“Lake Laogai” has some of the most satisfying moments in S2. One, Aang going off on Joo Dee and taking matters into his own hands. Two, Iroh knocking some sense into Zuko with his convincing words of wisdom. And three, Appa reuniting with our main characters, plus putting Long Feng in his place.

It's great how much research the writers of Avatar did for the show. If you pay attention to Zuko's nightmare with the dragons, you can tell which is the villain dragon and which is the righteous dragon not only by the voice (blue being Azula and red being Iroh), but also by the colors and demeanor of the dragons. In Japanese Kabuki, the actors wear a makeup called Kumadori, and the colors have different meanings. The color blue represents a villain and negative emotions such as fear and jealousy, and are often calm and calculating. The color red represents the hero role, as well as passion, righteousness, honesty, courage, etc. Also, the color blue as symbology is seen with Azula. Her flames are blue, and her name comes from the word "Azul" which is Portuguese/Galician/Spanish for "blue". The creators of the show REALLY wanted to tell you "this character is bad" by creatively incorporating the color blue heavily into her character, which, again, in Japanese culture represents the villain.

31:04 I like Katara's facial expressions here, because you can clearly see she knows exactly what Aang is about to say, and she loves it. When she says 'what is it, Aang?', she twists her head in an affectionate manner, rather than raising her eyebrows or looking alarmed as she would if she didn't know what he would say; then she was just as frustrated as Aang, when Sokka interrupted them; and soon after, she gave Aang a little, but very passionate cheek kiss, with closed eyes and all, to encourage him a little further until he's back. This is not true. The creators, as well as the lead writing and director for this episode confirmed he was always meant to die from the injuries from Longfeng
Heartbreaking fact: Mako had cancer for a decent amount of time before he passed, so at least most of Avatar if not all. When his illness became terminal/he started to come to the end of his life, the creators came to him and asked if he'd like to do one more recording for the show, since Iroh, his Iroh, is so beloved, and Mako agreed. The recording of Mako singing "Leaves From The Vine" while crying, is the very last recording of Mako's voice (that we currently know of), and according to most sources, he's crying bc he knew he would pass soon atp. Fun Fact: The Dai Li was created by Avatar Kyoshi to maintain order and to serve the people, and after she died the royal family took it over and then everything went downhill from there.
The Writers confirmed that Jet died in that Episode. The Earth King was inspired by the last Emporer of China who had No Power at all, but believed until his Death that he was in Charge.
In the original ending Longshot was supposed to draw his bow on Jet after Jet nods to him. What everyone expected when he started drawing. Jet is gone.
Hey great reaction guys! So apparently that scene with Jet struggling on the floor and Longshot aiming bow and arrow supposedly at the door way was technically meant to imply a mercy kill on Jet, but they dialed it back to have it look a bit ambiguous as to what exactly was going down, so it wouldn't be too heavy, potentially, for nickelodeon.
Toph being this amazing bender and fighter, but not able to do simple things like put up posters is like how when I was younger, I could do splits and back bends and flips, but I couldnt touch my touch with my legs straight😭
I'll never get tired of watching a group of OP kids raiding the royal palace of the most defended city without breaking a sweat. Sneaking in ? Yeah nah ! We'll go through the front door, thank you.
Episodes 17 & 18 are one of the best in Book 2 of ATLA. Episode 18 is one of the best of season 2 in terms of action scenes. It highlights just how strong Team Avatar has become not just in individual power but how they function as a fighting team. 21:07, when I first saw Aang do that I literally had the same reaction you guys did, and this was back when it first aired on tv. You guys should watch the commentaries, whether separate or together, you'll learn some pretty interesting stuff. Like in that whole fight to the royal place, anytime a royal guard was pinned by a earth slab the animators had to animate a few of them wiggling and groaning to make it past the censors cause otherwise it looked like the 'Gaang' just killed them. Also if you noticed in the scene where they're taking the earth elevator you can notice that Appa is airbending to lighten the load ("he is a 6 ton flying bison"). All in all episode 17 as the feels and episode 18 starts strong with demonstrating how strong the 'Gaang' has become. (PS, take note of Long Feng's strike at Jet in correlation to his (Long Feng's) intent. There will be a pop quiz comparison later.)
