My 1st Irish whiskey was Red Breast 12 year. I had never had an Irish and pointed to a bottle at a liquor store and told my wife I loved the look of the bottle. 2 days later I wake up and there’s a bottle on the table. I think she’s a keeper. Love, love love Irish whiskey. My son bought me some green spot for Christmas but I’ve not cracked it open yet…… I think this evening is the time. Not had it before.

I'm retired from an Irish company (huge here in the states). Irish whiskeys have a special place in my liquor cabinet. Among my Irish colleagues, the decision was: Bushmills? or Redbreast? And if you chose Bushmills, you were fired.
My favorites - Redbreast 15 and Green Spot. I hope to sample the Redbreast 27, based on your reviews of it - we'll see. My Irish colleagues were partial to the Redbreast 12 over the 15 ... but it's not even close for me - the 15! It's the smoothest single pot still whiskey I've yet tried, with all of the notes you described.
Green Spot? Of my three go-to every day drinkers - this one is king. So clean, yet not sacrificing flavor. The beautiful light golden color reminds me that it's not gonna be a bourbon sugar bomb. But it's close to my heart as one evening my wife and I were chatting with the bartender in our hotel bar in Dublin regarding the best Irish Whiskey to give to an Irishman for a good deed he'd done for me. After a lot of chatting about a variety of whiskeys, the guy across the bar spoke up and said "Green Spot ... get him Green Spot, any Irishman would appreciate that" and the bartender quickly added his support. So that was that. After the guy across the bar had left, the bartender asked me if I knew who had recommended the Green Spot. "No. Should I have?" That was Dave ... you know ... The Edge. I hadn't recognized him - this was in 2008, and I was used to the long-haired pony-tailed Edge. The guy across from me was clean cut, shorthaired Edge. Anyhoo ... that was my introduction to Green Spot. The guy I gave it to? Didn't like it ... Probably a Bushmill's guy.

I was going to say, I've been through 3 bottles of Black Bush and although at the lower end of the proof (80), it is an absolute steal. Ahh, Irish Whiskey, now you're in my lane. I like that you have gold label on here. In Ireland, every bar I was in had Powers. Nothing special, just a staple like Bushmills, but always scratches that itch. I love Redbreast as well. I always use the 12yr in some of my specialty cocktails. If you like the single pot still route and ever come cross Green Spot or Yellow Spot, give those a try for sure. I'm really surprised you didn't have Tullamore Dew on here. I would put it up against Powers, Jameson and Bushmills all day. It really doesn't get the credit it deserves.
I know you said there isn't a large selection in your area, but if you have a good relationship with your liquor store, they can order you anything that their distributers offer (probably Southern Glazer's or Republic). That being said, if you want some of the best Ireland has to offer, Midleton is a powerhouse. Also I saw the recent Rye episode, and heard Trent talk about how much he loved that "dusty" note. I have the cream of the crop for you. I was in Seattle about 8 years ago at the Canon Whiskey and Bitters Emporium (Largest Whiskey Selection in the US) and I tried the best Irish Whiskey I have ever had. Talk about "Dusty"! It was like an old rickety wooden room with sheets over the furniture! It was the 17yr by Knappogue Castle. HARD to find, but hands down a grail bottle for any Irish Whiskey fan.
A little tidbit: Most Irish Whiskey is unmalted and malted barley because the British taxed malted barley, so by using unmalted, they dodged the tax (crafty bastards) so technically, your single malt Irish is more along the lines of the original Irish Whiskeys. But you gotta give those Irish Monks credit because If it weren't for them, you wouldn't have Poitin, without Poitin, you wouldn't have Moonshine, without Moonshine, you wouldn't have Bourbon. Sorry for the novel, but I love Irish Whiskey. If you've read this far, I appreciate it, haha. 🥃

Thanks for this video, Kurt and Trenton.
I've loved Irish whiskey for many years. My intro was Jameson, as it is for many. I've broadened my horizon since there. Like you, my town has one decent dram shop. Its Irish selection is limited, but decent: most of what you mentioned and more. I've never seen Three Swallow, Bushmill's 21, or Redbreast 27 there.
Paddy's ($20 in my area) has been a good daily sipper for a long time. The price is definitely right. Redbreast 12 and 12 Cask Strength are nice treats.
Maybe some day we'll get lucky and find the whole Spot, Dingle, Connemara and Glendalough line-ups.
    Slàinte!

