have no idea how dense human bones are in this word and Toph's test cannot be accurate since people under stress will always fail a lie detector regardless of if they're lying or not. Another factor is that the scene cut away and we never cut back to them, which usually only happens when the writer's trying to trick the audience. So who knows, he may still be alive 🕵♂
Team Avatar was threatened by Long Feng and is under constant surveillance so they don't want to try stirring the hornet nest by taking action against the Dai Li or deep investigation, especially when they know Appa is somewhere within the city and acting recklessly may ruin their chance of finding Appa so they have to play safe and slow. They are between a rock and a hard place cuz that plays right into the hand of the Dai Li and they will probably never find Appa that way but doing things the hard way will be very troublesome and dangerous for them and Appa. Meanwhile Zuko is free to act however he wish so he can abduct and threaten a Dai Li agent and get instant result.
@@hotuannam5346 if team avatar know that dai lee has something to do with appa . Then why wasting time with flyers team avatar could do a spy mission on dai lee as zuko did . As appa is more important to aang than zuko and team avatar is more skilled than zuko who cannot use fire bending in ba sing se
@@krishnaroar8522 They don't know the Dai Li is directly involved in keeping Appa since Long Feng never stated that they have Appa when they talk, just that he could cause trouble for their search if they don't behave. Long Feng doesn't even have Appa when he made his threats as he captured Appa when Team Avatar has already settled in Ba Sing Se for some time but he knew they're searching for Appa since that's their first activity in Ba Sing Se and bring up Appa to intimidate them into acting obediently. Team Avatar doesn't know if the Dai Li has Appa or not, just know that he's somewhere in Ba Sing Se from the sandbenders' words so they search for him with flyers and not messing with the Dai Li to avoid troubles. Also unlike Zuko who's not under the radar, they are always watched by the Dai Li so it's not like they can just spy on or do anything against Dai Li agents and not getting caught (like the Dai Li know their every move and was fully expecting team Avatar when they get to the secret base). Granted, Zuko does know his stuffs when he goes directly for the Dai Li instead of searching around since he knows he can get away with it and that's the fastest way to get result. Team Avatar just can't afford to do that right away since they just know Appa is somewhere in Ba Sing Se and don't want to risk the Dai Li getting in their way (and unfortunately for them the Dai Li get involved without them knowing anyway)
@@hotuannam5346 that is true But for me i feel like team avatar didn't made any serious plan about finding dear friend appa even after some weeks. And zuko was able to do it because he is serious about capturing aang even though he doesn't have any plan after finding appa atleast he made a serious effort to get to appa.
@@krishnaroar8522 I guess it can feel like so when we don't get to see much of what they do in their entire stay at Ba Sing Se. I think they did try hard to find Appa through other means and by scouring the city (like Aang searching a zoo in Tales of Ba Sing Se) but Ba Sing Se is just too big and cost them a lot of time to go around searching, not knowing that they're being set on a wild goose chase since the Dai Li has Appa but they don't know it and don't want to get involve with the Dai Li, causing their search to drag on without any real success. If they made any search attempt prior to this episode it's likely off-screen anyway so we don't see it. But seeing Aang screaming at Joo Dee that they don't care about rules anymore and will do anything to find Appa I think they've already searched really hard to no effect and figure they need to be more extreme to get results. Zuko has no such concerns as Team Avatar and of course he's pretty clever and skilled as well, goes for the most effective way right from the get go and get results. Overall, I agree that Zuko knows his stuffs well and doesn't have restraints like team Avatar so he finds Appa quickly but I think we can be less harsh on team Avatar, knowing how much they love and care about Appa, just that they have to search a huge, strange city that they know nothing about while being challenged by dangerous people so it will be much more difficult for them.
What you've got to remember about Avatar is that it's one of the VERY rare Western Animations that deal with this sort of thing, you rarely ever get an episode where it's clear a character is either dead or dying in western animation and this - and a couple of others in the DCAU - were trailblazers that set things forwards that no one's ever really picked up since. Them having the gut punch be quick rather than long and drawn out is understandable if you see it like that.
Kinda weird that Jett spoke to Katara at the end like his wellbeing was particularly worrying to her. And the scene was made to look like she actually was very concerned. I mean, I am sure she doesn't want him to die but out of everyone she and Sokka would be the least concerned. Jett tried to make her an accomplice to mass murder. That's not something you get mad about then just get over it. I understand why Aang can. He is a monk and doesn't condemn almost anyone. She could definitely forgive him if he has changed considering its a war, but to actually get over it and become super concerned about him is weird. He is a war criminal by our worlds standards. Also, we don't even know if he has changed. I guess Toff can see if he is lying but we still haven't seen him interact with fire nation. His whole issue is with fire nation ppl. Until you see him not be a psycho to them you don't really know how he will act and if he has actually changed.
This episode is by far one of my favorite, the way it is its self contained adventure an at the same time ties to the bigger picture is brilliant. Also a lot of character development, as you guys said, we can see how much they all have grown, they're not just little kids anymore, they're enemies of the state
The greatest thing about this series is how they treat their other characters. They unlike DBZ or Bleach where they "white savior" the main character, this show everyone is fully capable and have their unique strengths and weaknesses. Despite Aang being the most powerful bender, he doesn't over shadow his allies and it feels just as valid to relate and root for other characters aside him.
I think it comes down to three reasons: 1. Aang is the youngest (besides Toph), the other kids are in their mid teens. So he needs the most emotional help from the mature kids. 2. As the Avatar he is a Jack of all Trades when it comes to the elements, but the most not the most powerful or skilled individually. Katara and Toph are far better benders with their elements than Aang is. 3. Aang is from a peaceful time so sometimes doesn’t understand the gravity of the war situation. He (and also Toph) are more lighthearted compared to the other kids who suffered directly from the Fire Nation.
@@MrKingYuji some fair points. From a writing standpoint, it make sense to write them this way which is my biggest credit to the show. Within story world, it can go many different ways buy the path chosen and expressed for these characters are as you said both logical in and outside the story.