While I'm excited to see how the guys react to many future scenes, I'm especially looking forward to how they handle watching Iroh go from uncle to ZADDY 😏😎😂
I remember the twist with Azula and her crew dressed up as warriors as it was revealed on tv. Little ten year old me was standing there with her jaw dropped (side note, they released new episodes once every two weeks with a friday premiere with a repeat on Saturday morning, I was often watching the repeated episode on Saturday).
Can we talk about how four teenagers just waltzed into the palaces front entrance, pimp slapped the entire royal guard, and absolutely embarrassed their security? And I love how Zuko did one morally right thing and his entire body’s check engine light came on? Great lmao
I've heard that originally Longshot originally wasn't going to be shown guarding the door and instead was going to mercy kill Jet but that was quickly changed. I can't find anything to confirm this though.
Jet absolutely dead. I’ve heard that Originally they wanted to have long shot aim his bow at jet suggesting a mercy kill, but they determined too dark for nick so left it a little more vague
27:35 Fun fact: Earth king Kuei was modeled after Puyi, the last emperor of China. His ministers did pretty much the same thing Long Feng did here. They knew China was a Republic but they hoped that by lying to the emperor and letting him believe that he still ruled China, that they’d keep their positions, salaries and importance. They were hoping to see a restoration of the monarchy in the near future so kept the emperor a hostage in a gorgeous cage (the forbidden city also modeled here) while they schemed with the warlords and the Japanese government.
The detail in the show is just crazy even in the small line of The earth king thinking Sokka is the Avatar. Since the war has been hidden from him as well as the Avatar news he would have assumed the Air nomad would have lived a regular life length and that in a group of kids the avatar must have reincarnated into water
So fun fact, the Earth kingdom king was based on an actual emperor. I believe it was a Japanese emperor. He had never left his palace until war broke out (I believe one of the World Wars but can’t be for certain) and was pretty much as helpless as a worm. Both characters are prime examples of what too much pampering/sheltering can do.
Fun fact idk if show mention it but the old man that told Aang where Appa is at that store house, is retired Dai Lee agent. Long Feng was giving him a special job for him.
Apparently, from what I've heard, after the Gaang left Longshot, Smellerbee and Jet alone and Longshot drew his bow he was originally supposed to aim it at Jet for a mercy shot, but that was obviously a bit too dark for Nickelodeon so they had him aim at the doorway to guard them instead
About Toph and the blind jokes, I want to share a small anecdote with you guys. I live and work in São Paulo, one of the greatest cities in the world (the most populous in the south hemisphere). Because of that, it's not uncommon to see people of different ethnicities, sizes and shapes all around the city, specially considering that Brazil already is a multicultural country. But I digress. Once I was getting back from work by train in a station called Barra Funda, to get into the Luz station and board the subway home when I noticed that in the car I've entered there was a lot of blind people gathered around in the seats. They were all chatting and making blind jokes like: "Can't to see how gorgeous I look?" and I immediately thought of Toph. I must confess that silently giggle by hearing all of those jokes. I never thought blind people have such sense of humor irl By the time I've arrived in the station I needed to get off, some of them asked me to help them to board off the train. Since there wasn't a subway worker in sight, I've told them to wait while I get help from someone working on the subway station. Two workers helped all the people to get into their trains (because Luz station is crazy full of connections) and I helped a lady to get into a central hub, where her husband was expecting her. The craziest thing in this whole situation is that NONE of those people knew each other. It was obvious if you paid attention to their conversation that they were completely strangers, but they acted so casual that one could think they were old friends meeting after such a long time, which it clearly wasn't the case. They were just strangers in the train that find themselves in a similar situation with a similar background and that's it. Although, I think this might be more of a brazilian thing than anything. Still, my autistic introverted *ss can't process how easy it is for some to make friends with each other
I wish someone would do a story for after the main series when Aang comes back to Ba Sing Se after the King was back in control and he helps the Joo Di's reclaim their minds again. I imagine they would probably be relived the suffering is over and they can go back to their families again.
So one really cool thing about the Dai Li is that they were created by Avatar Kyoshi. She lived in a time of great division and with bandits and thieves running rampant. Also a series of coups. It's a whole thing. I highly recommend you read the books about her.
