Lol, I'm older than that and have no degree because I could never decide on anything. If you want to do it, go for it. Being 30 and in medicine is an accomplishment! 😁👍

Then say "bye" as if your opinion was validated somehow? You are the reason I believe in building up my fellow women instead of breaking them down. You should educate yourself and grow up. And it depends on what school you go to and the scholarships you get. I'd say average medical school debt is probably 100-200k which isn't great but I doubt anyone has a half a million in debt...
Im currently am studying for pharmacist. And I must say having a good job in the medical world is so worth it! And don't worry You dont need to be a genius, just work hard for it and it Will be fine.
This inspires me so much. I started to watch her show, Dr Pimple Popper, at age 10. Right after I knew I wanted to be a dermatologist. It taught me a bit considering I knew nothing about dermatology. She taught me about cysts, lipomas, dermoid cysts, keloids, and more. Thank you so much Sandra Lee! :)
this made me gain much more respect for Dr. Sandra Lee. i have always been interested in dermatology, but my only concern is how competitive it is, and the cost of school and residency. i am a freshman in highschool, so i still have time, but im excited to hopefully continue my interest!
I dream of working as a dermatologist but now I'm extremely worried that, because it is such a selective position, I will not be able to achieve this. Also, it takes a long time!

I am in my second year of college and I'm gonna get my bachelor's degree in biology. So then I can get into med school at the university of Arkansas. I'm really dedicated to becoming a dermatologist and I'll stop at nothing to become one.
@@isabelladiaz124 this comment aged very poorly. After covid had hit, the stress from online science classes and advanced math made me really question if it was worth it. I decided to make a very hard decision and switch my majors and then take a break from school for a semester. I changed to history where I now want to study the history of medicine and medicinal practice. I am going to the University of Arkansas now so I didn't totally fail.
Dr. Sandra Lee, you're awesome! You're helping people work towards their passion! Growing up with bad acne, I've experienced 2 unprofessional dermatologists! Would definitely hope there's fellow Pimple Poppers out there who will take over the dermatology world professionally and with a passion like yours! 👏🏽🙌🏽💪🏽
You can always do an 18 month program and become an aesthetician. It will cost 20-30k to go to a good school though. Depending on what state u live in you can do a certain amount of pimple and blackhead popping. I’ve noticed on Dr Lee’s videos they have one in her office who does facial and there are only certain tools they can use but each state has it own rules. I have a friend who got hers after 30. She already had a degree and career but wanted to try something new. She does it PT at a salon and works on sets for photo shoots in NYC and makes good money as a side hustle. She was lucky and only paid 18k for school as they were just opening that year and were waiting for a accreditation so gave a deal for tuition.
I have learned that I have dermatillomania and there are many people like me thanks to your videos. I feel better and I understand my situation better right now.I actually watched your videos for hours,, they are so nice for people like me.. please keep making them :)
Hello guys, I am majoring in Biology rn and I’m finishing up my fall semester. I plan to become a dermatologist and to any of you who are Inspired I wish you good luck and prosperity, don’t give up!💯
you are my inspiration...when i feel like giving up, i just watch one of your videos and I'm back on the road. My dream is to be a dermatologist that specializes on moms and cosmetics. Thank you Dr.Lee.
Worth Mentioning (Canadian Version) 1. Undergrad GPA 3.8-4.0 (my class average was 3.93) (3-4 yrs) 2. Med School (3-4 yrs) 3. Residency (5 years) 4. Fellowship (1-2 years each) At all stages volunteering, research (derm specific), exceptional clinical skills, etc are usually required.
I work for a dermatology lab. I'm a transcriptionist for 3 dermatopathologists. I love my job and I love your YT channel. I get to see what I type all day. 💕
Hi Dr Lee, I just got into a NP Derm program. I absolutely love it and wanted to do this specialty as soon as I graduated in 2010. No one was willing to train me. I had to move far from home to obtain this training. You are correct that it VERY DIFFICULT specialty to get into, and you really have to be persistent. I always like to watch your You Tube channel and whenever you are on The Doctors TV show. Thank You
Hey, I am actually a med student, and hope you actually read this. I love watching your educational videos as I love the field of dermatology and learn so much watching you work. It is really fun to relax and watch your videos in between study sessions. I really wish I could go into dermatology, but I have failed a course during M1/2 and am at the bottom third of my class. Derm is such a great specialty, and I am often disappointed that I am shut out of such a great specialty at such a early point in my medical career. Without going into much detail on this public comment section, I truly believe I could make a big difference going into derm and have a meaningful career in medicine. I am thinking about doing IM and then rematching into derm. But, I hear that is a risky proposition because I could then be stuck doing IM or being a hospitalist, which isn't exactly what I want to do. I admire what you do, and I guess I will always have to live vicariously through you and other dermatologists.
@@ashleyreyes9946 I ended up just doing internal medicine. Not my favorite. I just see it as a job, like plumbing or any other trade. We all make crappy compromises in life.
I just walked up one day thinking I would like to be a doctor, to be specific a dermatologist since I am an allergic kind of person. But knowing that it will cost lots of money and wise studying, I doubt if I should really take it...
after watching this, this makes me want to be a dermatologist even more! this is my dream job! I can't wait to get into college and start my career. im so excited for my future❤️
Thank you so much Dr. Sandra Lee! I really appreciate these helpful and thoughtful pieces of advice! I plan on going through college to become a doctor but, more specifically a dermatologist. For the past several years I have also been researching the time and requirements that are necessary in becoming a dermatologist. Luckily, I stumbled upon this video of yours (I've been a subscriber for a long time now:) ) and it has truly clarified my understanding of the road to becoming a doctor and I just wanted to say thank you so much for the video!!!!! - Mason Bower
