I remember finding the article that made Karl think there was a dishwasher on Mars. It was just about a new telescope that had been built that was powerful enough that it could see a dishwasher on Mars. Karl took it a bit too literally 😆
Karl's mind and story telling is SO all over the place that it took me years to realise that according to Karl... the disco was abruptly ended to have a school assembly with a policeman 😂
I've always known 'sloth' pronounced 'slow-th' here in the UK. On the Mars stuff, Karl was talking about Beagle 2, which was a probe that was sent to Mars as part of a European mission in 2003. Because the probe was designed, built and managed in Britain there was quite a lot of publicity about it, and the project was led by a scientist called Colin Pillinger who became a bit of a public figure at the time because of his very engaging mix of enthusiasm, knowledge and eccentricity. The probe was supposed to land on Mars on Christmas Day but unfortunately something went wrong with the probe and it never transmitted. So in Karl's mind that becomes "a fella who said he could get stuff to Mars, but it all went wrong because he did it at Christmas and no one can be bothered to do a good job then", like he was building a rocket in his back garden and decided to try and launch it after Christmas dinner or something. A great example of how he can take in information and then retell it in a way that's basically right but then he layers his own take on it over the top.
I'm surprised to hear the way Karl pronounce sloth is the standard British way or pronouncing it as I live in the UK and the way we pronounce it where I'm from always pronounced it the way Mandy did