Somewhere out there in the multiverse the people that watched Avatar looked like Appa, and Ang was the whimsical pet. Mainly I think it would be cool to see Appa Earth/fire/water bend.
When I first watched this i was obsessed with earthbending because of Toph. I even used to mimic her hair style. I just thought it was so hardcore. But as I got older it became fire just because of it looking cool, and than it changed to water and now it's Air, because I feel not only air can be strong but you can fly. That and any time i take a quiz i always get the personality of air XD All bubbly and stuff
@Sorta Stupid So originally that scene with long shot pointing his bow and arrow 🏹 down the hallway. He was actually supposed to be pointing it down at jet to put him out of his misery. But nickelodeon didn't want that because they thought it was to dark both for the show and for the studios image. So they changed that scene to having long shot pointing it down the hallway instead.
Well, they destroy the drill from the inside, So Azula is trying to do the same by destroying the earth kingdom from the inside too.. Pretending to be the kyoshi warriors is the way to get to the inside.. So there is a reason they show them defeating kyoshi warriors on the appa day lost episode. Such a clever storyline..
Has anybody told them about the little chibi Avatar shorts? They are so so adorable and it would give them something else to watch after the show is complete
So I heard long ago that the creators confirmed Jet died under Lake Laogai. And that his friend who pulled and notched the arrow did mercy kill him. They were just not allowed to show it on television because of Nickelodeon which is fair.
literally the whole fight of them going up to the earth king is ridiculously satisfying to watch every time and i love it so much ugh its so good. also some info to digest: the earth king functions like actual royalty in I believe china? so he does not interact with anyone outside the palace and does not leave the kingdom either because he is considered like a god (metaphorically and literally). I believe in some old story concepts and stuff never explicitly explained the earth king of ba sing se is such a big deal because he has a large connection with the spirits and can actually ward them off with his presence alone
S2 E18 shows *why* the combination of all the elements is so damn dangerous. They didn't even have fire at this point, and they still obliterated the earth king's palace guard force.
If you're wondering Jet is dead it was confirmed in the extras for the DVD release and in the sequel comic "The Promise" we see the group again but without Jet they couldn't say on the show because it's still a kid's show (one that can be dark) but yeah he's dead
According to an old source I don’t know is true or not, it’s been a few years and I can’t find it anymore, the scene were Jet is on the ground and Longshot draws his bow towards a door was originally going to have Longshot aim at Jet like a mercy killing. This was allegedly changed because Nickelodeon thought it was too dark. Again, don’t know if this was ever true, but I heard it a long time ago and thought it’s interesting to bring up.
There was a deleted scene that was considered too dark for Nick where Longshot drew his Bow and aimed it at Jet implying he's going to put him out of his pain. They changed it to have Longshot drawing his bow in case any more Dai Lee agents were coming Jet is absolutely Dead, Long Fang broke his ribs in with that strike

In the original ending Longshot was supposed to draw his bow on Jet after Jet nods to him. What everyone expected when he started drawing. Jet is gone.
8:29 sokka big brain moments are the best
Them storming the castle is one of my favorite scenes in the whole show.
It’s crazy watching this as a kid when it originally was airing it felt like forever from when Appa had been separated from group till they found him.
The whole scene with Iroh and Zuko, Iroh was spitting facts🔥
Great lmao
It's getting real saucy in here! Love the buildup for the season 2 finale.
Iroh confronting Zuko with some cold hard facts makes my day
I heard somewhere they originally wanted to have Longshot aim towards Jet as a kind of "mercy shot" but thought it would be too dark for children
I've heard that originally Longshot originally wasn't going to be shown guarding the door and instead was going to mercy kill Jet but that was quickly changed. I can't find anything to confirm this though.
“I missed you, buddy.” 😭
Jet absolutely dead. I’ve heard that Originally they wanted to have long shot aim his bow at jet suggesting a mercy kill, but they determined too dark for nick so left it a little more vague
27:35
Fun fact:
Earth king Kuei was modeled after Puyi, the last emperor of China.
Zukos positivity flu gets me every time 😂
The detail in the show is just crazy even in the small line of The earth king thinking Sokka is the Avatar.