love your work. wish we had more passionate dermatologists like you. i went to a dermatologist once for a bump on my leg and she dismissed it as a scar even tho i told her it wasnt. needless to say, i went home and pulled a rock out of my leg. 😆
This makes me a little nervous, but I love helping others grow in their self esteem and learning about different skin care products. I just hope that after all that schooling and money I would be content!
I will never forget watching this for the first time in middle school, I’m going to be a junior in high school now and I haven’t changed my mind about my career ☺️
Bless you for your dedication to your education and for your compassion to your patients. I have struggled for years with basal cell and I have been lucky enough to find a wonderful dermatologist in my area. I also have heard from others that haven't had the same kind of care I have. Love You -keep up the great work and videos!
Thank you for this! My children have a bit of a fascination with the visual satisfaction that comes along with your videos. Additionally, my oldest (13 yrs) has told me she wants to meet you in person. My assumption is that she may have a desire to "have your job". HOPEFULLY this video and further education into the many facets of the field will help her decide. Again, Thank You!
If I could, I would like this a million times! I have been wanting to be a dermatologist ever since I was in fourth grade. I was just watching RUclips videos and I found you, and now I'm totally addicted! I have been working really hard in school to get into a good college. My life goal is to become a dermatologist. Want to know who inspired me? YOU! I wish the best of luck and thank you for being such an inspiration on me. :-)
Thank Dr Lee! Love your channel and so glad you made this video about what it takes to become a Dermatologist, so much more than popping pimples, it's a very vast field with so many avenues and requires dedication, passion and drive to accomplish. Love that you show under the micro biopsy so interesting, keep the videos coming!!
Awesome video....you are a great ambassador for medicine and dermatology in particular.i hope some watching this will make it through what I reckon are at least 12 years of phenomenally hard work at a level of academic attainment that is beyond many peoples imagining! I have a degree from Cambridge in England and post graduate qualifications, so quite good but nowhere near what medics have to do.Sadly I think many of the people who comment " I want to be a dermatologist" have no idea what your training has been and actually think as a dermatologist they will get to spend their days popping blackheads if only they have your job. In reality all they want to be an aesthetician ...and they have a really distorted view of what dermatologists do.
I am not sure how I ever got linked to your channel but I am so glad I did! I live in a rural area in Kansas. I am working toward my DNP and after watching you I am considering dermatology. I just love you and your bedside manner with elderly people is an inspiration. Would love to see even more interesting or unusual cases, even if they don't generate the views that pimple popping does. Thanks!
I'm not interested in becoming a dermatologist, BUT I have enrolled myself in to school for Medical Assisting in hopes of being able to work in a dermatology office. I'm subscribed to your channels, and they/Dr. Lee is the main reason I decided to go back to school. I love all the videos, and I feel like I could do sutures with my eyes closed lol. Hopefully when I graduate I will get the opportunity to work for a dermatologist. In the meantime, I will continue to watch Dr. Pimple Popper every chance I get!!! 😊
I love this video! I was inspired by your videos and either want to be a dermatologist or a geneticist. Thanks for breaking down all your years of schooling. I knew you had to go to med school after university and that you had to get residency but I didn't know how long exactly so this was helpful.
sakurabender Im kind of worried that you spend all your life in school , like life is only one time and i feel like I wont cherish it by being so busy and studying hard . Especially in 20's . Could i still have kids at age 33? I dont know ): someone give advice
Questions: 1. She talks about college or university, by that she means the 4 years after high school, correct? 2. Do you have to get any specific degree or take any specific classes in high school or college to get into medical school? 3. How does medical school work? 4. Do you study general things or specific things during medical school? (Like do you focus on specific body parts or topics) 5. Do you get paid when you become a resident for a dermatology program? 6. Do you usually have to work while go to school to afford your education? 7. Do you have the time and money to still enjoy life? I have more but these are basic ones 😅
I don’t know everything about schooling for medicine, but I can answer a few questions: 1.) When she was talking about university/college, she was talking about the education she got after high school 2.) You don’t need a specific major to get into medical school. It’s all about your MCAT score, and people from many different majors take the MCAT. If you know you want to go into medical school right away after university, you would want to opt for a pre-med program at your university to study for the MCAT. Pre-med programs specialize in classes that will best ready you for the exam, but you can also do well on the MCAT through a biology or chemistry major. These tests scores from your MCAT will determine your fate at med school. 3/4.) From my understanding, general med school teaches you the basics of medicine. Many doctors have similar procedural stuff that overlaps across fields. That that means is if you go to a medical school, most people will start by gaining the basic knowledge first. After 4 years at medical school, you choose an area you wish to specialize in and work to get your education so you can take another test to become board certified (depending on the specialization you choose after med school, you could be taking another form of test). After you pass your boards, you will be considered a certified doctor and can choose where you want to work. I’m not sure about 5, 6, and 7 since I actually haven’t gone through the process yet, but I hope the rest of this was helpful! Good luck!
1. Yes 4 years after high school. 2. Any degree but must take required prerequisite classes like chemistry, bio, physics, organic chem and get As in them 3. Med school is 4 years of pain. 2 years of academics. 2 years of clinical work. 4. General. 5. Yes paid. 40 to 50 grand. Not much. 6. Not much time to work during med school. 7. Persepctive. You have spring break. Summer and winter. But summer you do research. So mot much free time.