They'd usually get someones dad who did mobile discos to do one for about two hours after school Usually prom nights are reserved for secondary school/sixth form which would be about middle school/high school
I think of Karl as having 'random access memory' like a computer. It can't store a lot of information, it just stores like 10 different random things which he dips into. He doesn't have a hard drive to store all his memories, emotions and information he's learned and committed to his memory. Karl is like 10x more funny in animation form 😂 I think it’s because his views are so different that their almost cartoonish. He kinda suits being a cartoon. Ps: if your in the south of England you’ll pronounce sloth like Ricky does but if you’re in the north it’s more like Americans say it. I bet Karl says it the same way you guys do but ricky and Steve won’t
I am from the UK and I personally have always pronounced it sloth as apposed to slow-th, and a lot of people I know also pronounce it sloth. however I do also know people who pronounce it slow-th so I assume it varies depending on what media you was exposed to growing up and how people around you say it.
I think the usage of "sloth" as opposed to "slowth" might be an Americanism that's crept into British culture over the decades via films, music, and other media. I only ever hear the British say "slowth", and they are usually older British people as well, which makes me think that it's a traditional pronunciation that's perhaps falling out of usage with the younger generations.
@@DovahFett yes, I would have thought that too. I guess I would have picked it up from American television and just stuck with it, As no one really cared enough to go against it.
Hilarious Mandy 😂 I only have one baby photo of me,and I've got a really grumpy look.. my only reference.... My children's only reference is a black and white grumpy face photo 🤷
We say Sloth because it is Slow in movement. Another Good Episode and more Good Reactions. I can't remember, have you seen, '8 Out Of Ten Cats - The Great Mel Giedroyc's British Burp'. I think it was S14. 🙂
"There's still people dying, but not as many as there should be." Okay, Karl. Whatever you say. 😂 If my current self say my childhood self pass by, I'd be spooked. I'd be thinking The Twilight Zone actually happened. I'd be looking for Rod Serling.
Plenty of words pronounced differently in American English, but the real problem us in the UK run into is the different spellings. America removes a lot of superfluous letters from English words, and because lots of spell check software is American the English spelling is flagged as wrong, so we end up copying the American "simplified" English. English is slowly morphing into American, even over here.
Just a footnote: chimps DO have opposable thumbs..Not only that but they have big toes that are "opposed" (so to speak, I don't know what the adverb of that would be) to their other toes...and its the same with all simians especially monkeys: Monkeys feet are basically upside down hands which is why watching them climb trees is as entertaining as listening to karl.
You do seem much better now yay. I had noticed you changed colour a bit recently but I thought you were wearing different make up lol, so there is an obvious difference. I'm loving the cold weather. I walk in the countryside a lot and today the sky was perfectly blue and the ground frozen rock hard with pure white snow. So much better than grey skies and walking through mud which is how it usually is around here. Has been a nice change. I have a weather station in the garden and right now it's the coldest it has been for over 10 years here so i'm definitely glad i'm inside with my chocolate and cup of tea watching your amazing reactions. I reckon we would eventually evolve to have wings especially if we started flapping our arms around like crazy and standing on our tiptoes intensely wishing that we could fly. Doing that would probably speed up the process a bit but i'm sure it would still take many thousands of years. The way we will evolve in the future isn't set and depends on how we behave and what challenges the planet may have for us too. I do find it fascinating to think about that. Anyway lol this was soooo funny and entertaining. Never fails to deliver. 🤩🤗
18:20 I think it just depends on accent, I'm from North East, not far from Manchester where Karl's from, we say Sloth, I've heard people from Yorkshire and like Barnsley and what have you saying it like 'Slothe' before it's weird. But people say stuff different allover, like I imagine somebody from Texas or like Wyoming or somewhere would probably pronounce it similarly to Karl
It's weird I'm from the UK but never heard sloth pronounced "slow-th" except David Attenborough but apparently its common haha, I've always pronounced it how it's spelled
Oh yeah n you need to do idiot abroad soon, on the next eppisode ur about to watch is where they finally reveal to Karl that the program is called “an idiot abroad” 😂 poor guy haha
Karl is notoriously bad at remembering or estimating how old he would have been during supposedly notable times in his life. I'm sure he once recalled an incident during which he could have been anywhere between 3 and 12. I expect this school disco / fight thing was a middle school disco, like a junior prom. Probably his last year of middle school. I had a similar thing. He was probably 11. Not 7. Karl was still pooping in a litter tray full of tic-tacs at 7. And the assembly with the policeman? Almost certainly the next school day, not moments after the fight. I'm sure that makes a lot more sense. 😅
Discos aren’t the same as proms, but they’re like a mini party for kids lol. Sorta party where they play that stupid song that goes “aga do do do…” is anyone knows what song I’m referring to let me know lol
I've been listening to Ricky, Stephen and Karl for years. Not just the HBO but all their podcasts and the xfm radio stuff. Karl thinks things that no one else thinks. There are times I wonder, what planet is this guy from? But probably the craziest thing I've ever heard him say (next to a 78 yr old woman dying and has a pip inside of her and out pops a baby), was the death of Priness Diana can be contributed to flower shops because business was slow!! And as far as their pronunciation of sloth, thr Brits say their vowels differently than we do but, I've heard other Brits pronounce it the same way we do, and I've heard it pronounced the way Karl says it. I googled his monkey stories and discovered a guy who researched all his stories and found out they were all untrue....except one that is "based" on truth
I've always pronounced sloth the same way as you, so it also sounded weird to me too. Hopefully, one day after you catch up with your 3 year's worth of reactions to get through, you do sick of it, staring the Round headed buffoon, lol. You seem to have your mojo back, too. Xx
Mandy competed in the tanning Olympics and she got bronze! 😂 I absolutely love the Karl stories. A writer could take 3 or 4 of his thoughts and come up with a great science fiction novel.
You know I'm certain it wouldn't have been too unusual to have seen a policeman in a school disco in Manchester back in the 1970s. The place was nicknamed Gunchester after all. You're trying to follow Karl's thought process? Good luck with that, cause I've been following them since the XFM days and I still can't work him out. I was the 2nd of my mother's kids, my brother first in 1971 had hundreds of photos then he took the wrong road in life. I was in 1984 and I was the best kid in the family before my sister turned up in 1994 and she became the worst kid if us all and she has way more than my brother, my mother has photos of her all around the house and her own 3 kids scattered everywhere in frames, and I have ONLY ONE photo in the living room behind the door. I know how you feel my dear. You have to check out Rab C Nesbitt, a great Scottish TV show from the early 1990s.
If you rememeber whan you first started watching this show I told ya Karl's mind is like a child's in many ways. He has a very weak understanding of the concept of time in the long term, like when looking at over a century etc. What's sometimes scary is his ideas about Eugenics, because he means it, he thinks only certain people should be allowed to have children and pass on their genes. Let's just hope Karl's way of thinking doesn't become dominant in society, because a world run by Karl would be a dark dark place.
Another great reaction 👍. Just wanted to recommend another British TV series that's funny if you're interested. It's on RUclips and it's called "Game on" based on 3 room mates, one of them is a cool guy named Matt and a bit psycho but he's agoraphobic so he never leaves the flat. Funny stuff, just watching them today for the first time in ages and forgotten how good they were. FYI this was made in the 90s so it has some content like mild discrimination in 1 or 2 scenes and abit of sexism that wouldn't be allowed on TV today. Its nothing too heavy imo.
@@MandyCaneLane Yeah i know all the snowflakes and their cancel culture we have now dictating what we can and can't watch, really sick of those people! Like another classic British comedy called Fawlty Towers. My parents are Irish and there was one scene where Sybil Fawlty calls an Irish builder who made a right mess of the hotel a "thick Irish joke" she was pissed lol. Thing is I'm not asking for it to be cancelled because of 1 scene, it was made in the 70s and none of the characters are really that normal in it anyway. People need to chill out. I still watch to this day, one of my favourites!
I got into an argument with my wife once about the pronunciation of sloth. Turns out Sir David Attenborough pronounces it “slow-th”, which is the highest possible authority as far as I’m concerned!
@@MandyCaneLane David Attenborough is an incredibly popular TV zoologist in the UK: he’s 96 years old and still making nature documentaries, as he has been for 66 years now.
I guess I would have picked it up from American television and just stuck with it,
As no one really cared enough to go against it.
Maybe. Just sounded weird to me. And Ricky and Stephen accepted it 😅😅
Probably because Karl is northern. I’m Irish and I’ve heard Slowth and Sloth in equal measure throughout my life.
We had discos at the end of every year at school in the UK
I love random ! I loved it! Thxs! Congrats Argentina!