They really do have the anime endings with the cliffhangers every episode
Team Avatar searched for Appa for _weeks._ Zuko finds him off of a missing bison poster in under 48 hours 😂
20:45 Especially since Toph is blind
I never thought blind people have such sense of humor irl
By the time I've arrived in the station I needed to get off, some of them asked me to help them to board off the train.
Well, they destroy the drill from the inside,
So Azula is trying to do the same by destroying the earth kingdom from the inside too..
I believe in some old story concepts and stuff never explicitly explained the earth king of ba sing se is such a big deal because he has a large connection with the spirits and can actually ward them off with his presence alone
i would do anything just to have A TENTH of the badassery that Toph possesses😭
S2 E18 shows *why* the combination of all the elements is so damn dangerous. They didn't even have fire at this point, and they still obliterated the earth king's palace guard force.
Y'know... Jet's story is so tragic. He's so young
Katara just helped with the pain, her healing can't undo brainwashing or anything like that xD
The BOOOOUUULDER was actually voiced by professional wrestler, Mick Foley. And I always thought that was pretty cool.
I love how Toph doesn't turn her head when she points at things. Bc why would she, right? What an attention to detail!
There was a deleted scene that was considered too dark for Nick where Longshot drew his Bow and aimed it at Jet implying he's going to put him out of his pain. They changed it to have Longshot drawing his bow in case any more Dai Lee agents were coming
Jet is absolutely Dead, Long Fang broke his ribs in with that strike
9:37 This cut is perfect, and I dunno if it was done like that intentionally, but good job either way. Got a good laugh out of me.😂
Alright, time to get this over with 😅
I paused because _Crossroads of Destiny_
11:34 yess the sequences coming up
Esp Toph being yanked, Jet grabbing her, Long Shot follow-up
12:51 cute and then...here we go...
16:09 and it _was_
21:53 the stairs, the stairs, the _stairs_
23:30 idek how to explain any of this onward aaa I'm gonna fold my homework or something
25:52 I can hear ah
478 hhh
31:23 CAN WE SAY _HI_
31:45 im gonna stay here in the comments
34:02 and her little motif-tone wooo
I mean Ba Sigh Se is basically China
2:53 and again noticing something new. Appa is such a sweat guy he is flying a bit so they dont have to do as much :^) what a cuti
Thought short gasp was warranted. It was confirmed the archer was going to kill Jet out of mercy, but Nickolodeon wouldn't allow them to show or directly allude to a teenager being killed in such a manner.
“I hear Miracle Whip is the best [mayonnaise].” Remember, Miracle Whip is not a mayonnaise, it is only a dressing. :)
I can't rewatch Lake Laogai the same way anymore because of just only recently finding out who voices Long Feng. If you don't already know, you're actually watching another Nickelodeon show with him in it (still can't believe Avatar is a freaking Nick show):
Joo Dee, me boy, the Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai ARGAGAGAGAGAGAGA
At least Miracle Whip doesn't just taste like Dry Sawdust Mixed with Glue, most of the mayonnaise out there is dry and bitter.
Not sure how true this is but apparently it was originally intended for longshot to aim his bow at Jet to imply he was gonna mercy kill him, but Nickelodeon thought it was too dark
It’s so crazy that on RUclips they’re still in avatar season 2 😭
Mako finished season 2 but in between season 2 and 3 during that break he pass away .. dnt let the rumors make you think that was his last episode it wasnt
I’m so hype! The book two finale is MY FAVORITE!!!
I heard Long Shot pulling out his arrow was gonna be Jets mercy kill but understandably it was too dark for Nickolodeon.
Dobe by sayeing "I dont have time for this" while doing nothing 80% of day.
"IT'S TIME TO LOOK INWARD AND BEGIN ASKING YOURSELF THE BIG QUESTIONS!!!"
*"WHO ARE YOU,AND WHAT DO YOU WANT?!?!?!?!"*
Toph is so funny when making jokes about her blindness.
1:23 You had a debate about heated mayonnaise? Yeah, whichever brand you prefer, mayo should _always_ be served _cold!_ 😛
Long Fang: Knock knock
Jet: Who’s there?
Long Fang: Not you! *turns Jet to burger meat*
Now, every time I saw Xin Fu I hear "THE BOULDER!"😂
"Who are you?"
I'm Lindana
"And what do you want?"
And I wanna have fun.
