  • Vanderbilt's Gordon Sargent has been turning heads in recent months due his impressive play and prodigious length off the tee. But how can a 170-pound, 20-year-old hit the ball nearly 400 yards off the tee? Where does his power come from? In this Film Study, our very own Luke Kerr-Dineen will explain Sargent's X-Factor.

    In his two PGA Tour starts this season, both majors (Masters and U.S. Open), Sargent has averaged 323.9 yards off the tee and 125.6 clubhead speed. Those numbers would rank second and third, respectively, on the PGA Tour.

      125mph head speed is moving it for sure. About 10 years ago another small golfer who hit it far was 2-time LDA champ Canadian Jamie Sadlowski at 145mph head speed. It would be good to see how Jamie's back is today. I am 5'10" and used to swing 134mph after 2 years of trying to build my swing speed, and my back is not completely falling apart, but if Sargent stays at 120-125mph then he might stay in the PGA for a while.

      @@WheelerRickRambles I am not sure, but Long Drivers typically don't have quite the feel or consistency for all of the other shots needed for golf at a high level. Many of them are scratch golfers or even low single digits, but asking them to put 4 good rounds together... it is just a matter of time for them to post a big number, thereby causing them to miss the cut. 1 degree off with drives of 380 yards... they'd be lucky if it was just in the trees instead of 3 fairways over.

    Years ago Rory McIlroy was criticized for working out with heavy weights. McIlroy defended this practice saying he was trying to protect his lower back because of his super fast hips. I remember Brandel Chamblee doing a deep dive on how McIlroy was ruining his body. Well, Chamblee was 100% wrong and McIlroy has had a very nice career.
    If Gordon Sargent wants an extended PGA Tour career, he will need to adopt some or all of McIlroy’s trading protocols.
    As an aside, there are many young golfers at my club that often hit their drives almost as far a Gordon Sargent. Call it the John Daly effect where a young golfer emulates a Daly swing verbatim. There’s a lot of Gordon Sargent type players coming up the next couple of years. Wonder why they’re rolling back the ball?

    Guys like Scheffler, JT , Speith , Rahm etc, who really have to literally jump out of their shoes to get the distance seem to have great short games to makeup for their wild shots. Gordon’s scores on great courses show he has more to his game than distance.

    Muscles don't get more powerful when they are stretched more, do they? A muscle is not really a spring. Tendons might act like a spring though. Anyway, X-factor doesn't explain higher club head speed, except in so far as the swing can be longer and faster when the wind up is greater. Sargent's power is probably based on muscle strength and leverage, and his height.

  • @gomer2813
    @gomer2813 6 месяцев назад

    Am I the only one who doubts that X-factor is really causing his power? Have you all ever twisted your body and measured how strong the recoil is? It is brief and relatively weak.
    My opinion is that the real source of his power is his legs and core - plus his steep torso angle. The legs and core are helping him to just turn faster and harder. The torso angle [at impact] allows him to get his chest pointed more towards the ball, which implies, his arms more in front of the chest and less "beneath" it. This allows one to "push"/release the club more like a bench press, and less like an awkwardly angled lat pulldown. Check the angle at 4:48 to see what I mean. Clearly, we are stronger at benchpress than angled lat pulldowns. So, he can release harder, this way.

  • @fwhites

    Its difficult to see but its his deceleration at the bottom that creates his amazing release. Its like cracking a whip or popping a towel but there no recoil because a club is much heavier so the hands and grip appear to keep moving. But, if you notice the club passes his hands at the same point of the swing everytime. Everyone will know him very soon!

Condition the tissues well enough and manage your loading properly and you won’t have issues

    Looks like the angle used to calculate the x-factor in this video wasn't right. It's actually the angle made in front or behind the person not to the sides. This would make more sense for trying to "increase" the angle rather than "decreasing" the angle with more trunk and pelvis separation.

    I saw him at the Walker Cup this year, very impressive. However, as other contributors have mentioned, he's heading for major back issues. It's happened to many players over the years, the pressure he's placing on his back is unbearable. Look at some of the top players who have been around a long time and don't appear to swing hard. Typically, Ernie Els. I'm sure he'll have some wear and tear but he's never put his back under so much tension. When Tiger Woods first came on the scene, it was immediately apparent he'd have issues further down the road. This fella's no diffent.

    Creating extreme angle between your shoulder turn and your hip turn, then very violently twisting them back is extremely bad and damaging to your body, not just your back! Besides, this ability has to come natural, if you simply imitate such movement without correct genetics you will not reach higher speed since you cannot cope and resynchronize the discrepancy of the two turning, this usually results in lower speed and open club face.