Hi Dr.Lee, my boyfriend of 4 years is going to medical school and I'm graduating from nursing school this year (we are both 22). I follow you on snapchat, and I think you mentioned you had kids. I'm just wondering when you were able to start your family, get married, etc? I'm sorry if this is personal, I don't want anything to get in the way of his and mine's education/careers but i also wonder how that all can be juggled 😳
loveleii10 She was 46 in 2016 she finished her schooling at the age of 33 and now has two young boys. I think one is a baby under 1 year old and the eldest is 9 So maybe she had her first at 37 after she was completely done with her schooling and already working. She took over her fathers dermatology practice in CA. When he retired, she started her first day on the job. She didn't have kids until after she started working at the family's practice. It's safe to conclude she didn't have to balance family, work and education, because she didn't form a family until she completed her specialized degree. Hope this helps.
Well.. I am an Engineer and my wife is a doctor.. She was just starting her CRRI (compulsory rotary residency internship) after 4 yrs of medical school, when we got engaged and got her medical degree a year later. Total 5 yrs. and at the end we got married. She is preparing for her exams to get into a medical school for her specialization. She is gonna be 26 now and me 30. We are planning to start trying to have a child by this year end. And she is planning to take her specialization (which is 3 yrs) along with it. So since you are 22 only now, I think you have plenty of time. We are Indians btw

I feel like I may wait and get more experience in my career and get my masters before following up. Having a family would be great but I want to make sure nothing is rushed :)

To everyone who is scared of going to school for 13/15 years... who cares? If it's your passion, DO IT. I joined the military at 18- got sent to England, currently work in a hospital as a certified drug and alcohol abuse counselor as a 22 yr old(still in England). I did about 2 years of college compressed into 3 months. Im working 10 hour days in direct patient care at the hospital & then going to school at night for 3-5 hours. I had average grades in HS but if I can do that, anyone can apply him/herself. I decided that staying in the mental health & substance abuse career field isnt for me and would love to be the next dr. pimple popper. If what you're pursuing isnt a challenge, then it doesnt seem worth it to me.
in britain there is a bbc programme the diagnosis detectives of 12 experts nephrology, haematology, rheumatology, etc and what has been outstanding is the foremost role the dermatologist dr sharon wong is playing in helping diagnose people's longstanding and debilitating conditions which so far have not been solved. like detectives.. she really has a comprehensive knowlege that is interconnecting with the other disiplines. i think dermatology has really gone up in the esteem of her peers.