@@hotuannam5346 that is true
But for me i feel like team avatar didn't made any serious plan about finding dear friend appa even after some weeks.
13:31 Aang be like "bruh, you my wingman or not?"
now that Appa back in the squad, I just want to remind you of an ancient unwritten rule when you watch Avatar, you have to hold/hug Appa plushie
I kid
19:52 Jet's dead, baby. Jet's dead. :)

I never knew Uncle Iroh was a fan of Babylon 5.

DID JET JUST.... DIE?
You know.. it was really unclear.
RIP Jet...
I can’t wait for u guys to react to legend of korra
Rip Jet.
19:00 Too much Katara in there. Aang wouldn't like seeing those flashbacks.
You know, it was really unclear
Did just Jet... Die?
This episode is by far one of my favorite, the way it is its self contained adventure an at the same time ties to the bigger picture is brilliant. Also a lot of character development, as you guys said, we can see how much they all have grown, they're not just little kids anymore, they're enemies of the state
U have a good instincts about zoko having a long journey to become good...
where are you guys?

the glove are made out of earth
Okay so everyone acts like its unsure but jet dies
one of the biggest mystery of the Avatar - Did Jet death or not
So jet died. They just couldn't show it. It's a kid show
2x18?
will be back up within the week hopefully, been getting bot raided on some videos so trying to fix it
So yeah, Jet died. They just couldn't show it in Nickelodeon
"Did Jet just.... die?" "You know, it was really unclear..."
Yeah like people already said here the fast emotional parts is Nickelodeon fault ... but the Flying glove is a rock glove they are earth Benders
Iroh's last sentence in the cave doesn't make much sense if you think about it. Zuko knows what he wants and why he wants it.
🔥❤️
Please start doing movie reactions preferably marvel movies if you haven’t seen them. It will help grow your channel and the movies r great
The greatest thing about this series is how they treat their other characters. They unlike DBZ or Bleach where they "white savior" the main character, this show everyone is fully capable and have their unique strengths and weaknesses. Despite Aang being the most powerful bender, he doesn't over shadow his allies and it feels just as valid to relate and root for other characters aside him.
I think it comes down to three reasons:
"Did Jet just die?"
The Joo Dee's sound like Siri 😲
OMG, I hate Zuko with that hair. I think he had the best hair in Zuko Alone, and then it just got... messy...
Zuko, it's time we had a talk... about your hair! It's gone too far!
You're entitled to your opinion. I personally love long hair Zuko.
@@thomasvrielink299 That is definitely peak Zuko Hair! Also...