Spin the bottle as kids was normal but it wasn't like what you're imagining as in a very adult game. Was a lot more innocent and actually quite sweet.
Hilarious Mandy 😂
I only have one baby photo of me,and I've got a really grumpy look..
my only reference.... My children's only reference is a black and white grumpy face photo 🤷
Lmao! Did your parents camera break too?

Point of order Madam Chairman. Chimps do have opposable thumbs and a precision grip. Yet again Ricky and Steve show that they know less than Karl! 😂😈
We say Sloth because it is Slow in movement. Another Good Episode and more Good Reactions. I can't remember, have you seen, '8 Out Of Ten Cats - The Great Mel Giedroyc's British Burp'. I think it was S14. 🙂
Lol. I have no. Not yet anyway! Thanks Jamie!

As do I... haha
"There's still people dying, but not as many as there should be." Okay, Karl. Whatever you say. 😂
If my current self say my childhood self pass by, I'd be spooked. I'd be thinking The Twilight Zone actually happened. I'd be looking for Rod Serling.
Lmao! It would be a very scary thing to witness
😂😂😂
I had the same experience with the family photo, when I asked I was told that by the time I came along my dad had gotten bored with the camera.
Hate to break it to you, but we were old news! 😭😂
Karl does Thai boxing in s2 of An Idiot Abroad.
😂😂😂
Many - "I have a tan"
Me - turns down brightness
😂😂😂😂😂
It’s cold everywhere else 😤
Sorry? 🤷🏻♀️
Karl reads Fortean Times - it’s where he gets a lot of his weird stories.
😅😅
Lmao Daniel! GLad you are enjoying the snow and my reactions! And SUPER CHUFFED you noticed my tan!! 😅😅🤗
Mandy is absolutely gorgeous… I mean literally out of this world 😍😍
Lol, thank you Carl 🤪🙈
18:20 I think it just depends on accent, I'm from North East, not far from Manchester where Karl's from, we say Sloth, I've heard people from Yorkshire and like Barnsley and what have you saying it like 'Slothe' before it's weird. But people say stuff different allover, like I imagine somebody from Texas or like Wyoming or somewhere would probably pronounce it similarly to Karl
I think you underestimate how intelligent Ricky gervais is
It's weird I'm from the UK but never heard sloth pronounced "slow-th" except David Attenborough but apparently its common haha, I've always pronounced it how it's spelled
I think it is a regional thing 😅🤷🏻♀️
@@MandyCaneLane i think u must be right haha
@@chi6801 yeah, that happens about once a year. And usually with knowledge on the most useless stuff 😅😂
@@MandyCaneLane I think it's more of an age thing. No one even used to use the American pronunciation but now everyone is becoming Americanised.
Sloth 🦥 to rhyme with cloth.
Sloth 🦥 to rhyme with loaf.
It's regional, I believe .
Or class based. 🤔🤷♀️
I think it is more regional from what I am gathering in the comments 😅
You look good Mandy. Hope you're feeling better