And it depends on what school you go to and the scholarships you get. I'd say average medical school debt is probably 100-200k which isn't great but I doubt anyone has a half a million in debt...
dont poke at something you know nothing about :) I'm sure dermatologist make a lot more money than you.
Alexis Marshall omg dentist are is so much more debt.
Im currently am studying for pharmacist. And I must say having a good job in the medical world is so worth it! And don't worry You dont need to be a genius, just work hard for it and it Will be fine.
vigenlona needed to here this!
vigenlona thank you
Says a genius 🙄
"it is a competitive position"
me:"oh I'm all about competition BRING IT ON"
love this energy !! good luck!!
Sandra Lee. i have always been interested in dermatology, but my only concern is how competitive it is, and the cost of school and residency. i am a freshman in highschool, so i still have time, but im excited to hopefully continue my interest!
you are so great, you give dermatology a great name and really showcase that it is not a boring occupation
Love your videos. What differentiates you is the caring way in which you interact with your patients!
She’s simply amazing and has such a calming confident way about her! I would choose her in a heartbeat!
Could you explain the PA side of dermatology? That would be so helpful!
I am only 12 but I really love the work dermatologist do, I really wanna be a dermatologist when im older!
I dream of working as a dermatologist but now I'm extremely worried that, because it is such a selective position, I will not be able to achieve this. Also, it takes a long time!
Tiaka Masala if u rly love it, dont mind the obstacles nd do it cuz ull b happier at the end. I wanted to b a dermatologist but wasnt good in sciences and maths despite all my efforts. So if u have the potential, go for it!
Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you are always right.
Make sure it's you're actual dream.
Dr Sandra, you are so full of love, I like when you hug your patients after the surgical operation.
I just want to THANK YOU for NOT having cheesy music playing with your videos!! I have tried watching some other Dr's videos who do the same thing and the music drives me up the wall
I am in my second year of college and I'm gonna get my bachelor's degree in biology. So then I can get into med school at the university of Arkansas. I'm really dedicated to becoming a dermatologist and I'll stop at nothing to become one.
Good luck! Hope you become one and live your dreams! ^^
Wow!! How have you been now?!
@@maxwilson422how are you now?
@phiesophy I got my degree on psychology
You have a fan from Pakistan🙋. I have graduated from med school here and now plan to specialize in Dermatology. (God willing)
How long does it takes to become one in Pakistan?!
You are my 10 year old's hero. She wants to be a dermatologist when she grows up because of your videos. She gets so excited to watch your videos
I’m so scared idk what to do with my life

I have learned that I have dermatillomania and there are many people like me thanks to your videos. I feel better and I understand my situation better right now.I actually watched your videos for hours,, they are so nice for people like me.. please keep making them :)
Clearly a very motivated and intelligent woman but her best skills are her manner with her patients.... she is amazing with her patients.......

1. Undergrad GPA 3.8-4.0 (my class average was 3.93) (3-4 yrs)
2. Med School (3-4 yrs)
3. Residency (5 years)
4. Fellowship (1-2 years each)
At all stages volunteering, research (derm specific), exceptional clinical skills, etc are usually required.
I work for a dermatology lab. I'm a transcriptionist for 3 dermatopathologists. I love my job and I love your YT channel. I get to see what I type all day. 💕
Your work would be very interesting, no? It sounds fascinating!
Where are you now?
@@ashleyreyes9946 I ended up just doing internal medicine. Not my favorite. I just see it as a job, like plumbing or any other trade. We all make crappy compromises in life.
I just walked up one day thinking I would like to be a doctor, to be specific a dermatologist since I am an allergic kind of person.
But knowing that it will cost lots of money and wise studying, I doubt if I should really take it...
I am in esthetician school and I am soooo looking forward to continuing my education in dermatology... this is my calling I feel it 💗💗
YAY I FINALLY FOUND MY CHANNEL! THANKS DR, I WILL BE A DERMATOLOGIST!
It's one of the hardest specialties to get into
I applaud the positivity you share with your work. A great role model.
after watching this, this makes me want to be a dermatologist even more! this is my dream job! I can't wait to get into college and start my career. im so excited for my future❤️
YOU DR. LEE .....are a national treasure! 🥰🥰🥰
Excellent explanation. I will remember this is here, to point people to it who are wondering about this. Thanks for doing this, Dr. Lee.
Luckily, I stumbled upon this video of yours (I've been a subscriber for a long time now:) ) and it has truly clarified my understanding of the road to becoming a doctor and I just wanted to say thank you so much for the video!!!!!