    Enjoyed this video.
For me, it would have been Paddy, Powers Gold, Connemara, Connemara Cask Strength, Green Spot and Red Breast 21. Paddy is under $20 locally, Powers Gold $30, Connemara $45, Connemara Cask (not available locally, but can be found for about $80), Green Spot $50, and Red Breast 21 (also not available locally, but over $200 and as much as $300 when it can be found). I have not had Powers Three Swallow, and Bushmills 21.
The difference between Green Spot and Three Swallow is $7 here, and I began drinking Green Spot when it was not imported into the U.S. Green Spot is delicious, easy sipping, mild but flavorful whiskey. And, one of my best whiskey experiences happened when I went to the J. Mitchell & Son store in Dublin to buy a few bottles of Green Spot. So, picking it is an easy choice.
Any high end Red Breast is a great pick, as is the normal 12. Locally I can find it was 12, 12 Cask Strength, Lustau Cask, and 15. I have had the 21, and it was fabulous.
Single Pot Still Whiskeys are so good. We need more of them.
The Connemara is great, imo, because of it's texture. The whiskey almost feels like the lightest oil in the world as it glides over the tongue.
Paddy, cheap, traditional buttery, cookie flavors, and well-balanced without much heat for a young whiskey. Powers Gold is a good stuff, but rising in price since the hipsters started to drink it. Miss when it was close to Paddy in price. Also, never mind having Jameson, or the Jameson Stout Cask, which I had this week.

    • @slbdrinks

What an amazing experience to visit the home of the spots in Dublin! Wow! All great whiskeys! I have yet to see any Connemara so hopefully soon.

@@slbdrinks Thanks. The amazing part of my visit there was what they gave me to taste. Whiskeys that I doubt I will ever be able to taste again.
I do recommend trying the Connemara. The ppm (how much peat smoke particles it has) is really low compared to money Islay whiskys, but still very pronounced in its flavor, more peat flavor than Bunnahabbain, imo. But, it has none of the brineyness, no iodine, no saltiness, etc. I have met few whiskey drinkers that have tried it and did not enjoy it.

I'm following your videos closely, and so I've ordered a trio of Irish whiskeys - not all of them for the first time. The first one was a first for me though: GREEN SPOT CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE BARTON. Natural colour, non-chill filtered at 46% ABV. It's lovely, it really is - AS LONG AS you don't expect actual wine(y) flavours. Matured in 75% Bourbon casks and 25% Oloroso Sherry for 7-10 Years, then finished for 12-24 months in Bordeaux casks. The nose shows dominant vanilla frosting, pears, cherries, mild citrus, dark cherries, alcohol and oak. On the palate, again vanilla frosting will hit you first, followed by cherries and pears, cinnamon, honey, and oak. Long, mildly alcoholic finish with oak, honey, cinnamon. No.2, already familiar TEELING SINGLE MALT, bottled at 46% ABV. A no-age statement whisk(e)y, matured and finished in 6 different types of casks (ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, ex-Port, ex-Madeira, white Burgundy and Cabernet) - presumably to achieve higher complexity on a spirit that is rumoured to have spent 4-7 years in these casks before bottling.Citrus, white grapes, dried figs, and a little caramel on the nose. Sweet lemon at first on the palate, accompanied by white wine notes, baked apple, cinnamon, vanilla - with dry oak tannins only in the finish. Quite lovely, especially as part of a chaser with American Pale Ale.

Powers gold used to be even cheaper. Was the best secret in whiskey. Secret got out and they raised the price but it's still an excellent buy, and the best of the entry Irish whiskeys. Has a unique flavor that i've never been able to put my finger on that separates it from the rest.

I spend some serious money on a bottle of whisky, but I don’t agree that you should not expect much for a $25 blended whisky. There are many whisky’s at or below which are VERY good