When he goes to Peru? 🧐
Gratz on the tan! Thought it was Snoop Dogg for a second there.
LMAO! THANK YOUUUUU 🤗
LMAOO 😂😂😂😂
Discos aren’t the same as proms, but they’re like a mini party for kids lol. Sorta party where they play that stupid song that goes “aga do do do…” is anyone knows what song I’m referring to let me know lol
Black Lace - Agadoo 😂 😂 😂
Lol, never been to a prom. Luckily! 🙌🏻
Agree I wouldn’t recognize myself as a kid too.
I say sloth. Some people say sloth. But I say sloth. 🤣
I have no idea which one you say 😂😅
@@MandyCaneLane The one that sounds like Sloth 😂
Lmao to all of this! So it was all to sell more flowers? 😅🤣
I know right? Ricky was mortified.
As a 3rd child I totally understand. My mum and dad don't even know what my 1st word was.
Lmao. Old news to them!! 😅😅

I've always pronounced sloth the same way as you, so it also sounded weird to me too.
Hopefully, one day after you catch up with your 3 year's worth of reactions to get through, you do sick of it, staring the Round headed buffoon, lol.
You seem to have your mojo back, too. Xx
Haha, except for the cough I am feeling great! And good to know the sloth thing wasn't just weird to me 😅🤪
Mandy competed in the tanning Olympics and she got bronze! 😂
I absolutely love the Karl stories. A writer could take 3 or 4 of his thoughts and come up with a great science fiction novel.
Lmao! 100%! And bronze is a fine color to have 🤪
Really enjoyed this, you're a delight.
I say sloth the same way you do (I'm American).
Well thank you! 🤗
Sloths are called sloths because they are slow.
See: grow -> growth
That's why we say 'slowth'
Karl does talk about population control a strange amount for a simple man 😂
😂😂😂
Lmao! The 'behind the door' was too good!! 😂😂😂
One of Karl's greatest lessons for humanity is that truth is stranger than fiction, after all. Thanks for a great reaction! :)
Lmao! Just like Bob Mortimer!! 🤗🤗
@@MandyCaneLane I don't know much about him.. :(
I am from the South East of England and I would pronounce, sloth the way you pronounced it.
Cool. Thank you! 🤗🤗
Lol. My favourite way of describing Karl is : *unique* 🙌🏻
Thank you Achilles!! And I don't mind that kind of humour. People nowadays take the word 'discrimination' waay too far!
@@MandyCaneLane
Yeah i know all the snowflakes and their cancel culture we have now dictating what we can and can't watch, really sick of those people!
I have no idea who that is but it seems to be one of those words where it depends on where you grew up 🤷🏻♀️
@@MandyCaneLane David Attenborough is an incredibly popular TV zoologist in the UK: he’s 96 years old and still making nature documentaries, as he has been for 66 years now. He was knighted by the Queen more than 30 years ago, and has been honoured by just about every British institution out there (his full name if you used all his appellations would be Sir David Attenborough OM GCMG CH CVO CBE FRS FSA FRSA FLS FZS FRSGS FRSB; he’s been given 32 honorary degrees from universities around the world in addition to his own from Cambridge, and has had 20 animal species named after him). His name will come up in a near episode of An Idiot Abroad, so now you’ll know!
Thank you for one more funny Karl reaction. I would like to suggest you a funny WILTY compilation with the title: Miles Smiles and Guffaws - Miles Jupp on Would I Lie to You?

As a kid, what were your favourite shows/films?
Ohh! Well I loved The Little Mermaid and The Nightmare Before Christmas... and as far as show go, my older brothers were always in charge of the remote so I grew up on The Simpsons and Futurama! How about you?
@@MandyCaneLane Doctor Who (I prefer the oldies to the new ones, but the new ones are still good) Back To The Future, and The Jungle Book. I don’t like musicals however now, so the latter is unimportant
I bet you’d recognise yourself, the human brain is ridiculously heavily programmed to recognise faces, it’s why you sometimes might see faces if you look at like say the paint on a wall up really close or in random patterns n stuff. Surprises me sometimes when I recognise someone who’s aged like 20 years since I saw them last n look completely different. There’s just something about faces where your brains super good with them
Now I want to test it! Somebody get 5 year old me a time machine!
Just catching up but you look cool Mandy