love your work. wish we had more passionate dermatologists like you. i went to a dermatologist once for a bump on my leg and she dismissed it as a scar even tho i told her it wasnt. needless to say, i went home and pulled a rock out of my leg. 😆
I admire the people who have the ability to become doctors and surgeons.
You are the BEST.... you have the personality to make everyone feel special..
you are so great, you give dermatology a great name and really showcase that it is not a boring occupation :)
A Doctors life is their job if you think that you will be wasting your time than you probably will be.
Questions:
1. She talks about college or university, by that she means the 4 years after high school, correct?
2. Do you have to get any specific degree or take any specific classes in high school or college to get into medical school?
3. How does medical school work?
4. Do you study general things or specific things during medical school? (Like do you focus on specific body parts or topics)
5. Do you get paid when you become a resident for a dermatology program?
6. Do you usually have to work while go to school to afford your education?
7. Do you have the time and money to still enjoy life?
I have more but these are basic ones 😅
I don’t know everything about schooling for medicine, but I can answer a few questions:
1.) When she was talking about university/college, she was talking about the education she got after high school
2.) You don’t need a specific major to get into medical school.
2. Any degree but must take required prerequisite classes like chemistry, bio, physics, organic chem and get As in them
Good question
I've been interested in cosmetic dermatology for while now and this video helped thank you Dr.Lee
I’m beginning my long medical journey in a few week at 34 y/o!
This is very encouraging for me.

I love to hear your voice and advices, please make more video like this one, I really love it! I am in medical school in Europe and also want to become a dermatologist! :)
You are a fantastic role model for the kids. Keep up the great work. Love your videos
Thank you so much for answering these questions! I am a current college 1st year student and dermatology is something I am looking into ! I would like to know more in detail as so what you majored on and your experience throughout your path for dermatology. It is a career that excites me alot and its something I found myself sort of being fascinated about! im afraid that I won't take the correct classes and waste my time , please , if possible, make a more detailed video with options...Thank you! Much Love !!! XoXo
Can you and Erin your PA make a video on how to become a PA in dermatology?
Could you have one of your assistants do this type of video?
Finally, someone who broken it down. Amazing
+loveleii10 yes i totally want this answered!!
Same!!!!!!! This is one of the best questions!
loveleii10 She was 46 in 2016 she finished her schooling at the age of 33 and now has two young boys.

Ohhh I see, thank you that did help me! I'm sorry I never got a notification to this earlier. I asked this question over a year ago and if there's anything that I've learned after graduating and getting my first professional job, is that everyone is going to move at different paces and that's okay! I feel like I may wait and get more experience in my career and get my masters before following up. Having a family would be great but I want to make sure nothing is rushed :)
I’m 18 now and I always loved learning about skin and I wanted to become a esthetician since I was 15 but now that I grew up I always wanted to become a dermatologist but a lot of people didn’t believe in me so I did really bad in hs and I regret it I’m doing amazing in my senior year I hope I get into college:(
You can do it. Apply to community colleges and state schools. Take biology classes, do well, and transfer to a med school. You can and you will do it ❤️❤️❤️
Very inspirational! Thanks for all of the advice and for a clarification of the roadmap!
Dermatologists are definitely at the top of the food chain when it comes to medical doctors. So...... I'll just watch your videos and live vicariously through you :D

I was wondering what degree your assistants have. I dont think I would like to be a dermatologist but a dermatology assistant sounds fun. I am currently a certified pharmacy tech and a certified respiratory therapist.
